19th Century   36 Lots       »

Lot 31.  Circa 1888-89 Goodwin Cabinet Photo of Joe Gunson, Padded Catcher’s Mitt User. In the 1880s, either Gunson or Harry Decker first use the padded catcher’s mitt. Legend has it that Gunson, who played for the Kansas City Cowboys in 1889, came up with the idea for the padded mitt. He was too busy catching in Al Spalding’s world baseball tour, however, to apply for a patent or to commercialize the idea. In 1889, Decker filed for a patent. In this Goodwin cabinet photo, Gunson wears a Kansas City uniform. Wearing a padded mitt on his left hand, he is posed to throw a baseball. The pose is different from the known pose of his N173 Old Judge cabinet card. The photo is on a 4 ½” x 6 ½” mount from the Heyn Photo Studio of Omaha, Neb. Decorative ad back. There are six tack holes, only one of which affects Gunson’s image, his shoe. The photo exhibits some foxing and shows strong contrast. Possibly one of a kind.
Minimum Bid $400.

Lot 32.  Scarce N48 Black Stockings Girl Baseball Player Card. This card showing the pitcher carries the Virginia Brights Cigarettes advertising in a box. The card is especially unusual and desirable because it has Allen & Ginter advertising on the back. Blank backs appear to be far more common on cards with Virginia Brights advertising. The ad backs usually are found in conjunction with Dixie advertising. The card is somewhat irregular, apparently as manufactured. It is 2 5/8” tall x 1 ¼” wide at the top and 1 11/32” at the bottom. Vg with light creases on the front and no sign of creasing on the back.
Winning Bid $134.

Lot 33.  1887-90 Old Judge Henry Boyle Graded Ex 60 by SGC. Photo shows Boyle pitching, and card has the number .0332.
Winning Bid $222.

Lot 34.  1887-90 Old Judge Thomas Brown Graded Vg-Ex 50 by SGC. Strong photo with #0248 in the upper right corner. Brown is shown with Pittsburg.
Winning Bid $248.

Lot 35.  Scarce 1887-90 Old Judge Portrait of Honest John Morrill SGC-Graded Fair 20. Given that the card has an appearance that is at least good, the grade assigned is not generous. The photo is sharply focused with excellent contrast. It is neither too dark nor too light.
Winning Bid $222.

Lot 36.  1887-90 Old Judge Billy Nash Graded Vg-Ex 50 by SGC.
Winning Bid $248.

Lot 37.  1887-90 Old Judge John Roach Graded Vg 40 by SGC. Roach is posed ready to throw a baseball.
Winning Bid $163.

Lot 38.  1887-90 Old Judge Bill Krieg with Washington. This card is 1 5/16” x 2 ½”, smaller than the average Old Judge. Nevetheless, it has a border all the way around, and we see no evidence of trimming. The picture area of the card simply is small. The other Old Judges offered here have a vertical picture area of about 2 3/8” to 2 5/8”. The picture area of this card is only 2 1/8” tall. The picture area is not as wide either. As sized, the card is ex with a strong photo.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 39.  1887-90 Old Judge Card of Sam Barkley with Pittsburgh. On the negative side of the ledger, this card has a stain on the back, a pin hole and a small area of paper loss that has been filled in. On the positive side, the corners would support an ex card, and the photo is strong with great clarity and contrast. Very collectible.
Winning Bid $113.

This 6” x 7 7/8” blank-backed album page features the fronts of five cardsthat wereissued in the N162 Goodwin card set. The football player is Harry Beecher, whose regular card graded vg-ex books for $900. The other athletes are Captain Bogardus, marksman; W. Byrd Page, high jumper; Duncan Cross, broad swordsman, and Myers, runner. The page is scuffed along the left edge where the album was taken apart; card images are unaffected; otherwise, g-vg with a light to moderate vertical crease. There is a light scratch, visible on close examination, on the Beecher card, and a scratch on the Bogardus card. Excellent for display.
Winning Bid $198.

Lot 44.  1886 International Association Scorecared with Kimball’s, Moxie Soda Adverising. Titled “Good Form,” this scorecard for a game between theUtica Pentups vs. Rochester Maroons has a vintage, realistic batter on the front surrounded by advertising. An ad on the cover promotes Moxie, which was introduced in 1884. This is one of the first ads linking the soda to sports. Insideis a small ad for the Wm. S. Kimball & Co. “Kimball Straight Cut Cigarettes.” Of course, Kimball was headquartered in Rochester, and the company issued sports and non-sport cards in the 1880s. The roster portion of the two-panel scorecard, which opens to 6 3/4” x 8 1/4”, is neatly scored in pencil. Light stains; free of significant creases.
Winning Bid $182.

Lot 45.  1882 Hand-Colored Leslie’s with Cap Anson and “The Chicago Baseball Team - Winners of the National League Championship.” The team picture, with Anson and King Kelly, fills the top half of a page from the Oct. 14 issue. The woodcut is technically vg-ex and looks better. The picture below shows New York City’s “Shantytown.”
Winning Bid $125.
