Lot 150.  5 Different 1889 H804-1B Tobin Litho “Baby Talk Series” Cards with Baby Anson, Kelly. These trade cards have white borders, red framing and “5.” in the lower left border. Two Hall of Fame players are represented, Cap Anson and King Kelly. The cards are: 1. “Fee Stykes, out” (Lord Fauntleroy), pin hole at the top; otherwise g. 2. “Oh, Id dot it” (Kingdom Gould), vg. 3. “Oh, Mamma!” (Baby Anson), vg. 4. “Tan ‘oo’ Tetch” (Baby McKee), g-vg. 5. “Wow-ow!” (Baby Kelly), vg+. Grades describe the appearance of the front. The Fauntleroy, Anson and McKee cards have advertising on their backs; the two others are blank. All five have stains on the back from having resided in an album or scrapbook. All type is fully present. The Fauntleroy card has a sticker in the upper left corner on the back; the graphics are not affected.

Lot 151.  1880s H804-2A “Brownies Series” Set of 5 Baseball Trade Cards. The brownies in these cards wear pointed hats; “B344” is in the lower left. The titles are “A ‘Panic-er!’ vg; “Judgment!”(slightly trimmed; otherwise) vg+; “Out on second!” f-g; “Putting on the ‘Curve’.” (slightly trimmed; otherwise) vg; and “Taking a Fly” f. “Judgment!” and “Putting on the ‘Curve’.” are slightly trimmed, apparently as issued, to 2 7/8” x 4 7/8”; a white border surrounds the image area. Both cards contain advertising for Marshall & Ball. All of the backs contain advertising. “Out on second!” has stains on the back. The backs of the other cards generally are clean and free of damage.

Lot 152.  2 Scarce 1880s “Brownies Series” Baseball Cards – Oversized Version and Flat Cap. Both varieties are less common than the H804-2A issues. The H804-2B large card – titled “Judgment!” – is 4.5” x 6.5” and has “B345” in the lower left. The back is blank and shows evidence of life in a scrapbook. The front grades g. The Flat Cap card, designated H804-2C,” replicates “A ‘Panic-er!’’ except that the brownies wear flat caps, instead of caps with points, and the trees and grandstand are missing from the background. There is not title, and the card is approximately 3 1/8” x 4 5/8” as issued. It has advertising on the back. Vg+.

Lot 153.  Set of 4 Buffords Sons 1888 H804-3 Baseball Trade Cards, 2 Graded VG-Ex or Better by PSA. Each of these cards presents a baseball scene – 1. “A brush with the ball” (staining on the back; otherwise) ex. 2. “A short stop” f-g. 3. “Chance for a kick,” graded Very Good-Excellent+ 4.5. And 4. “The Umpires lot not a happy one,” PSA-graded Very Good-Excellent 4. Each has advertising for the A&P grocery store on the back. The two that have not been graded by PSA show evidence of having come from a scrapbook. All type is present and readable.

Lot 154.  1880s H804-5A “Black Players Series” Trade Card – “F-O-U-L BALL.” From a set of four, this card displays blue, tan and black colors and “144” in the lower right. The back has light-to-moderate stains and minor paper separation. F-g.

Lot 155.  1880s H804-5B “Black Players Series” Trade Card – “Home Run.” This sepia card, from a set of three, is lightly stained on the back. The front grades ex-m.

Lot 156.  1878 H804-6 Forbes Co. Set of 6 Trade Cards. These six cards – “A Fly,” vg+; “Foul,” ex+; “Home Run,” vg-ex; “Judgment,” f-g; “Muff” ex+ and “Twist” ex-m – have the titles in a reddish-brown color, which apparently is scarcer than the version with the titles in black. All have blank backs with light or moderate stains, except for “Judgment,” which has scrapbook residue. These cards have minor size variations – as issued, and typical. The grades above describe the fronts.

Lot 157.  3 Scarce 1878 H804-6 Forbes Co. Trade Cards – Without Titles. This set was offered with titles in black or reddish-brown – and without. These three no-title cards, from a set of six, are “Foul” (slightly miscut or trimmed; otherwise) ex+, “Judgment” ex+ and “Twist” ex+. The images on these cards are somewhat sharper than on the titled cards. All three cards have blank backs with light stains. The grades describe the fronts.

Lot 158.  1880s H804-10 “Corner Clefs” Near Set – 7 of 8 Cards. Strong near set. Each card has what resembles a G clef in the lower corners. Titles are “A Fly,” ex; “A Heavy Hit,” p; “A Short-Stop,” ex-m; “A Twister,” ex+; “Our Side Has Won,” ex-m; “Score One” vg+ and “The Umpire” ex-m. “Hold Your Base!” is the missing card. Except for “A Heavy Hit,” which is toned and has writing on it, these cards have unusually clean blank backs.

Lot 159.  1880s H804-14 “Big White Shoes” Set of 9 Baseball Trade Cards. These humorous cards features players with skinny arms and legs, oversized shoes and striped shirts and hats. “The Umpire” is one of the more interesting trade card baseball figures. The backs are blank and show no signs of originating in a scrapbook. The cards grade vg+ overall.

Lot 160.  1880s H804-15A “Red Border Position Series” Partial Set – 7 of 9 Cards. These multi-color cards are framed in red and have a white border and a “9.” in the lower right. Positions present are the Pitcher p-f, Catcher f-g, Left Field (significantly trimmed to 2.7” x 3.5” from almost 3” x 4.5”) p, Centre Field f-g, Right Field f, Batsman vg and Umpire f. Third Base, Short Stop and Champion Spurter are missing. The Pitcher and Centre Field cards have blank backs; the other backs display advertising. The Right Field, Batsman and Umpire cards have backs that don’t seem to have been in a scrapbook. The front of the Right Field card has a glossy finish.

Lot 161.  1880s H804-17 “Bluish-Green Series” Partial Set – 5 of 9 Cards. The five cards are “A curver” and “Foul and out,” vg; “Great Expectations,” g; “Hold your base!” p-f and “Send em in!” g. The players in these cards have large heads and striped caps; “313” is in the lower right. “A curver” is very slightly trimmed at the bottom and has a rubber stamp for a shoe store on the front p. Two cards sport advertising on their backs, two are blank-backed and another that otherwise has a blank bank presents a rubber stamp ad, “Smoke the Hatchet Cigar.”

Lot 162.  3 Circa 1890 H804-19 “Horizontal Brownies Series” Trade Cards by Palmer Cox. From a set of six, these titles are “Home Run” vg+, “Safe Hit” g-vg and “2 Strikes” g. Each card has “R851” along the right border. Advertising promotes a business in Worcester, MA, and a dentist in Providence. The backs are blank and free of evidence of a connection with a scrapbook.

Lot 163.  17 19th Century Baseball Trade Cards – Many Scarce, 17 Untitled. The titled card is “Tan ‘oo Tech,” Baby McKee, from the 1889 H804-1B Tobin Litho set. Blank back with damage, f front. The 17 other cards are not part of a set, and they are untitled. To identify them, we have used Frank Keetz’ numbering system from his “Baseball Advertising Trade Cards,” Third Edition, 2011. 2. #206: Game, five players and an umpire; flowers, a ball and crossed bats at the left, “22.” Ad back with damage, p card. 3. #207: Young boy with bat, blue and orange colors, 3” x 5”. Ad back with damage, p card. 4. #208: Pigs playing baseball. Stains on the ad back, g. 5. #210: Nicely dressed boy ready to hit a ball that is in the upper right; “B359.” Blank back, scrapbook residue, g-vg front. 6. #211: Very attractive card with game action in the center; a catcher’s mask, a base and two balls in the lower right; and two bats, a cap and “R813.” No evidence of residence in a scrapbook. Vg. 7. #212: Buffords Litho, “626,” apparently a girl with a dress hat. Blank back, glue stains, 3 5/16” x 6 9/16” g. 8. #213: Three brownies carrying bats, one wearing a catcher’s mask; “H717.” P. 9. #214: Player with a jockey-style cap, “B” on his uniform. A watch is in the scene p-f. 10-14. #215: 1881, Tobin Litho, game action, dog and flag in the scene. These cards are 1 13/16” x 3 1/8” and have blank backs. Three have advertising, all different, on the front. On the back one card has writing, three are stained and one has scrapbook residue. The fronts average vg-ex to ex. 15. #216: Batter ready to hit ball, catcher, three observers. 1886 calendar on the back. Shober & Carqueville Litho. Ad for McLaughlin’s Coffee on the front. G. 16. #222: 16 brownies playing baseball; a pea pod is in the scene. Blank back. Vg. 17. #232: Smiling brownie-like figure holding a yellow bat. Additions were made to the back to use the card as a Valentine. F without the additions considered.
