Lot 290.  Scarce Program for the 1959 Baseball All-Star Game 1 at Forbes Field. Major League Baseball initiated its experiment with two All-Star games in Pittsburgh. The N.L. won the first game, 5-4, as Willie Mays drove in the tying and winning runs with a triple in the eighth inning against Whitey Ford. Don Drysdale pitched three perfect innings. The scorecard at the center of the 136-page program is loose and scored in pencil. The back cover has a 1.5” tear that is reinforced with tape, and there is damage ranging from approximately 1/8” to 1.5” at the top of the last 12 pages. Otherwise, the program is vg+ to ex. It contains photos of Aaron, Mays, Banks, Musial, Mantle, Williams and many other stars. Very collectable example of a comparatively difficult program.

Lot 291.  Program for Baseball’s 1959 All-Star Game 2 at the LA Memorial Coliseum Aug. 3. Major League Baseball added a second All-Star Game in 1959. The American League earned a split in the two-game series with a 5-3 triumph. Nellie Fox drove Tony Kubek home with the winning run. The 32-page program pictures the All-Stars for each team and presents the box score for each previous game. Vg+ to ex.

Lot 292.  1940 and 1942 Senators Official for Yankees, Athletics Games, Gomez Autograph. The 1940 scorecard, for a game against New York, has a pencil autograph inside of Lefty Gomez. It displays as ex-m 6. The 1942 scorecard is for a Philadelphia game. Each four-page publication is ex; some names have been added in pencil to the printed lineups, which include Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Cecil Travis and Mickey Vernon. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph.

Lot 293.  1942 Baltimore-Newark Scorecard Signed by HoFer Bob Lemon (at Third Base), 27 Others. This four-panel, eight-page International League scorecard, approximately 10” x 28” when fully opened, presents 35 autographs by 28 different players, including Bob Lemon, the future Hall of Fame pitcher who played third base in 1942 for the Orioles. All of the signatures, authenticated by Kevin Keating, are in pencil. Generally, they display as nm 7. The Lemon autograph is one of few that could be displayed individually. Lemon hit 21 home runs and batted .268 as his team’s regular third baseman. Besides Lemon, the program is signed by 17 Orioles and 10 Newark Bears: Joe Becker, Peter Center, Hank Edwards, Ray Flanigan, Del Jones, Charles Langgood, Leslie McGarity, Russ Niller, Bill Rabe, Bob Repass, Sherry Robertson, Eddie Robinson, Ted Sepkowski, Harold Sieling, George Staller, Ken Trinkle and Dick Waldt for Baltimore and Joe Abreu, Johnny Babich, Tommy Byrne, Milo Candini, Lloyd Christopher, Gene Corbett, Al Gerheauser, Randy Gumpert, Bud Metheny and Steve Roser for Newark. Twenty-one of these signers played in the majors. The panels of the scorecard are largely separated, but still holding together. The scorecard front has a vg appearance.

Lot 294.  Baltimore Orioles 1944 IL Championship Season Program, 2 Others and 7 Ticket Stubs. The 1944 Orioles were awarded the Governor’s Trophy as champions of the International League. It was their eighth league championship and first Governor’s Cup. The cover of the 1944 program features a color, wartime image of Uncle Sam as a baseball player. The eight-page program is scored for a game with the Jersey City Giants; vg+ to ex. Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett, the Giants’ manger, is in the printed lineup as one of the team’s catchers. A 72-page Syracuse at Baltimore 1946 program is scored and has the date and outcome in pencil on the cover; vg+. Familiar names in the printed lineups include Sam Mele, Hank Sauer and Sherm Lollar. Eddie Robinson is among the Orioles pictured. A 72-page 1947 program is scored for a game with the Newark Bears. Gene Woodling and Lollar are in the lineup for Newark. Although undated, the ticket stubs are believed to be from the 1940s. Almost all show a small tape stain or piece of tape. Five stubs were neatly separated from the rest of the ticket and two, less so.

Lot 295.  4 1950s Baltimore Orioles IL Programs, a Benefit Game Brochure and a 45 RPM Record. In 1950, the Orioles earned their second Governor’s Cup by finishing the season as International League champions. From 1919-50, they were the league’s best nine times. Two programs commemorate the 1950 season. A 16-page program is for a game with Springfield; vg with names added to the printed lineups. Smoky Burgess is listed as the Cubs’ catcher. A second program is for a charity game with Montreal. Consisting of 18 pages, it is scored and ex. The other programs are from 1952 vs. Toronto, g-vg, and 1953 vs. Buffalo, partially scored, vg+. The 1952 program has a tribute, including a photo, to Babe Ruth. A four-page 1953 brochure provides information on a benefit game between the Orioles and Syracuse; it does not contain a scorecard. Vg+ to ex. The 45 rpm record marks the Orioles’ 1966 and first American League and MLB championship. Titled “Baltimore Orioles Champs All the Way,” it is ex-m and on the Newheart label. The Pennant version is on one side, and the World Series version on the other. Steve Martin is listed as the writer. Six collectibles.

Lot 296.  2 1953 New York Giants Programs – vs. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Each 24-page program is neatly scored and has the date lightly written in pencil on the cover. The Giants defeated the Phils, 8-1, in the first game of an Aug. 16 doubleheader. They lost to the Pirates, 7-4, in the opener of a Sept. 19 two-game set. Both programs are ex with some discoloration on the scorecard pages resulting from news clippings, which are included.

Lot 297.  2 1955 and 1 1956 New York Giants Programs. The 1955 programs are for July 17 and Aug. 27 games vs. Milwaukee, and the 1956 program, a Sept. 12 game vs. Cincinnati. The Aug. 27 and Sept. 12 programs are neatly scored in pencil. The 1955 programs have the date in pen on the cover, and the 1956 program, in pencil. In the July 17 program, the scorecard is loose and has a notation in ink concerning the game. Except as noted, the 1955 programs are ex to ex-m, and the 1956 program, vg+. Leo Durocher is the subject of a full-page photo in the 1955 programs. Johnny Antonelli also is pictured. Willie Mays promotes Tip-Top bread in the 1956 program. He is among the players in the printed lineups, as well as Red Schoendienst, Frank Robinson, Ted Kluszewski, Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron.

Lot 298.  1956 Los Angeles Angels Yearbook. Led by manger Bob Scheffing and first baseman Steve Bilko, these Angels were the champions of the Pacific Coast League. Bilko batted .360, slugged 55 home runs and drove in 164 runs. For the second straight season, he was the league’s MVP. The 40-page yearbook pictures other once or future major leaguers – Jim Bolger, Gene Mauch, George Freese, John Goryl and Harry Perkowski. Vg+, 1” spine splits at the top and bottom.

Lot 299.  1958 Baseball All-Star Game Program. Major League Baseball celebrated the 25th anniversary of the All-Star Game at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium on July 8. The American League won, 4-3, as Gil McDougald singled home the winning run in the sixth inning. All 13 hits in the game were singles. The 36-page program contains the line score for each previous All-Star Game, as well as the play-by-play for the inaugural game in 1933. An article describes the Babe Ruth home run that won the game. Each participant in the 1958 game is pictured. Ex copy.
