Lot 502. Tommy John Autographed “T.J.: My 26 Years in Baseball.” Gem mint unusual signature on the flyleaf; John drew a smiley face inside the bottom loop of the “J”! In offering hundreds of John autographs, we have never seen this variation before. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Published in 1991, the apparent first edition hardback is nm in an ex dust jacket. John is 26th on the all-time major league victory list with 288. Only six left-handers have won more games.

Lot 509. Phil Rizzuto’s Signed Book on the 1949-53 Yankees – “The October Twelve.” Rizzuto (died 2007) autographed the title page and added “Holy Cow, HOF94, #10” and “MVP 1950.” Ink coverage on the first “P” is light; the autograph and additions are nm-m 8. Yogi Berra wrote the introduction to the 1994 stated first edition, which is subtitled “Five Years of New York Yankees Glory, 1949-1953.” The book is ex-m, and the dust jacket, ex. Lot 513. “Stengel: His Life and Times” Signed by the Author, Robert W Creamer. From its creation in 1954 until 1984, Creamer served as senior editor for “Sports Illustrated.” His works include what is generally considered the definitive biography of Babe Ruth. He signed a page listing his books in this 1984 biography of Stengel. Creamer also placed his signature on a personalized unlined index card and at the close of a handwritten note in which he thanks a writer for “one of the nicest letters I’ve ever received.” All of the autographs are mint 9 to gem mint 10. Creamer died in 2012. The book and the dust jacket are ex. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 531. 7 Scarves or Handkerchiefs from Tommy John’s First 4 Teams. In 26 seasons John pitched for six teams. He began his career with the Cleveland Indians, represented here by a 19.5” x 20.5” cotton scarf from the 1995 season. The item has “Indians” in the center surrounded by a diamond with Chief Wahoo at each of the bases. “Cleveland” is in each of the corners of the scarf. The symbol of John’s next stop, the Chicago White Sox, is a silk-like acetate 26.5” x 26.5” red, black and white scarf. “Chicago White Sox” is in the center, with the team’s 1971-75 batter and sock logo in the corners. Another silk-like scarf, 26” x 26”, presents the Los Angeles Dodgers’ logo in blue and red on a white field. The border is outlined in Dodger blue. Another Dodger scarf or large handkerchief, 21” x 22” and apparently made of cotton, commemorates the 1977 World Series between the Dodgers and New York Yankees. It is red and blue on white. John played for the New York Yankees 1979-82 and returned for 1986-89. A 1988 “Strikeout Hanky” featuring Bill Gallo illustrations is 15.25” x 16.5”. There are three copies of these orange and blue on white cotton hankies. These items are wrinkled, but otherwise nm to nm-m. Comes with a signed “Property of Thomas Edward John” label.

Lot 659. 3 “Life” and 4 “Sport” Issues with Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams or Mickey Mantle Covers. DiMaggio is the cover subject of two issues of “Life”: May 1, 1939, vg without a label, and Aug. 1, 1949, vg+ to ex. He also is on the covers of two issues of Sport: Sept. 1947, front cover attached along 2” toward the top of the spine, g-vg, and Sept. 1949, vg. Williams is on the Sept. 1951 cover, g+ issue, and April 1948, g-vg. Mantle made the cover of the July 30, 1965 issue of “Life,” ex-m.

Lot 666. Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford Store Model Baseball Gloves. Mantle and Ford were close friends. In the introduction to Ford’s book “Slick,” Mantle wrote, “I know men are not supposed to talk about love for other men, especially so-called macho athletes, but I don’t mind telling you that I love Whitey Ford. I couldn’t love him more if he was my own brother.” Together they helped the New York Yankees to win five world championships. The Mantle glove is a Rawlings GJ990 model, and the Ford, a Spalding 42-241 specimen. Both gloves are vg. Ford’s name and most of the other stampings remain strong. The cloth label is missing. Mantle’s stamped name is strong; the other stampings vary, and the Rawlings cloth patch is frayed. Both gloves are for a right-hander and will fit a smaller adult hand.
