Lot 455. 3 Classic Putnam Baseball Series Histories – One Signed by the Author. Written by leading sportswriters of the 1940s-50s, these hardcover books from G. P. Putnam’s Sons cover the Indians, Orioles and Tigers. Providing informative and entertaining accounts of the formation and development of these teams, they are part of a series of eight books covering the American League. Frederick G. Lieb wrote “The Baltimore Orioles” and “The Detroit Tigers.” A contributor to “The Sporting News” and the “Saturday Evening Post,” Lieb was the first sportswriter inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His book on the Orioles is subtitled “The History of a Colorful Team in Baltimore and St. Louis.” It may be the most difficult to find among the Putnam team series. The 1955 book has a name and address stamped on both end pages, and these pages and the paper inside the covers show some stains. Vg-ex 246-page book in a g+ to vg dust jacket. Lieb’s 1946 book on the Tigers has 276 pages and is g+ to vg. The dust jacket is vg with each inside corner slightly clipped. Franklin Lewis, the author of “The Cleveland Indians,” AUTOGRAPHED THE FLYLEAF. His signature is nm-m 8 to mint 9. Known as “Whitey,” Lewis was an editor and columnist for “The Cleveland Press.” He died in 1958. His 1949 book, like the two others offered here, has a name and address stamped on the flyleaf and stains on the inside of the covers and on both end pages. Both the 276-page book and the dust cover are g+ to vg. These books are apparent first editions.
