Lot 279.  1996 Legislative Resolution for the “Shoeless Joe Jackson Memorial Parkway.” In 1996, the South Carolina House of Representative passed a resolution concurrent with the state senate requesting “that the Department of Transportation designate and name a portion of United Sates Highway 123 in Greenville County … as the ‘Shoeless Joe Jackson Memorial Parkway’ and to install appropriate markers or signs….” The three-page resolution contains information on Jackson’s life and career. It has an autopen signature of David H. Wilkins, Speaker of the South Carolina House, and an actual signature of Sandra K. McKinney, Clerk of the House. A portion of the US 123 was so designated in 1996. The resolution has a few chips along the left edge and otherwise is ex.

Lot 280.  1911 “Home Run Bill” Baseball Sheet Music. Jerome Shay wrote the music and Alfred Bryan, the lyrics, to this humorous and entertaining celebration of the National Game. The subject of the music is “Bill Johnson” who was “a swatter on a Bush League nine, Way down South in Caroline.” The cover artwork is by one of Starmer brothers, William or Frederick, who are widely recognized among sheet music collectors. The six pages of sheet music have been taped along the spine on the inside. The front cover displays a music store stamp, a few small edge tears and two places where pencil writing has been erased. Vg-ex.

Lot 281.  Rare Circa 1930s Mickey Mouse Celluloid Figure with a Baseball Bat. This seldom-encountered 2 7/8” figure has “Japan” impressed on the back. It appears to be hand-painted, and some of the red paint from Mickey’s bat is also on the right side of his face. There is a slight indentation on Mickey’s nose and a deeper indentation on the back of his right shoe.

Lot 282.  “Sporting News’ Record Book for 1934” with Carl Hubbell on the Cover. Clean ex copy of the 100-page publication (including covers) that has a photo of Jimmie Foxx on the back cover. It contains an article on the inaugural All-Star Game titled “Game of the Century,” a summary of the 1933 World Series, trivia (Foxx hit a home run in every ballpark he played in during 1933) and an abundance of statistics.

Lot 283.  8 Issues of “Time” Magazine and 1 of “Newsweek,” 1938-89, with Baseball Covers. Actually, future Hall of Fame Baseball Commissioner (1945-51) Happy Chandler is pictured as the Governor of Kentucky on the cover of the Aug. 1, 1938 issue of “Time.” The front cover has a small scuff, and there is a checkmark in pen inside; otherwise, ex. Comedian Bert Lahr wears a New York Giants uniform on the Oct. 1, 1951 “Time” cover; ex issue. Players on “Time” covers (full issues) are Johnny Bench, July 10, 1972, vg-ex; Reggie Jackson, June 3, 1974, ex; Babe Ruth, April 26, 1976, ex+; Billy Martin, May 11, 1981, ex; and Pete Rose, Aug. 19, 1985, ex-m, and July 10, 1989, ex-m. Vida Blue is the subject of the June 28, 1976 issue of “Newsweek”; vg+.

Lot 284.  Attractive F J Raff 1948 “Autograph Baseball Game” Board. This 22.5” x 22.5” masonite board has 36 facsimile autographs representing each of the major league teams. Among the names are Eddie Waitkus, Mickey Vernon, Ferris Fain, Enos Slaughter, Pee Wee Reese, Harry Brecheen, Early Wynn, Al (Red) Schoendienst, Johnny Pesky and Frank Gustine. Ex to ex-m.

Lot 285.  1969 Jim Beam Decanter Commemorating “Professional Baseball’s First 100 Years.” Amazingly enough, baseball’s 150th anniversary is only five years away. The decanter, without the cork on top, is 10” tall, 7.5” at its widest point and about 2.5” deep. Lettering on the bottom says the decanter is “Genuine Regal China.” Nm-m.

Lot 286.  1987 Minnesota Twins “Championship Drive” Hanky and 3 Full-Sized Baseball Pennants. The “Homer Hanky,” approximately 14” x 14”, was distributed by the “Star Tribune” of Minneapolis. The Twins won the A.L. pennant and the World Series. Ex+. The pennants mark the 100th anniversary of the St. Louis Cardinals; the final homestand of the Cleveland Indians at Municipal Stadium, Oct. 1-3, 1993; and the opening day of Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians, on July 11, 1996. These pennants are nm+ to mint. The Cleveland pennant has Chief Wahoo over Municipal Stadium. The names of the players and coaching staff are presented. The Indianapolis team is the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Lot 287.  Huge Banner from the 1988 Baseball All-Star Game in Cincinnati. The American League won this game at Riverfront Stadium, 2-1. The canvas banner hung either in the stadium or in the city. It measures 30” x 95”, plus 18” streamers on one side. On a red background, large white letters, accompanied by blue and white stars, simply say “All-Star Game 1988.” Ex-m.

Lot 288.  Original Pen & Ink Drawing of Jim Palmer Signed by the Artist. This colorful artwork, 15 ½” x 17”, features a portrait and action image of the Hall of Fame Baltimore Orioles pitcher. It is signed “Schull ’79.” There are a couple of light stains just outside the image area that could be matted out. Apparently one-of-a-kind, it’s a unique display item to have Palmer sign.

Lot 289.  Baseball Grab Bag – Bobble Heads, Publications, All-Star Ballots, Jerseys, Etc. This collection includes an almost-complete run of fan All-Star ballots from 1973-2010; missing 1983, 1984, 1986, 1998, 1999 and 2006-09. Unpunched and nm to nm-m. The bobble heads are of Alex Rodriguez and Oliver Perez. The Bobble Doubles figure of Rodriguez as a Texas Ranger is mint in the original box. The boxless Perez bobble is ex-m. The jerseys are size medium store models for the Expos (vg-ex), which concluded business in Montreal in 2004, and the Astros (nm). Publications are the April 30, 1980 issue of “Inside Sports” with Nolan Ryan on the cover, nm-m; the Feb. 23, 2000 “Sporting News” with Ken Griffey, Jr., on the cover, nm-m; the 1952 “Rawlings Official Baseball Rules,” nm; and “The AllStar Legend,” 1977, nm. Also: A 1994 Cincinnati Reds plastic cup from Coke commemorating the first televised baseball game (in 1939), nm; three “USA Today” full pages with Johnny Bench promoting the All-Star Game (1990 and 1991), pages folded twice; a rolled poster from the 1994 All-Star Game that reproduces All-Star program covers, 1933-93; and a 1988 “Reggie Jackson: ‘Mr. October’” VHS.

Lot 375.  Bert Sugar’s TSN “Baseball Register” Collection – 31 Issues from 1946-2003. Even with the increase in information on the Internet, the “Register” from “The Sporting News” remains a valuable resource, providing player minor and major league statistics in a single “file.” The earlier copies from Sugar’s shelves of reference materials are especially well used. Some still contain his post-it notes used to mark pages: 1946, g; 1950, Joe DiMaggio cover, p-f; 1951, vg; 1952, ex+; 1955, back cover loose, g+; 1956, vg-ex; 1957, p; 1959, g+; 1961, edges taped, vg; 1963, vg; 1964, vg-ex; 1966, Koufax cover, vg-ex; 1967, Frank and Brooks Robinson cover, vg+; 1968, vg+; 1969, ex+; 1971, Mays cover, vg+ to ex; 1972, Torre cover, ex-m; 1973, ex; 1974, Rose cover, vg-ex; 1975, Hunter, vg-ex; 1976, Palmer, ex-m; 1977, Joe Morgan, nm; 1978, Carew, vg+; 1979, vg-ex; 1980 Yastrzemski, 1981 Brett, 1982 Valenzuela and 1983 Sutter, all ex to ex-m; 1985vg+; 1986, Mattingly, vg+ to ex, and 2003, Bonds and others, vg. This group comes with a letter of authenticity, signed by Mrs. Sugar, saying it is from the Bert Sugar collection.

Lot 376.  20+ Baseball Guides and Other Annuals and Publications Spanning 1906-59. The earliest publication is “Napoleon Lajoie’s Official Base Ball Guide” from 1906. Lacking covers, it is otherwise complete and contains Van Oeyen and Horner photos. The premier publication in the group is “Who’s Who in Major League Baseball,” the wonderful 1933 hardcover edited by Harold (Speed) Johnson. The covers of this copy remain connected but are detached from the interior. At least 20 leafs (40 pages) have been cut, removing photos of Foxx, Gehrig, Gomez, Grove, Hubbell, Medwick, Ruth, Ruffing, Terry, Cobb, Mathewson, Marquard, Bresnahan, Bender, Plank, Baker, Waddell, Young, Alexander and others. Generally, information on these players remains, and photos and biographical sketches of more than 400 players are present. Here is a list of the other publications – “Baseball Bat Bag”: From “Baseball Magazine,” featuring “Forty Years of Odd Baseball Records,” 1925 g-vg and 1924 vg. “Batting Averages at a Glance”: From “The Sporting News” by Paul A. S. Barnes)”: 1945, stained covers, otherwise vg, and 1946 vg. “Official Base Ball Rules Adopted by the National and American Leagues”: Revised for 1939 and written by John B. Foster, ex. “Official Baseball Rules, 1959 Edition”: Published by “The Sporting News,” vg-ex. “Sporting News Record Book”: 1936, Hank Greenberg cover, vg+, and 1940, g. “Who’s Who in Baseball”: 1980 reprint of the 1926 edition, Max Carey cover, nm And “Who’s Who in the Major Leagues” (Callahan-Carmichael): 1937, no cover, pages probably missing, p; 1948, hardcover, vg-ex; and 1952, hardcover, vg-ex.

Lot 401.  12 Disney 1950s Bread Labels – Mickey Mouse (Baseball Player), Donald Duck, Bambi, Etc. Eight labels are from the “Cartoon Characters” set, and four from the “Occupations” set. Figures from the “Characters” set are Bambi, Bongo, Brer Bear, Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Cleo, Daisy Duck, Dewey and Donald Duck. Mickey Mouse is present in the “Occupations” set as a Baseball Player; Donald Duck as a Skater; and Goofy as a Boxer and Skier. Generally g-vg.
