Baseball Cards   44 Lots       »

Lot 60.  3 Baseball Cards from the 1889 N165 Goodwin “Games & Sports Scenes” Set. Four cards with a baseball theme are in the set. This group includes Base Ball Catcher ex+ and Base Ball Fielder, light pencil writing on the back; otherwise vg-ex. Base Ball Pitcher is on thin paper, without a back. It may have been cut from a sheet or advertisement, and it is sold as is. In its current state it grades g-vg. The two other cards are very collectible examples.
Winning Bid $332.

Lot 61.  1900 T203 Mayo’s Baseball Comics Set of 25. Delightful novelty set that takes a humorous, punny look at the National Game. Twenty-two cards in this set have Mayo’s Cut Plug backs. Three have Winner’s Cut Plug backs: “A Star Catcher,” “Out” and “Stealing Home.” All of the backs are free of damage. Fifteen cards grade vg or vg-ex. Vg-ex: 5 cards. Vg: 10. G-vg: 1. G: 5. F-g: 1. F: 2. P-f: 1.
Winning Bid $700.

Lot 62.  Circa 1905-09 PC792 Set of 6 Embossed Baseball Postcards. Sometimes referred to as “Gold Embossed Postcards,” these cards each have an eagle on their divided backs. They are untitled. Here is what they show: 1. Batter ready or starting to swing ex+ to ex-m. 2. Batter and catcher with another player in the background ex+. 3. Batter, catcher and umpire with a player and packed stands in the background ex+. 4. Player holding a ball at face level g-vg. 5. Fielder leaping for a ball ex+. 6. Fielder above a base with a ball in his glove as a runner slides into the base ex-m+. Very nice set. All of the cards have divided backs and are unused.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 63.  1908 PC800 Pittsburgh Pirates Vignette Fred Clarke Postcard SGC-Graded Authentic. The card has a message and a 1908 postmark on the back. At one time, “Clarke Mgr Pgh” was written on the front in pencil and then erased. Impressions from these entries can been seen when the card is held at a certain angle to light. Otherwise, the front of the card has a clean vg-ex appearance. These cards are extremely scarce in any condition. We’ve seen examples graded vg-ex that didn’t look nearly as good as this one.
Winning Bid $180.

Lot 64.  1909 E92 Croft’s Candy Card of HoFer Sam Crawford. This card has a clean, black Croft’s Candy (Croft and Allen Co.) back. Vg+.
Winning Bid $222.

Lot 65.  1910 Pittsburgh Gazette Times Wagner Postcard and a 1908 Team PC with Wagner. In this sepia postcard, Honus Wagner is described as “the World’s Greatest Base Ball Player.” Around his image, the card presents landmarks from his hometown of Carnegie, PA. On the back, the card has two very small areas of paper loss and a light stain. The front is vg. The 1908 card has vignette photos of 12 players from “Pittsburg’s Great Baseball Team.” Wagner is pictured at the center with another future member of the Hall of Fame, Fred Clarke. G. The two cards are matted and framed for display to 8.75” x 10.75”.
Winning Bid $520.

Lot 66.  1912 PC766 Robert Robinson Baseball Postcard – Batter in Bunting Stance. An illustrator for the “Saturday Evening Post,” Robinson created a set of beautiful baseball postcards, including this example of a batter. The card, which is numbered 209 on the back, was copyrighted by Edward Gross of New York and Curtis Publishing. A clean, bright unused postcard. Ex+.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 67.  Joe Jackson Scarce Sept. 13, 1913 M113 “Police Gazette” Supplement. From 1901-17, the men’s magazine included a large supplement of an athlete, actress or model in each weekly issue. Jackson is the subject of a supplement numbered 1883. Under a full-length portrait of the star outfielder, the tabloid reports that the “Fleet-footed and Heavy-hitting Right Fielder of the Cleveland (American League) Tem is at His Best This Season. “ The content of the caption is arguable. Yes, Jackson concluded the season with a .373 batting average. But that was 22 points lower than his 1912 average, and 35 below his 1911 average of .408. This 11.25” x 16” supplement has been laminated with a note on the blank back that says “Compliments of Alongi’s,” apparently the Italian restaurant in Du Quoin, IL. In addition, the laminated back has scrapbook residue on it. The left border is somewhat uneven toward the bottom, and there is a small chip in the upper right corner. Here is a potential opportunity to own a great image of Jackson at a reasonable price.
Winning Bid $248.

Lot 68.  Rare 1916-20 W-Unc “Big Head” Strip Card of Hinie Grom (Heine Groh). A .292 career hitter, Groh was the top third baseman of the dead ball era. The card, which has somewhat irregular left and right borders, measures 1 7/16” x 2 3/8”. Vg+ appearance.
Winning Bid $85.

Lot 69.  1931 Wheaties (Series 1) Mickey Cochrane – Scarce White Hat Variation. Clean card without the decorative frame and measuring 5” x 5 ½”. The borders are very slightly uneven. Vg.
Minimum Bid $50.

Lot 70.  1933 Goudey #119 Rogers Hornsby. This attractive card is free of creases. Corner wear dictates the grade. Vg+.
Winning Bid $125.

Lot 71.  13 1933 R319 Goudeys – 6 HoFers – Vance, Dickey, Cronin, Goslin, Hornsby and Wilson. All different, with #2 Vance g, 5 Babe Herman vg-ex, 19 Dickey f, 43 Fonseca (scrapbook residue on back; almost all type is present and readable) f, 61 Bishop vg-ex, 63 Cronin g, 124 Whitehill vg+, 167 Russell (“Chicago N.L.” added to back; otherwise) vg-ex, 168 Goslin vg-ex, 179 Leach (“TR” added to back; otherwise) vg-ex, 188 Hornsby g, 206 Suhr vg and 211 Wilson g.
Winning Bid $182.

Lot 72.  1937 Wheaties Series 14 Arky Vaughan and 1938 Series 10 Paul Waner. The panel of Vaughan was neatly cut from the box and is vg-ex. The Waner panel, #15, has been turned into a die-cut, with the background removed. As trimmed, it has an f-g appearance.
Winning Bid $50.
