Lot 476. Instructions from 3 Spalding Books, Mickey Cochrane on How to Play Baseball. Published in the 1930s, these three paperbacks are part of Spalding’s “Red Cover” Series of athletic handbooks. Two are attributed to John B. Foster, “How to Bat,” No 80R in the “Red Cover” Series, and “How to Catch and How to Run Bases,” No. 496. The first is vg-ex (cover crease) and the second is ex. Both were copyrighted in 1935. The third volume, “How to Pitch,” is unattributed. Copyrighted in 1934, it is No. 479. All three are illustrated with pictures of future Hall of Fame players. Vg-ex. Mickey Cochrane’s instructions appear in his 1939 book, “Baseball: The Fan’s Game,” 1939 stated first edition hardback, no dj, vg book with owner’s name inside. Accompanying this collection is “A Thinking Man’s Guide to Baseball” by Leonard Koppett, 1967, ex dj, nm book. The Spalding books are in short supply.
