Lot 4. Chicago Cubs Original 1907 “Pennant Winners” Postcard from V. O. Hammon. With future Hall of Famers Mordecai Brown, Frank Chance, Johnny Evers and Joe Tinker, the 1906 Cubs won the National League pennant by 20 games. In the World Series, they fell to the “hitless wonders,” the Chicago White Sox, in six games. In 1907, they outdistanced their nearest competitors by 17 games and then defeated Detroit for their first world championship. The postcard is unused and free of creases except for couple of small ones in the corners. Nice vg-ex.

Lot 255. Pittsburgh Pirates Collection of 9 Pins from the Early 1900s-2000. The earliest pin is from the mid-1920s, a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Benchwarmer Club pin. The paper insert is still in place in this ex-m 1.25 pin. Pittsburgh baseball in the 1930s was the inspiration for a 1.25” black and gold pin that simply says “Pirates.” Nm. The collection includes a 1.25” crossed-bats pin that has red bats and stitches; “Pittsburgh Pirates” is in blue. The other pins are: A 1950s 0.75” red and blue on white pin with the Pirates mascot, nm-m. A 1.75” red, blue and white pin from Gustine’s Restaurant; Gustine played for the Pirates, and his restaurant was near Forbes Field. Nm-m. And a set of four commemorative pins in their original case representing the Pirates of 1970-2000. Mint, and sponsored by Giant Eagle and Coca-Cola.

Lot 258. 12 Periodicals Including “Baseball” and “SI” with Pirates Covers and a Clemente Book. The earliest offering is the Nov. 1947 issue of “Baseball Magazine” with Ralph Kiner and Johnny Mize on the cover; both are shown inside in an article titled “The Home Run.” Vg copy with extensive spine splits; the covers remain attached. “Sports Illustrated” is the source of three covers: Sept. 28, 1970, Danny Murtaugh on a fold-out cover with Leo Durocher and Gil Hodges, vg-ex; Aug. 2, 1972, Willie Stargell, vg-ex, and May 30, 1977, Dave Parker, ex. All three issues have labels. Two issues of “Sport” are without labels: June 1979, Dave Parker, faded cover, and April 1980, Willie Stargell, ex-m. Roberto Clemente is on the cover of “Pittsburgh Baseball and Me,” which commemorates his 3,000th hit in 1972, ex. Clemente is featured also on the covers of the 1973 paperback book “Roberto Clemente” from United Press International, ex-m, and the May 1989 issue of “Beckett Baseball Card Monthly,” ex. This collection also has four copies of the program for the 2001 Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, one vg-ex and three nm. Bill Mazeroski is pictured with Hilton Smith, Kirby Puckett and Dave Winfield.

Lot 260. Ticket Stub for the Opening Home Game of the Pittsburgh Pirates 1959 Season. On the way to their second winning season of the 1950s, the Pirates got off to an inauspicious start, losing to Milwaukee, 8-0. Warren Spahn gave up seven hits and pitched a complete game. The Bucs finished the season in fourth place, with a 78-76 record. The stub, including the rain check and part of the next section, is vg+ to ex, without stains or paper loss.

Lot 262. Set of 4 Phantom Pittsburgh Pirates Tickets for the 1970 World Series. In their inaugural season in Three Rivers Stadium, the Pirates won the N.L. Eastern Division title. The Cincinnati Reds ended their hope for a world championship by sweeping them in the N.L. Championship Series. The phantom tickets, printed without seat numbers, are nm-m.

Lot 264. Willie Stargell 1973-75 Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger WS2 32” Bat. Unusual store model with a flared knob. “WS2” is inscribed on the knob, and an “8” has been added in marker. The bat appears to replicate the S2 34-36” model that Stargell used professionally. Excellent bat that shows light use and is free of dead wood or other problems.

Lot 265. 2 Different Willie Stargell Bobbing Heads. Both were Pittsburgh Pirates promotions, one from 2002 and the other, from 2008. Global Sourcing International produced the 2008 bobble as part of series celebrating the “Lumber Co.,” members of the 1970s teams. BD&A manufactured the second bobbing head. Each is about 8” tall and mint in the original box.

Lot 266. Pittsburgh Pirates 1979 Championship Season First Day Covers and Programs. Among the programs is one for the World Series, in which Pittsburgh triumphed in seven games. The scorecards are scored for the sixth game, which Pittsburgh won. The folio with the Pirates’ scorecard is loose. Vg-ex program. Another program, with Chuck Tanner on the cover, is for the N.L. Championship Series with Cincinnati. Nm. And an nm-m regular-season program for a game with Atlanta has the Pirates team photo on the cover. A set of eight first day covers commemorates the series. No. 10 envelopes have a Memorial Stadium postmark for Oct. 9 and 17. The first game of the series was supposed to be played Oct. 9, but was rained out. Game 7 was played Oct. 18. Both envelopes show the Pirates’ mascot. A mascot sticker appears to have been added to the first, and a “Pittsburgh Pirates 1979 World Series” sticker to the second. Nm-m. No. 6 envelopes are used for the other FDCs. Each has a postmark from the ball park where the game was played. All show some soiling at the top and otherwise are ex-m. Also included is an 8.5” x 11” offset press photo of the 1960 Pirates as “National League Champions,” vg+ to ex.

Lot 267. Pittsburgh Pirates Mascot Pins, Patches, a Matchbox Car and Other Memorabilia. Four pins are each 7/8” in diameter. One is a 1960s issue from Guy’s Potato Chips, ex. Two with crossed bats feature the Pirates’ 1950s mascot. One says “Pittsburgh Pirates” in red, nm, and the other simply says “Pirates” in yellow, vg-ex. The fourth has Pittsburgh’s mid-1960s-80s mascot, vg+. This mascot is also on a 7.75” x 11.5” cardboard sign, nm, and on two 2.5” x 3” patches. Also included are a 1993 Pirates’ logo Matchbox car, mint in the original box; a 1.75” logo patch, ex-m; a 3” x 4.5” transfer with an uncommon mascot, vg; and a Fleer cloth sticker, ex. Eleven items.

Lot 272. Joe DiMaggio Late 1940s Iron-On. Any resemblance of the artwork to the Yankees’ Hall of Fame outfielder is purely coincidental. Nevertheless it is unusual, and a “must” for a comprehensive DiMaggio collection. It measures about 3” x 7” and has an ex appearance.

Lot 273. 1950 Menu and Napkin from Joe DiMaggio’s Restaurant in San Francisco. The oversized menu (10” x 12.5”) from DiMaggio’s Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant has his facsimile autograph on the front. Artwork on the cover shows the “view from our dining room.” The menu was mailed in 1950. It has two folds and edge tears on both the front and back page. The napkin is 4.5” x 4.75” and was folded in half.

Lot 274. 2 1955 New Haven Railroad Broadsides for Weekend Excursions to NY Yankees’ Games. Each broadside is approximately 6” x 10” and folded horizontally. An orange, off-white and black example promotes a June 24 game with the Cleveland Indians. Ex. A red, white and blue broadside lists Yankees weekend games and offers a package that includes two nights at the Hotel Concourse Plaza. Both Yankee Stadium and the hotel are pictured. The broadside is ex with a small edge chip and edge tear. These broadsides will display nicely in a railroad or baseball memorabilia collection.

Lot 275. 6 Yankees Figures and a Plate – Ruth, Mantle, Berra, Ford, Mattingly and Jeter. Ruth is the subject of a two-dimensional paper-on-plastic die-cut from Fun Shots. It is 8” wide, 11.5” tall. A 1979 doll 7” tall from Hallmark also depicts Ruth. Images of Mantle and Jeter are captured in bobbing heads. The 8.5” tall Mantle nodder is by S.A.M. from the Cooperstown Collection. Alexander Global produced the 7.5” Jeter figure as a giveaway for a 2002 spring training game at Legends Field in Tampa. A ticket for the game and a schedule that lists game incentives is included. Whitey Ford is represented by a 1990 Hartland statue, which is in the original box. Three images of Yogi Berra are on an 8.5” Gartlan plate, titled “It Ain’t Over” and issued in 1990; it is in the original box. Finally, in 1987, Sports Impressions offered collectors a 7” figurine of Don Mattingly. Seven collectibles, nm or better.
