Lot 562.  Tommy John Assortment of Publications, a Stein and Figures from Various Sports. NASCAR is among the topics covered in this collection. Robert G. Hagstrom covers the sport in “The NASCAR Way: The Business That Drives the Sport,” 1998 apparent first edition, ex-m book and dust jacket. Two NASCAR programs accompany the book, one for the 2002 Checker Auto Parts 500 and the other, for the 2006 Coca-Cola 600. Both are nm. There also is an 8” x 10” card of Mike Skinner and a Holiday Inn commemorative keycard fir the Daytona 500. A program for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles is among the offerings, ex-m. So are two cups, a bowl and two plates from the same Olympiad. Sam the Olympic Eagle is on each item, and on the cups, he boxes and plays baseball, basketball, soccer. Ex-m. Six books are included: “The Giant Book of Sports Trivia,” Damien Christopher, 182 softcover, vg; “Sports in America,” James A. Michener, 1976 first edition hardback, vg-ex book, vg dust jacket; “Once They Heard the Cheers,” W. C. Heinz, 1979 first edition, vg+ to ex book vg dj; “Charlie Hoffar’s Sports Gems,” Bill Schroeder, 1980, vg softcover; “The Book of Sports Lists,” Phil Pepe, 1979 first printing softcover, vg; and “Great Sports Upsets 2,” Bill Gutman, 1993, g+ to vg. Other publications are: “Polo 72,” three copies, two ex-m and one vg; “Sports Illustrated,” June 18, 1973, George Foreman cover, g-vg, and Feb. 10, 1982, the “Year in Sports, “ edition, vg+ to ex; “The Sporting News,” Feb. 4, 1985, Wayne Gretzky cover, horizontal fold, vg+ to ex, and “Tennis Week,” May 19, 1983, John McEnroe cover, vg. There is a pin for the Bert Convy Tennis Tournament. A basketball stein, a signed photo, a Chicago Bulls cap and collectible figures make up another part of this collection. The stein is the 1991 Budweiser “Heroes of the Hardwood,” which commemorates the 100th anniversary of basketball. Nm-m. Travis Knight, who played for Connecticut and then in the NBA, autographed an 8” x 10” color photo. Nm-=m 8. The adjustable Bulls cap is nm-m. Kenner produced five figures: 1994 Staring Lineup, Dan Marino, football; Doug Gilmour, hockey; 1996 Starting Lineup, Pooh Richardson, basketball; and official Officieel Goedgekeurd Sportsatars, 1989, Antonia D.O.F. Careca and Diego A. Maradona, soccer. The figures are mint in packages that range from f to ex-m. Soccer is represented also by a full-sized pennant of the North American Soccer League. The pennant identifies the Cosmos as “NASL Champions” in 1972, 1977, 1978 and 1980. Ex. The league was formed in 1970 and folded in 1985. Headliners produced figures in 1997 of Allen Iverson and Horace Grant, mint in ex-m packages, one with price stickers. Dan Marino is featured in a 1992 JusToys Bend-Ems figure, mint on a g-vg card. There are three different Florida Panthers hockey pucks, each with a different logo, including one from the 1993-94 inaugural season. Nm. An 8-ounce coke bottle also commemorates the season. Another puck is from Stan Mikita’s restaurant. Five signed “Property of Thomas Edward John” labels come with these publications and figures. Also, five U.S. Amateur Boxing Federation pins. Kevin Keating authenticated the autographs.

Lot 742.  13 1948-52 W469 Exhibit Supply Company Sports Champions Cards. The Sports Champions set contains athletes from various sports events, including the Olympics. Football stars in this collection are Sam Baugh (thin paper version) ex+, “Bump” Elliott (U. of Michigan) f, Otto Graham p-f, Jack Jacobs (Packers, thin paper) vg, Sid Luckman (Bears) vg, John Lujack (Notre Dame and Bears, thin paper version pasted onto another exhibit card) p and Bulldog Turner (Bears, thin paper pasted onto exhibit stock) p. Olympics champions are Ann Curtis (swimming) vg-ex and Sonja Henie (thin paper version) ex. Tennis is represented by Jack Kramer (Davis Cup, 2 cards, slight color variations) both ex and Bobby Riggs (3 Grand Slam titles) vg-ex. There also is a card of Dick Miles, table tennis national singles champion ex.

Lot 743.  6 1952 Wheaties Cards Including Sam Snead and Basketball HoFers Jim Pollard. These cards have images of Charlie Diehl, diving star, action, ex-m; Ned Day, bowling champion, portrait, ex+; Gretchen Fraser, skiing champion, action, vg-ex; Jimmy Patterson, diving star, portrait ex-m and action ex; and Jim Pollard g-vg.

Lot 744.  7 Unopened Card Packs – 3 Football, 2 Basketball and 2 Hockey. The football packs are 1974 Fleer Football Patches, 1989 Topps wax and 1990 Fleer Premier Edition rak-pak of 45 cards. Basketball: 1969 Fleer Basketball Patches and 1993-94 jumbo pack of 23 cards. And Hockey: 1994-95 Pinnacle Series 1 Hobby pack of 14 and 1994-95 Select Premier Edition Hobby pack.

Lot 745.  1940s Autograph Book with 40+ Baseball, Golf, Track & Field and Other Signatures. These autographs are generally nm-m 8 or better on cuts of various sizes and some index cards or paper the size of index cars. Almost all of the signatures have been taped into the book; the tape does not affect the autograph. The baseball signature are by Jimmy Archer, Phil Cavaretta, Spud Chandler, Roger Cramer, Harry Danning, Leo Durocher, Eddie Dyer, Fred Fitzsimmons, Bert Haas, Stan Hack, Mel Harder, Bill Jurges, Ken Keltner, Larry Jansen, Bill Jurges, Dutch Leonard, Mickey Livingston, Frank McCormick, Dan MacFayden, Archie McKain, Bill Nicholson, Lefty O’Doul, John Riddle & Rip Sewell, Hank Sauer, Hal Schumacher, Burt Shotton, Fred Snodgrass, Eddie Stanky, George Vico (2), Jo Jo White, and Roger Wolff. Other signers include Dick Button (HoF figure skater), Glenn Cunningham (track HoF), Marty Furgol (golfer), Bob Kurland (basketball HoF), Elmer Lach (hockey HoF), Mel Patton (track HoF), Peter Donald (radio host and vaudevillian), Al Goodman (singer) and four unknowns. A nice mix of pencil and ink signatures, almost all of which can be removed and cleanly displayed independently!

Lot 746.  Baseballs Single-Signed by 7 Sports Stars – Savage, Carl Lewis, Borg, Capriati, Etc. These autographs are nm-m 8 and better on nm-m or better baseballs. All signed the sweet spot, or the west panel and extended the autograph to the sweet spot. Five autographed Rawlings “Official League” baseballs: Macho Man Randy Savage, the wrestling great who died in 2011; Janet Evans, Olympics gold medalist in swimming in 1988 and 1992; Bjorn Borg, who won 11 Grand Slam tennis singles events; Jennifer Capriati, who won three women’s singles Grand Slam tournaments; and A J Foyt (mostly on the west panel), whose victories include the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. Carl Lewis, winner of nine Olympics and eight World Championships gold medals in track and field, signed an OAL Bobby Brown ball that shows scattered discoloration. Jerry Glanville autographed an ONL William White baseball. Glanville coached college and pro football and drove in the NASCAR Busch and Craftsman Truck Series. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 747.  Baseball Signed by Amanda Borden and Jaycie Phelps, 1996 U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Team. Dubbed the “Magnificent Seven” at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the members of the team earned the U.S. its first gold medal in the women’s team competition. For her leadership, Borden was selected as the team’s captain by the other members. Phelps signed the sweet spot of an ONL Coleman ball, and Borden, the north panel. Each added the year and the Olympic rings. Their autographs are nm 7 to nm-m 8. The off-white ball shows scattered discoloration.

Lot 748.  5 Autographs from the World of Track & Field. Three of these signers are in the National Track & Field Hall of Fame. 1. Earl Bell, nm-m 8 autograph on an 8” x10” photo with dual images. A pole vaulter and HoF member, he won the bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. 2. Ellery H. Clark Jr. (died 1997) autographed 3” x 5” card; mint 9 signature. A professor of English and naval history and the track coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, Clark wrote three books on the Boston Red Sox and biographies of Cy Young, Tris Speaker, Lefty Grove, Joe Cronin and Smokey Joe Wood. He won a gold medal in speed walking in the Senior Olympics. 3. Payton Jordan (d. 2009) 4”x6” color photo boldly signed (mint 9) and dated “’87” by this famed track HOF coach! He coached at Occidental College and Stanford and was the coach of the 1968 U.S. Olympic track & field team. 4. Joe Yancey (d. 1991), “J. J. Yancey, Jr.” autograph (nm-m 8) as part of a return address on a full envelope postmarked 1972. This famed HoF track coach helped to develop many U.S. athletes and coached the Jamaican Olympic team in 1948, 1952 and 1956. 5. Larry Young, nm 7 to nm-m 8 autograph above a 6” x 5” photo in a 1972 issue of the “New York Times.” Young was a two-time Olympic medalist. He was the last American to medal in the Olympics walking competition.

Lot 749.  Autograph of Ralph Higgins, Oklahoma State Coach and National Track & Field HoFer. A 1925 Oklahoma State graduate (when it was Oklahoma A&M), Higgins became the university’s head track coach in 1935. Over the next 32 years, his teams there won multiple titles, including 17-straight Missouri Valley Conference team championships. His 1954 cross country team won the national collegiate title, and his 1965 indoor track team was second at the national collegiate championships. After leaving OSU, he helped coach the U.S. Army track team. He was inducted into the National Track & Field HoF in 1982. He died in 1993, and his autograph is rare. This group contains three autographs, all sent at the same time to one collector: 1. A signed note —“only picture I have at hand.” 2. A signature on the verso of a trimmed snapshot referred to in Higgins’ note. The photo is of an elderly Higgins. 3. The full envelope, signed “Ralph H,” which was used to mail the first two back to the waiting collector. Kevin Keating authenticated the signatures. The autograph on the note and the back of the photo are nm-m 8. Here is a trifecta of related material representing the full universe of Higgins’ autographs that we have seen!

Lot 750.  20 Figure Skater Autographs. Includes 8” x10” photos signed by Anna Galmarini, Dick Button (personalized), Freddie Trenkler (personalized), and Calla Urbanski and Rocky Marval (2, both personalized). Photos about 5” x 7” are signed by Elaine Zayak, Lawrence Demmy (program photo, horizontal fold), Michael Chack (personalized), Tonia Kwiatkowski (personalized; signed a post-it note as well) and Lisa Spitz (first name only). Calla Urbanski and Joe Mero 2.5” x 9” signed photos cards listing their accomplishments. Smaller photos have the autographs of Tenley Albright (signed on back, personalized), Pierre and Andree Brunet (signed on back by both), Scott Gregory (personalized), Rosalynn Sumners (personalized) and one other. April Sargent signed a homemade greeting card, and Scott Gregory signed a note. All but two of the autographs are nm 7 or better, and they average nm-m 8. The items exhibit minor overall handling wear. Most photos are glossy, although a few are on paper stock. A nice group from a sport that is seldom represented in autograph collections!

Lot 752.  15 1962 Issues of “Soccer Star” and a 1961 Copy of “F.A. News.” Both are British publications. “Soccer Star” issues are from 1962: Jan. 27; June 1, 19, 16, 23 and 30; July 7; Sept. 1, 8 and 15; Oct. 27; and Dec. 8, 15, 22 and 29. The “F.A. News,” the “Official Journal of the Football Association,” is from Oct. 1961. These publications average vg-ex.

Lot 754.  5 Different 1907 Cracker Jack Bears Postcards – 2 with President Theodore Roosevelt. The cards depicting President Roosevelt are No. 7, “Delighted said our nations head” and No. 15, “Oh Mr. Teddy drop your gun.” The latter card has the President near Yellowstone Park. The three other cards are No. 6, “The ‘Cracker Jacks’ to New York went”; No. 11, two bears with a circus elephant; and No. 14, “Here’s where we make our ‘Cracker Jack’.” Cards 6, 7 and 15 were mailed and postmarked from 1907-09. No. 11 has no writing on the back. With the writing not taken into consideration the cards average g to vg.
