Lot 469. George Gibson Autograph on a George Burke Vintage 8” x 9.75” B&W Photo. Gibson caught for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1905-16 and had two terms as the team’s manager, 1920-22 and 1932-34. He helped the team to win the 1909 World Series against Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers. Born in Canada, he is a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. He died in 1967. Gibson’s personalized autograph is nm 7 to nm-m 8. Below it, he added “Pittsburgh Pirates” and his tenure with the team. The photo is superb, and the autograph, large, distinctive and authenticated by Kevin Keating. A letter signed by Mrs. Sugar is included; it verifies that this item is from Bert Sugar’s collection.

Lot 686. 4 Panoramic Photos of the 1909 Pittsburgh-Detroit World Series in The Index. Billed as “Pittsburgh’s Illustrated Weekly,” The Index provides World Series scenes from Pittsburgh and Detroit in its Oct. 18 issue. The front and back covers provide a 15 ¾” x 21 ½” Forbes Field crowd scene. A two-page center spread has panoramic photos of a game at Forbes Field on Oct. 8, a photo of fans leaving Forbes Field on Oct. 9 and a panoramic view of an Oct. 11 game at Detroit’s Bennett Park. The teams split the Pittsburgh games, and the Pirates won the Bennett Park game. This Series featured two greats of the game, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Wagner batted .333, and Cobb, .231. But the top players of the Series were Pittsburgh’s Tommy Leach, who batted .360 and scored eight times, and Babe Adams, who allowed only four earned runs while pitching three complete games. The front and back covers of The Index have tears and chips and grade g. Measuring 15.75” x 21.25”, the two-page spread is vg-ex with stains on the top two edges and “55” written on the right page. The interior is much better than the covers.

Lot 687. Pittsburgh Pirates Ticket Stubs for a July 4, 1921 Doubleheader. Pittsburgh split the two games with St. Louis, winning the first, 5-2, and dropping the second, 6-3. Rogers Hornsby had six hits in the two games, including a two doubles and two triples. He batted .397 for the season. The stubs, one marked “AM” and the other, “PM,” are rain checks neatly separated from the remainder of the ticket. The ticket for the first game is g+ to vg, and the second, vg+.

Lot 688. 5 Pie Traynor Collectibles Including a Money Clip, a Photo and 3 Vintage Baseball Cards. The money clip, which is ex, is engraved with Traynor’s name, “Solomon Lodge No. 231” and “1-5-67.” No. 231 is a Freemason Lodge in Pittsburgh. Traynor is in uniform in a vintage 3.5” x 3.5” b&w photo on a 5” x 5” mount. Vg-ex. The cards are: 1925-31 Postcard Back Exhibit, g-vg; 1929 R316 Kashin, framed to 6” x 8”, vg-ex appearance as framed; and 1936 R311 Glossy Finish, vg+. Traynor was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1948.

Lot 689. Glossy 8” x 10” B&W Photo of the 1927 N.L. Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Perfect images of the players, including Kiki Cuyler, Joe Cronin, Pie Traynor, Paul Waner and Lloyd Waner. Owner Barney Dreyfuss also is pictured. Ex photo with rounded corners and likely printed in the 1920s or 1930s.

Baseball Magazine Poster of the “Pittsburgh ‘Pirates’ – 1927 Pennant Winners.” Among these Pirates, who faced the New York Yankees in the World Series, are six future members of the Hall of Fame – Paul and Lloyd Waner, Pie Traynor, Joe Cronin, Kiki Cuyler and owner Barney Dreyfuss. The poster is about 9.5” x 11”, matted and framed to 12.5” x 15.5”. It has an nm appearance as framed.

Lot 692. Rosey Rowswell “Radio Scorecard” for a Sept. 8, 1938 Pittsburgh at Cincinnati Game. Rowswell broadcast Pirates games from 1936 until his death in 1955. On the scorecard cover, he promotes Mobil gasoline, the sponsor of the scorecard. The 1938 schedule and Pirates 1937 statistics are on the back. Neatly scored and ex.

Lot 693. 1941 Cincinnati at Pittsburgh 5-Cent Scorecard. Neatly scored in pencil for a Pittsburgh victory, this scorecard is trimmed somewhat irregularly and has the Pirates home schedule on the back. Vg-ex as trimmed.

Lot 694. 1941 Program and Ticket for a Pittsburgh Dinner Honoring Paul and Lloyd Waner. The Pittsburgh Sports Writers conducted the event. From 1927 through 1939, the Waner brothers helped to give Pittsburgh one of the strongest outfields in baseball. After the 1940 season, the Pirates released Paul, and in early 1941, they traded Lloyd to Boston. Both players are pictured on the cover of the eight-page program, which is vg+ with some soiling at the top. The ticket also is vg+. A member of the 3,000-hit club with a .333 career batting average, Paul was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1952. A .316 career batter, Lloyd was enshrined in 1967.

Lot 695. Color Photo of the 1950 Pittsburgh Pirates. This 8.75” x 11.25 photo is printed with the players’ names at the bottom. Ralph Kiner was the star of this team, which posted a 57-96 record. Vg.

Lot 696. Rare 1950 Pittsburgh Pirates Full-Sized Scroll Pennant with Kiner, Murtaugh, Etc. White, beige and gray pennant on burgundy with a scroll listing 24 Pirates, including manger Bill Meyer and such players as Ralph Kiner, Danny Murtaugh and Vernon Law. Ex with soiling and cracking on the graphics, primarily at the left. The tip is strong. The 1950 Pirates were the second-worst team in baseball, which didn’t prompt a high level of pennant sales.

Lot 697. Joe E. Brown, Bill Virdon and Frank Thomas Autographs on a 1957 Pirates Dinner Program. The comedian-actor, the Pirates outfielders and Pennsylvania Governor George M. Leader signed the program for an April 15 “Welcome Home Pittsburgh Pirates Dinner.” Thomas and Virdon signed the front cover of the eight-page program in pencil. The autographs of Brown and Leader are large on the back cover. Nm-m 8 and better signatures. The father of Pirates general manager Joe L. Brown, Joe E. was the toastmaster for the dinner. Leader was one of the speakers. The program is stained in the lower left, and the cover has two stains toward the top. The interior includes a team picture.
