Lot 650. 19th Century Scorecard by “W.D” with a Baseball Scene on the Front. Measuring 5.5” x 5”, this scorecard has never been folded. It has a ½” split along the fold at the top and a crease. Inexplicably, the card was neatly scored for a 1959 game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers. The card is an 1800s original. G.

Lot 651. Vintage Corkball and Hanna Batrite No. SCB Corkball Bat. Corkball apparently originated in the streets of St. Louis as early as the 1890s and is still played by leagues around the country today. The advantage of the game is that it can be played in a small area, and no base running is involved. Hanna Batrite was in business in Athens, GA, from the 1920s-70s. The 37” bat has a maximum barrel diameter of something less than 1.5”. The bat shows good use, with some paint between the handle and the barrel. Engravings are light-to-moderate, with “ial” in “Official” and “Ball” in “Cork Ball” difficult to read. The ball, which shows no markings, is about 1.75” in diameter.

Lot 652. Scrapbook with 1899 and 1900 News Clippings on Baseball. This scrapbook contains woodcut portraits and baseball articles, apparently from “The New York Clipper.” It appears to have been assembled relatively recently. It presents vintage portraits of H. D. Quin, president of the American Association, J. Bently Seymour, Laven Cross, Thomas Dowd, Tim Flood, John B. Taylor, F. R. Kitson and Fred Ketchem. Articles cover or mention Cap Anson, Billy Sunday, Roger Bresnahan, indoor baseball, Rube Waddell, Ed Hanlon, Jack Glasscock and many more. Henry Chadwick, the father of baseball, is quoted as suggesting that the game might be improved by decreasing the number of balls from four to three and the number of strikes from three to four. The scrapbook has 19 pages of vintage material and 24 pages of photocopies of 1905 and 1905 “Sporting Life” team composites. The May 3, 1902 issue of “Sporting Life,” with significant tears and missing the front and back pages, is also included.

Lot 654. 7” x 10” Color Baseball Cover from the May 1911 “The Outing Magazine.” This magazine was popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. In serial form, it first published Jack London’s “White Fang” novel. Featuring excellent artwork, the cover is f and mounted on a 9” x 12” plaque.

Lot 655. Framed Box Lid for “Pat Moran’s Own Ball Game” from 1919. Moran led the Cincinnati Reds to the 1919 N.L. pennant and then to a world championship against the Black Sox of Chicago. Moran’s endorsement on the lid is dated Aug. 28, 1919, only weeks before the infamous World Series. Smith, Line & French of Philadelphia made the game. The box lid has tears and chips. It is matted to about 12” x 16”. The game is scarce.

Lot 656. Rare Circa 1930s Mickey Mouse Celluloid Figure with a Baseball Bat. This seldom-encountered 2 7/8” figure has “Japan” impressed on the back. It appears to be hand-painted, and some of the red paint from Mickey’s bat is also on the right side of his face. There is a slight indentation on Mickey’s nose and a deeper indentation on the back of his right show.

Lot 657. 2 Scrapbooks with 1930s and Late 1940s-Early 1950s Newspaper Clippings. These are newer scrapbooks, each with approximately 80 pages of vintage material. One has 11 Willard Mullin illustrations and others by Al Demaree and Ed Burns. Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Al Schacht and Rogers Hornsby are among the players illustrated. Articles deal with Gabby Hartnett, Frankie Pytlak, Zeke Bonura, Dolph Camilli, Ducky Medwick, Grover Alexander, Walter Johnson, Bob Feller, the Pirates, rumors surrounding the Red Sox, Goose Goslin, Dizzy Dean, John Shibe, Monty Stratton, Johnny Mize and many more. The second scrapbook offers 1937 columns by Ed Burns of “The Chicago Tribune” and his sketches of several ball parks; a series titled “Minors Coming Up to the Majors,” including Rudy York, Johnny Hopp and Dizzy Trout; and a photo of Lou Gehrig being honored for appearing in his 1901st consecutive game. The second half of the scrapbook has 1940s-50s clippings, including articles, photos or both of Stan Musial, Spahn and Sain, Whitey Ford as a new member of the Yankees’ pitching staff, Sam Jethroe, Joe DiMaggio, Danny Murtaugh, Ted Williams, George Kell, Connie Mack and others. Lot 660. 1940 Walter Johnson for Congress Pin. Slightly less than one inch in diameter, the pin shows relatively even foxing. The Garrison Toy and Novelty insert is in place. Vg+ to ex. After winning 417 major league games and then managing Washington and Cleveland, Johnson became a Montgomery County, MD, commissioner in 1938. Two years later, he won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Congress in the primary election, but lost the incumbent Democrat in the general election. The pin is from the primary.

This board game has discs for stars of the period such as Ted Williams and Stan Musial, and historical greats such as Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. All of the player discs listed are present. The game is ex overall. The box and lid have split along the seams. Two game tokens are missing, and the game may otherwise be incomplete.
