Baseball Photography   11 Lots

Lot 686.  4 Panoramic Photos of the 1909 Pittsburgh-Detroit World Series in The Index. Billed as “Pittsburgh’s Illustrated Weekly,” The Index provides World Series scenes from Pittsburgh and Detroit in its Oct. 18 issue. The front and back covers provide a 15 ¾” x 21 ½” Forbes Field crowd scene. A two-page center spread has panoramic photos of a game at Forbes Field on Oct. 8, a photo of fans leaving Forbes Field on Oct. 9 and a panoramic view of an Oct. 11 game at Detroit’s Bennett Park. The teams split the Pittsburgh games, and the Pirates won the Bennett Park game. This Series featured two greats of the game, Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Wagner batted .333, and Cobb, .231. But the top players of the Series were Pittsburgh’s Tommy Leach, who batted .360 and scored eight times, and Babe Adams, who allowed only four earned runs while pitching three complete games. The front and back covers of The Index have tears and chips and grade g. Measuring 15.75” x 21.25”, the two-page spread is vg-ex with stains on the top two edges and “55” written on the right page.
