Lot 475.  Frantz 1923 The Great American Game Tin Litho Baseball Game. Frantz made the original version of this game. Three editions followed, two by Hustler Toy and one by Schylling. The spinner for the game works, and all 18 wood pegs are present. The board, which features excellent graphics, shows one minor indentation. Very nice example. A letter signed by Mrs. Sugar is included; it verifies that this item is from Bert Sugar’s collection.

Lot 476.  1924 “The Knack of Batting,” a Louisville Slugger Pamphlet by J. B. Sheridan. This 40-page 3 5/8” x 6” publication provides batting tips and promotes Hillerich & Bradsby bats. Major stars are pictured, including George Sisler, George Kelly, Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Edd Roush, Eddie Collins and Ty Cobb. Vg. A letter signed by Mrs. Sugar is included; it verifies that this item is from Bert Sugar’s collection.

Lot 479.  1973 Baseball Hall of Fame Picture Pack. These 5” x 6.75” photos, accompanied by the original envelope, average nm. The players include Wagner, Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Ruth, Ted Williams, etc. The pack has a small scuff that affects two names and otherwise is vg. A letter signed by Mrs. Sugar is included; it verifies that this lot is from Bert Sugar’s collection.

Lot 530.  Tommy John Los Angeles Dodgers Memorabilia. John was part of the Dodgers organization from 1972-78. As a Dodger, he successfully underwent what has become known as “Tommy John surgery.” He also posted 87 of his 288 career victories there, including his first 20-win season, and finished second to Steve Carlton in the 1977 Cy Young voting. This group contains a number of items associated with the Dodgers: 1. Dodgers baseball commemorating the 30th anniversary of Dodger Stadium and autographed by John. Nm 7 autograph and nm-m baseball. 2. Dodgers license plate autographed by John, Manny Mota, Clem Labine and Ron Cey. Nm-m plate and autographs averaging nm-m 8. 3. Dodgers 1.75” red, white and blue pin with a ribbon and bat and ball attached. Nm-m pin. 4. “1974 Champions” 6” Dodgers pin with the team logo and facsimile autographs of team members. Lot 531.  7 Scarves or Handkerchiefs from Tommy John’s First 4 Teams. In 26 seasons John pitched for six teams. He began his career with the Cleveland Indians, represented here by a 19.5” x 20.5” cotton scarf from the 1995 season. The item has “Indians” in the center surrounded by a diamond with Chief Wahoo at each of the bases. “Cleveland” is in each of the corners of the scarf. The symbol of John’s next stop, the Chicago White Sox, is a silk-like acetate 26.5” x 26.5” red, black and white scarf. “Chicago White Sox” is in the center, with the team’s 1971-75 batter and sock logo in the corners. Another silk-like scarf, 26” x 26”, presents the Los Angeles Dodgers’ logo in blue and red on a white field. The border is outlined in Dodger blue. Another Dodger scarf or large handkerchief, 21” x 22” and apparently made of cotton, commemorates the 1977 World Series between the Dodgers and New York Yankees. It is red and blue on white. John played for the New York Yankees 1979-82 and returned for 1986-89. A 1988 “Strikeout Hanky” featuring Bill Gallo illustrations is 15.25” x 16.5”. There are three copies of these orange and blue on white cotton hankies. These items are wrinkled, but otherwise nm to nm-m. Comes with a signed “Property of Thomas Edward John” label.

Lot 532.  Tommy John Memorabilia - Autographs, Yankee Items, Gallo Illustrations, Etc. If you’re looking for a display item, you might like Stan Kotzen’s 8” x 10” artist proof, one of 50, of “Yankee Retired Numbers – a Grouping.” Matted to 11” x 14”, it includes Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, Munson, Maris, Stengel, Elston Howard, Reggie Jackson, Martin, Rizzuto, Ford, Berra and Dickey. Kotzen signed the proof. Several items autographed by John are offered: 2. Nicely signed 16” x 20” photo of him pitching for the Yankees. Nm-m 8 autograph, scratches on the photo. 3. Lot 533.  Box Lot of Memorabilia from Tommy John’s Baseball Career Including Autographs. Except for Roger Clemens, John has more major league victories than any other eligible pitcher who is not in the Hall of Fame. His 288 wins place him 26th on the all-time list. Among left-handers, only Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton, Eddie Plank, Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson and Lefty Grove won more games. A broad range of items, including autographs, make up this collection. One autograph is on a 1988 letter to John from Dallas (Green) upon his arrival as the New York Yankees’ new manager. A 1988 letter from Yankees GM Bob Quinn transmits John’s bonus to him, and a 1989 Quinn letter releases John. Both are signed “Bob.” One John autograph is on a letter thanking an organization for nominating him for an award. His autograph on the sweet spot of an Official Gulf Coast League ball is nm-m 8. The ball was used for practice and has a line of black tape around it. Sixty-eight pages of news clippings on photo album pages cover John in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 1978 pennant-winning season. John won 17 games in the regular season and one more in the World Series. His autographs are on four items, an 8” x 11” new clipping that shows him pitching, a scorecard for the second game of the 1978 playoff with Philadelphia (John pitched), a color 8” x 10” Dodgers team photo and an 8” x 10” b&w photo of John with a young fan. Two copies of a 1991 tabloid focusing on John’s high school, Gerstmeyer, have John on the front page, and an article is inside. A Christmas card with the high school on the front is also enclosed. Three copies of the Aug. 18, 1990 “Daily News” of New York report that John has received the newspaper’s “Front Page Award” for “his community service and volunteer work on behalf of the March of Dimes.” John is depicted in a Bill Gallo illustration. John is also on the cover of the Sept. 11, 1983 “New York Times Magazine.” Two Notices to Player of Release or Transfer are among the items. One dated Dec. 2, 1971 trades John from Chicago to Los Angeles, and another dated July 26, 1985 sends him to the Oakland A’s. Original scorecards for five games that John pitched for the Yankees and copies of scorecards for approximately 35 others are part of the collection. There are 12 programs for various award dinners and other events, including B.A.T. (Baseball Assistance Team) dinners, March of Dimes Sports Awards, the 1991 Gold Glove Awards, a New York Sports Museum event and the Field of Dreams Gala. Over the years, John supported numerous charitable causes. A Certificate of Appreciation from the American Heart Association is included. So are five copies of the program for John’s Ninth Annual Celebrity Golf Classic, which raised funds for cancer research. John signed a 16” mini bat labeled “Tommy John Lead Off Dinner 1999.” Some equipment is offered as part of this collection: Wilson size 36 gray pants with a 1983 team tag that has another player’s name; a pair of shoes John wore with the California Angels; an undershirt that he wore while pitching for the Angels; six pairs of socks and six pairs of stirrups. After the conclusion of his major league career, John coached in the minors. Collectibles from this period are two 2002 mugs from the Harrisburg Senators; a cap, a signed folder and a signed 8” x 10” photo from the Edmonton Trappers; and a signed photo and an autographed seat cushion from the Bridgeport Bluefish. There also is a Charlotte Knights signed cushion. Other collectibles include: Photocopies of three John contracts; a copy of an arbitration decision involving John; snapshot photos of Cal Ripken Jr. and Ton LaRussa; a “Shoe” comic strip (clipped from a newspaper) mentioning John; a 1955 program for the Terre Haute Huts of the Triple I League; two Bergen Cliff Hawks 18” mini bats; a copy of the Major League Baseball Players Welfare Plan for 1998; a cloth bag from Rawlings 1992 Gold Glove Award; a glass with John’s #25 on it; two 1978 RC Cola cans with John; a signed photo of John at a basketball event; a Randy “Macho Madness” Savage T-shirt; a signed T-shirt from John’s baseball school, an 18” Phillie Phanatic stuffed doll, a Twin City Dunkers glass display listing award recipients from 1948-93 and some surprises as well. Items generally are ex or better. Autographs are nm-m 8 or better. This lot comes with a letter signed by John saying the items are from his collection. Lot 534.  Bobble Heads, Figurines and Mugs from Tommy John’s Collection – Paige, Gehrig, Etc. Three bobbing heads and a figurine from the minor leagues are part of this uncommon assortment of 12 items. Bobble Dobbles (Alexander Global Promotions) produced five pieces - nodders of Satchel Paige (2004); Rocky, the mascot of the Memphis Chicks; and a Madison Mallards “Happy Holidays” bobble; and figurines of Mighty Maynard, the Mallards’ mascot, and Lou Gehrig. Nm-m, except for Gehrig; the figurine has a slight crack in his bat and has been repaired at the ankles. The nodder of Paige has him with Cleveland, and his left leg is raised as he prepares to deliver a pitch. All of these figures are about 7.5” tall. There also is an autographed 6.5” bobbing head of Brandon Phillips as a member of the Buffalo Bisons. Phillips played at least part of the 2002-05 seasons with Buffalo. The autographs is mint 9 on the base of the nodder. A stylized 8.25 figure of a young baseball player; a Budweiser pewter mug with a glass bottom and “Tommy” engraved on the back; Star mugs by LK Sports of Andre Dawson and Orel Hersheiser, and a mug apparently made for John in 1982. Generally nm-m. Two signed “Property of Thomas Edward John” labels are included. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 536.  Tommy John Collection of Baseball Pinbacks, Key Chains, a Money Clip, Etc. This group includes a money clip presented to John in 1993. His initials are engraved on the front. Lot 537.  Circa 1940s-50s Half Pint Glass Milk Bottle Featuring a Baseball Pitcher. With text that says “After the Game Cool Off with Milk & Keep Fit!” the image of the pitcher is in red on one side of the clear-glass bottle. The name of the Williamsport milk producer, the McDaniels Dairy, is on the opposite side. Ex+. Comes with a signed “Property of Thomas Edward John” label.

Lot 538.  Tommy John Collection of 75 Game-Used Baseballs. These baseballs are predominantly major and minor leagues official balls that John accumulated during his career. Many are worn enough that the league cannot be determined. John signed a game-used OAL Bobby Brown ball. His signature is nm-m 8 and authenticated by Kevin Keating. The other baseballs would be excellent for practice for a youth team. Comes with a signed “Property of Thomas Edward John” label.

Lot 541.  Tommy John’s “Sporting News” Annuals – Registers, Guides Plus Other Publications. One publication is autographed – John’s own copy of the National League 1977 “Green Book.” His name is imprinted on the cover in gold, and his autograph is nm-m 8. Copies of the “Baseball Register” are from 1970 (Seaver cover), 1971 (Mays), 1972 (2, Torre), 197 5 (Hunter), 1977 (Morgan), 1978 (Carew) and 1996 (Maddux). The 1970-77 editions are vg (with pages better than the covers); 1978 is ex, and 1996, nm. One of the 1972 issues is hardbound; it is ex-m. Three “Baseball Guides” are included: 1975, ex+; 1978, ex; and 1996, Ripken cover, nm. Lot 650.  19th Century Scorecard by “W.D” with a Baseball Scene on the Front. Measuring 5.5” x 5”, this scorecard has never been folded. It has a ½” split along the fold at the top and a crease. Inexplicably, the card was neatly scored for a 1959 game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers. The card is an 1800s original. G.
