Lot 261. 5 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates Wire or Newspaper Morgue Photos – Patek, Hebner, Belinsky. Three photos from the files of the Pittsburgh “Post-Gazette,” each 7” x 10” or 8” x 10”, have individual images of Fred Patek, Richie Hebner or Bo Belinsky. Each photo exhibits tape stains around the edges, surface wrinkles or cracks (Patek photo), sharp focus and strong contrast. The Patek photo has a chip along the right edge, and the Belinsky photo has light stains throughout. These are glossy photos, each with the player’s name written on the front. Two additional 8 x 10s are 1969 AP wire photos that were transmitted electronically. They are printed on regular photo stock and include the caption. One photo shows Orlando Cepeda sliding safely ahead of the tag by the Pirates’ Jose Martinez. Patek is in the photo. Vg. The other has Patek putting on a new shoe after he damaged his on a play; the Pirates’ bat boy looks on. F. Both photos have tape stains around the edges. Seven off-condition early Pirates team photos taken from a magazine, a photo of Bill Robinson and a 1985 Topps card of Vernon and Vance Law accompany the wire and newspaper photos. Teams from 1906, 1927, 1954 and 1964 are included in the 4” x 8” magazine photos.

Lot 306. 1935 “Illustrated Current News” Poster with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe Cronin. The 12.25” x 19” poster shows Ruth at bat for his first time with Boston Braves; Gehrig as baseball’s highest-paid player ($30,000) and Cronin as leader of an All-Star team that won an exhibition game in San Francisco. Except for two folds made to mail the poster, it in nm-m.

Lot 307. Original 1937 Sepia Acme Newspictures Wire Photo of Bill Terry and Travis Jackson. In the 7” x 9” photo, Terry, the New York Giants’ manager, congratulates Jackson for being appointed manager of the Jersey City Giants. Terry and Jackson are both in the Hall of Fame as players. Terry was inducted in 1954, and Jackson, in 1982. The photo has creases in each corner. Vg to vg-ex with a clean central image area.

Lot 308. 4 Wire Photos – Ty Cobb and World Series Action from 1942 and 1947. All show players sliding into bases, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Ty Cobb is the subject of what appears to be an Associated Press wire photo trimmed to 4.75” x 5.75”. The photo appeared in an unidentified newspaper on July 19, 1961, two days after the Hall of Fame outfielders’ passing. Vg-ex with cropping and edit marks. In an Oct. 1, 1942 Acme Telephoto that measures 7” x 9”, the Cardinals’ Whitey Kurowski tags the Yankees’ Tuck Stainback for an out in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the World Series. The throw to Kurowski came from Enos Slaughter. Pitcher Johnny Beazley is in the photo, and so is umpire George Magerkurth. The Cardinals won, 4-3. Vg-ex sepia photo, caption attached. An original International News photo shows Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees tagging pinch hitter Pete Reiser of the Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1947 World Series on Oct. 4. Vg+ 6” x 6.5” photo with a caption from a Spanish-language newspaper on the back. The fourth photo captures the Yankees’ Gerry Coleman attempting to turn a double play as Phil Masi of the White Sox slides below him. The 7” x 7.25” photo is dated June 17, 1950, and is from the “Cleveland Press.” The Yankees won the game at Yankee Stadium, 4-3. Vg.

Lot 309. 1947 Original Wire Photo of St. Louis Browns Hopeful Jerome Witte. Dated Feb. 25, 1947, the 6” x 8” ex-m Acme photo shows Witte in spring training with the Browns in Miami. The attached caption notes that the first baseman hit 46 home runs with the minor league Toledo team the previous season. Witte made the team but failed to hit above .200 as a part-time player in two seasons. Witte played 16 seasons, until 1952, in the minors. He was the American Association MVP in 1946.

Lot 310. 1969 AP Wire Photos of Orioles or Twins Celebrating American League Championships. The 1969 season marked the beginning of division competition in the majors. One photo shows Baltimore manager Earl Weaver enjoying some champagne after the Orioles captured the A.L. Eastern Division title. Another shows a celebration in the Minnesota Twins’ locker room after they won the Western Division. Frank Quilici and coach Vern Morgan are among the Twins pictured. In the third photo, the Orioles’ Mark Belanger, Elrod Hendricks and Pete Richert joke and enjoy champagne after their team swept the Twins in the first American League Championship playoff. Each about 7” x 8”, the photos were transmitted electronically to a newspaper, where they were printed on photographic paper. They average vg with decent contrast and tape stains around the edges, primarily in the borders or on the captions. One photo has surgical tape along the left and right edge, and the caption is missing. These three photos are historically interesting because of the first ALCS. In addition, in his first season as Baltimore’s manager, Weaver won the first of four A.L. pennants.

Lot 311. 9 AP 1969 Wire Photos Picturing Mays, Dodgers, Astros, Red Sox, Etc. AP transmitted these photos electronically to newspapers, where they were captured on photographic paper. Each is about 7” x 8.5” plus the caption, which is part of the photo. Each has tape stains around the edges, almost totally in the border or on part of the caption. Several are glued to scrapbook paper. Vg overall, with decent contrast, generally moderate to strong. In a photo taken in San Diego, Willie Mays gives the slide sign to teammate Tito Fuentes. Subjects of three photos taken in Boston are future Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams, Mike Andrews (with Yankees pitcher Mel Stottlemyre), and rookie Billy Conigliaro (sliding into third base). Detroit hurler Mike Kilkenny is shown delivering a pitch. In two photos from Houston, the Astros John Edwards tags out the Dodgers’ Willie Crawford, and Doug Rader tags the Reds’ Lee May. The two remaining photos show Atlanta’s Sonny Jackson and LA’s Jim Lefebvre, and Lefebvre and the Braves’ Bob Didier.

Lot 312. 3 Chicago Cubs 1969 AP Wire Photos, One Picturing HoF Manager Leo Durocher. A Sept. 24 photo shows Durocher wiping his face with a handkerchief and comes with the caption “The Time for Tears Approaches.” The caption goes on to point out that one more victory would give the New York Mets the N.L. Eastern Division title over the Cubs. The other photos are of Cincinnati’s Woody Woodward tagging out Don Kessinger and Chicago’s Paul Popovich receiving the ball too late to tag the Phillies’ Deron Johnson. These 7” x 8” or slightly larger photos were transmitted electronically by AP. Printed on photo paper, they each have a caption and tape stains around the edges, either in the border or on part of the caption. Otherwise, they show decent contrast and are vg.

Lot 313. 6 Phillies Oversized Color Team Photos – Supplements to the “Sunday Bulletin” – 1974-79. One lithographed photo for each season, each picturing Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and their teammates. Players and other individuals in the photos are identified. The 1974 photo is 11” x 14”; the others are approximately 10.25” x 13.25”. These photos are generally ex with light corner creases and occasional foxing along some edges.
