Pittsburgh Pirates   36 Lots       »

Lot 686.  4 Panoramic Photos of the 1909 Pittsburgh-Detroit World Series in The Index. Billed as “Pittsburgh’s Illustrated Weekly,” The Index provides World Series scenes from Pittsburgh and Detroit in its Oct. 18 issue. The front and back covers provide a 15 ¾” x 21 ½” Forbes Field crowd scene. A two-page center spread has panoramic photos of a game at Forbes Field on Oct. 8, a photo of fans leaving Forbes Field on Oct. 9 and a panoramic view of an Oct. 11 game at Detroit’s Bennett Park. The teams split the Pittsburgh games, and the Pirates won the Bennett Park game. This Series featured two greats of the game, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Wagner batted .333, and Cobb, .231. But the top players of the Series were Pittsburgh’s Tommy Leach, who batted .360 and scored eight times, and Babe Adams, who allowed only four earned runs while pitching three complete games. The front and back covers of The Index have tears and chips and grade g. Measuring 15.75” x 21.25”, the two-page spread is vg-ex with stains on the top two edges and “55” written on the right page. The interior is much better than the covers.

Lot 694.  1941 Program and Ticket for a Pittsburgh Dinner Honoring Paul and Lloyd Waner. The Pittsburgh Sports Writers conducted the event. Both players are pictured on the cover of the eight-page program, which is vg+ with some soiling at the top. The ticket also is vg+. Ex with soiling and cracking on the graphics, primarily at the left. The tip is strong. The 1950 Pirates were the second-worst team in baseball, which didn’t prompt a high level of pennant sales.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 697.  Joe E. Brown, Bill Virdon and Frank Thomas Autographs on a 1957 Pirates Dinner Program. The comedian-actor, the Pirates outfielders and Pennsylvania Governor George M. Lot 699.  Ticket Stub for the Opening Home Game of the Pittsburgh Pirates 1959 Season. Lot 700.  Pittsburgh Pirates 1960 “Beat ‘Em Bucs” Championship Plaque – Unused in the Original Box! “Beat ‘Em Bucs” was the battle cry of Pirates fans as they won their first pennant in 33 years. A Pittsburgh area firm produced these 7.25” x 10.5” plaster plaques to celebrate the team’s success. The sculpture depicts a pirate, crossed bats and a glove holding a ball. This example may very well never have been out of the box. It is nm-m+ with several very minor imperfections – a tiny chip over the Pirates’ left eye, a possible rub mark on his bandana and a small spot on one bat where the paint apparently didn’t cover. The plaque retains a removable label that says “National League Pennant Winners, Pittsburgh Pirates.” The label has been damaged by tape. The box is ex-m.
Winning Bid $75.
