Lot 653.  Early 1900s Baseball Mechanical Scorer from A. G. Spalding & Bros. This device for recording balls and strikes has the Spalding logo on one side. Vg.

Lot 654.  7” x 10” Color Baseball Cover from the May 1911 “The Outing Magazine.” This magazine was popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. In serial form, it first published Jack London’s “White Fang” novel. Featuring excellent artwork, the cover is f and mounted on a 9” x 12” plaque.

Lot 655.  Framed Box Lid for “Pat Moran’s Own Ball Game” from 1919. Moran led the Cincinnati Reds to the 1919 N.L. pennant and then to a world championship against the Black Sox of Chicago. Moran’s endorsement on the lid is dated Aug. 28, 1919, only weeks before the infamous World Series. Smith, Line & French of Philadelphia made the game. The box lid has tears and chips. It is matted to about 12” x 16”. The game is scarce.

Lot 656.  Rare Circa 1930s Mickey Mouse Celluloid Figure with a Baseball Bat. This seldom-encountered 2 7/8” figure has “Japan” impressed on the back. It appears to be hand-painted, and some of the red paint from Mickey’s bat is also on the right side of his face. There is a slight indentation on Mickey’s nose and a deeper indentation on the back of his right show.

Lot 657.  2 Scrapbooks with 1930s and Late 1940s-Early 1950s Newspaper Clippings. These are newer scrapbooks, each with approximately 80 pages of vintage material. One has 11 Willard Mullin illustrations and others by Al Demaree and Ed Burns. Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Al Schacht and Rogers Hornsby are among the players illustrated. Articles deal with Gabby Hartnett, Frankie Pytlak, Zeke Bonura, Dolph Camilli, Ducky Medwick, Grover Alexander, Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, the Pirates, rumors surrounding the Red Sox, Goose Goslin, Dizzy Dean, John Shibe, Monty Stratton, Johnny Mize and many more. The second scrapbook offers 1937 columns by Ed Burns of “The Chicago Tribune” and his sketches of several ball parks; a series titled “Minors Coming Up to the Majors,” including Rudy York, Johnny Hopp and Dizzy Trout; and a photo of Lou Gehrig being honored for appearing in his 1901st consecutive game. The second half of the scrapbook has 1940s-50s clippings, including articles, photos or both of Stan Musial, Spahn and Sain, Whitey Ford as a new member of the Yankees’ pitching staff, Sam Jethroe, Joe DiMaggio, Danny Murtaugh, Ted Williams, George Kell, Connie Mack and others. There are Mullin illustrations of DiMaggio, Richie Ashburn as Rookie of the year, and Rex Barney with the Brooklyn Bum. More than 175 pages of entertaining and informative reading and viewing here!

Lot 659.  3 “Life” and 4 “Sport” Issues with Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams or Mickey Mantle Covers. DiMaggio is the cover subject of two issues of “Life”: May 1, 1939, vg without a label, and Aug. 1, 1949, vg+ to ex. He also is on the covers of two issues of Sport: Sept. 1947, front cover attached along 2” toward the top of the spine, g-vg, and Sept. 1949, vg. Williams is on the Sept. 1951 cover, g+ issue, and April 1948, g-vg. Mantle made the cover of the July 30, 1965 issue of “Life,” ex-m.

Lot 660.  1940 Walter Johnson for Congress Pin. Slightly less than one inch in diameter, the pin shows relatively even foxing. The Garrison Toy and Novelty insert is in place. Vg+ to ex. After winning 417 major league games and then managing Washington and Cleveland, Johnson became a Montgomery County, MD, commissioner in 1938. Two years later, he won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Congress in the primary election, but lost the incumbent Democrat in the general election. The pin is from the primary.

Lot 661.  Attractive F J Raff 1948 “Autograph Baseball Game” Board. This 22.5” x 22.5” Masonite board has 36 facsimile autographs representing each of the major league teams. Among the names are Eddie Waitkus, Mickey Vernon, Ferris Fain, Enos Slaughter, Pee Wee Reese, Harry Brecheen, Early Wynn, Al (Red) Schoendienst, Johnny Pesky and Frank Gustine. Ex to ex-m.

Lot 662.  Rockwood Pottery 1949 MacGregor Goldsmith 6” Blue Ashtray. This uncommon advertising ashtray has a blue baseball on the front and the MacGregor Goldsmith name. The back has the Rockwood logo, XLIX and “MacGregor Goldsmith Scores in Every Field of Sport.” Nm-m.

Lot 663.  3 1950s to 1960 Baseball Games. 1. 1950 Ethan Allen’s All-Star Baseball Game – Special Edition with All-Time All-Stars by Cadaco-Ellis. This board game has discs for stars of the period such as Ted Williams and Stan Musial, and historical greats such as Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. All of the player discs listed are present. The game is ex overall. The box and lid have split along the seams. Two game tokens are missing, and the game may otherwise be incomplete. The discs average ex to ex-m. 2. 1953 Gotham Pressed Steel Magnetik Baseball. The metal board is vg-ex. The pieces for playing the game are missing. The board has an Auto Race game on the opposite side. 3. 1960 Tudor Tru-Action Electric Baseball Game. Ex-m+ game and pieces, vg-ex box. We believe the game is complete, but can’t guarantee that it is.

Lot 664.  1951 New York Giants Team Sheet with 34 Facsimile Autographs Including Mays. The facsimile signatures are bold on Giants letterhead. They include Willie Mays, Herman Franks, Al Corwin, Frank Bowman, Fred Fitzsimmons, Earl Rapp. Larry Jansen, Al Dark, Sheldon Jones, Whitey Lockman, Leo Durocher, Allen Gettel, Hank Schenz, Frank Shellenback, Monte Kennedy, Alex Konikowski, Bobby Thomson, Eddie Logan, Jim Hearn, Jack Lohrke, Sal Maglie, Ray Noble, Monte Irvin, Dave Koslo, Bill Rigney, Clint Hartung, Wes Westrum, Henry Thompson, George Spencer, Dave Williams, Sal Yvers and Eddie Stanky.

Lot 665.  Warren Spahn 1958-62 Original Hartland Statue. The plastic in this statue is off-white to yellow. The statue show light wear on Spahn’s chin, neck and left forearm.

Lot 666.  Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford Store Model Baseball Gloves. Mantle and Ford were close friends. In the introduction to Ford’s book “Slick,” Mantle wrote, “I know men are not supposed to talk about love for other men, especially so-called macho athletes, but I don’t mind telling you that I love Whitey Ford. I couldn’t love him more if he was my own brother.” Together they helped the New York Yankees to win five world championships. The Mantle glove is a Rawlings GJ990 model, and the Ford, a Spalding 42-241 specimen. Both gloves are vg. Ford’s name and most of the other stampings remain strong. The cloth label is missing. Mantle’s stamped name is strong; the other stampings vary, and the Rawlings cloth patch is frayed. Both gloves are for a right-hander and will fit a smaller adult hand.

Lot 667.  4 Store Model Baseball Gloves – Mike Schmidt, Albie Pearson and Tom Tresh. The adult-sized Rawlings GJ 54 Schmidt glove is vg-ex with strong stampings and a worn but intact patch. Some of the lacing has come undone. The Pearson “Professional” glove by Sonnett is attractive, ex to ex-m with bold stampings. Essentially formless, it is also pliable and can easily be worn by an adult. Rawlings made the Tom Tresh glove. Model GM15 for a right-hander, it is ex. Both the Pearson and Tresh gloves have metal buttons for closing the flap on the back. So does the fourth glove, which has no identifying marks. It appears to be from the 1940s.
