Lot 651.  Vintage Corkball and Hanna Batrite No. SCB Corkball Bat. Corkball apparently originated in the streets of St. Louis as early as the 1890s and is still played by leagues around the country today. The 37” bat has a maximum barrel diameter of something less than 1.5”. The bat shows good use, with some paint between the handle and the barrel. Engravings are light-to-moderate, with “ial” in “Official” and “Ball” in “Cork Ball” difficult to read. The ball, which shows no markings, is about 1.75” in diameter.
Winning Bid $20.

Articles cover or mention Cap Anson, Billy Sunday, Roger Bresnahan, indoor baseball, Rube Waddell, Ed Hanlon, Jack Glasscock and many more. Henry Chadwick, the father of baseball, is quoted as suggesting that the game might be improved by decreasing the number of balls from four to three and the number of strikes from three to four. The scrapbook has 19 pages of vintage material and 24 pages of photocopies of 1905 and 1905 “Sporting Life” team composites. The May 3, 1902 issue of “Sporting Life,” with significant tears and missing the front and back pages, is also included.
