Lot 9.  Billy Conn Autograph Authenticated by JSA and Keating on an 8” x 10” B&W Photo. Mint 9 signature on a photo showing the Hall of Fame boxer at a Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Probably best known for almost defeating Joe Louis in a 1941 heavyweight championship fight, Conn held the light heavyweight title from 1939-41. Later he starred in a movie about himself called “The Pittsburgh Kid.” This bold autograph and photo showing Conn as a young man come with a JSA Basic Cert. The photo has several creases on Conn’s image. Kevin Keating has also authenticated the signature. Conn passed away in 1993.

Lot 277.  13 Boxing Cards from the 1910 T218 Champion Athletes and Prizefighters Set. This group includes most of the Hall of Fame members from the T218 prizefighter subset: Attell (writing in pencil on the back; otherwise) g, Donahoe vg-ex, Driscoll vg, Gans g-vg, Jack Goodman g, Jeffries (portrait) vg, Jeffries (boxing) g-vg, Johnson (side view, green background) g-vg, Ketchell vg-ex, Kaufman vg, O’Brien vg, O’Keefe vg and Stone vg-ex. Four cards have Hassan backs, while the others have Mecca backs.

Lot 278.  1925 W529-1 Boxing Set of 10 Cards Including Jack Dempsey and a W529-6 Card. The set consists of #1 Dundee f (uneven right border), 2 Carpentier p, 3 O’Dowd (chipped upper right corner; otherwise) g-vg, 4 Beckett (trimmed to 1 ¼” x 2 3/8”) vg appearance as trimmed, 5 Tendler p, 6 Fulton g-vg, 7 Benny Leonard p+, 8 Britton (writing on back) f-g front, 9 Dempsey p-f and 10 Kilbane g+. Carpentier is the subject of the W529-6 card, which is trimmed to 1 ¼” x 2 3/8. As trimmed, it has a g appearance.

Lot 279.  11 1951 Topps Ringside Boxing Cards Including Corbett. The cards are #52 vg, 53 Rocca vg, 59 Corbett vg, 66 g+ to vg, 70 (2) one g-vg and one vg, 78 Zivic (2) one f and one g, 80 vg+, 82 f+ and 84 g+ to vg.

Lot 280.  Dave Anderson Signed “In the Corner: Great Boxing Trainers Talk About Their Art.” Nm-m 8 title page personalized autograph by Anderson, Pulitzer Prize winning sports writer. Red Smith is the only other writer to win the award for sports commentary. From 1966-2007, Anderson was the sports columnist at the “New York Times.” In this book, he provides an inside look at boxing from the perspective of such trainers as Angelo Dundee, Ray Arcel and Eddie Futch. A stated first edition hardback, it is ex-m in a similar dust jacket. It is relatively scarce, and the value of this copy is enhanced by the autograph of one of the best sports writers ever. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 281.  “Don Dunphy at Ringside” Autographed First Edition Book. Dunphy was one of boxing’s most recognizable voices. During his career, he broadcast more than 2,000 fights. For his excellence, he was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class, the National Radio Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In his book, he describes his career in boxing and provides details from many fights, including the Joe Louis-Billy Conn championship bout. His signature, dated 3/8/93, follows a lengthy personalized inscription on the first title page. Authenticated by Kevin Keating, the autograph is mint 9. The 1988 stated first edition hardback is ex-m, and the dust jacket, vg+ to ex. Dunphy passed away in 1998 a couple of weeks after his 90th birthday.

Lot 282.  José Torres, Hall of Fame Boxer, Signed Copy of Mike Tyson’s Biography. Torres also wrote a biography of Muhammad Ali. Light heavyweight champion from 1965-66, he also served as chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission from 1983-88 and president of the World Boxing Organization from 1993-95. He passed away in 2009. Torres’ book on Tyson is titled “Fire & Fear: The Inside Story of Mike Tyson.” He signed the dedication page of the 1989 apparent first edition hardback. His personalized signature is huge, mint 9 and authenticated by Kevin Keating. The book and dust jacket are ex.

Lot 283.  14 Boxing Autographs – Teddy Atlas, Lou Nova (HoF), Sugar De Leon, Etc. All are on lined index cards unless otherwise noted. For a time, Atlas helped Cus D’Amato to train Mike Tyson. His greatest success as a trainer came with Michael Moorer. He currently serves as a boxing commentator with ESPN. A member of the Boxing Hall of Fame, Nova (died 1991) was a heavyweight contender who twice defeated Max Baer and unsuccessfully took on Joe Louis and Tony Galento. Carlos “Sugar” de Leon won and lost the cruiserweight title on several occasions. The other autographs are by Terrence Alli (2), Jimmy Burgess, Aaron Davis, Kenny Mitchell (1990 WBO super bantamweight champ), Domenico Monaco, Leon Cat Taylor and Harold Weston. Taylor had a promising career ruined by drugs; he now is a trainer. Three autographs are unidentified. The signatures of Nova, Mitchell and Weston are on unlined cards; the others are on the lined side. They average nm-m 8. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 284.  Scarce Oversized Program for the 1990 Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas Title Fight. Ex-m 11.75” x 16.5” color 32-page Japanese-English program. In what “Ring Magazine” called the upset of the year, Douglas knocked Tyson out in the 12th round of their bout at the Tokyo Dome on Feb. 11.

Lot 285.  2 Vintage Jack Dempsey Photographs and 4 More Recent Images. In a 6.5” x 8.25” original newspaper photo from 1925, Dempsey boxes Lee Moore in an exhibition in Los Angeles before members of the U.S. Fleet. Vg-ex, editing and cropping marks. An older 8” x 10” studio photo has the heavyweight champion in a boxing pose; the photo is partially adhered to a backing and has a stamped autograph. Vg to vg-ex. Dempsey is also portrayed in two different 8.5” x 11” photos printed recently from original negatives and in two drawings the same, one 8.5” x 11 on copier paper, and the other, 4” x 6” on glossy photo stock. A collection of Dempsey images excellent for display!

Lot 286.  2 Boxing Books by Nat Fleischer and 1927 and 1927 “Everlast Boxing Record” Books. The books by the great boxing writer are “Training for Boxers,” 1937, and “How to Box,” 1949. Jack Dempsey wrote the foreword to the first book, and James J. Corbett, the second. Both books are softcovers, and both are vg. The cover of “Training for Boxers” is detached. The front cover of the 1925 “Boxing Record” is detached, and the back cover is missing. The pages are vg-ex. The 1927 issue is intact and vg with covers that grade lower.
