The Bert Sugar Collection   3 Lots

Lot 237.  Oversized 1940s-50 Photo of HoF Pitcher Herb Pennock from Yankee Stadium. This large photo, formerly displayed in Yankee Stadium, shows Herb Pennock, regarded by Yankees manager Miller Huggins as baseball's best left-handed pitcher ever. He said that "If you were to cut that bird's head open, the weakness of every batter in the league would fall out." Pennock's accomplishments include a career record of 241-162, two 20-game seasons and 19 victories for the 1927 Yankees. He won five World Series games, including a three-hit shutout in 1927, without a loss. Later, as general managers of the Phillies, he assembled most of the players who ultimately won the 1950 N.L. pennant as the "Whiz Kids." Pennock was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1948, the year that he passed away. The 39.5” x 61.5” photo on paper ¼” thick was displayed in Yankee Stadium into the 1970s. It has a damaged upper right corner away from Pennock's image, and there is water damage extending 18” up from the bottom. Professional restoration would return this photo to an attention-grabbing display. It comes with a letter of authenticity signed by Mrs. Sugar confirming that it is from the Bert Randolph Sugar collection. Note: Depending on location, shipping for this item will be $100-$175. We offered it in a previous auction. The winning bid reneged and is banned from bidding with us.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 238.  Clark Griffith Oversized 1940s-50s Photo Formerly Displayed in Yankee Stadium. Griffith was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946 as a pioneer and executive. As a major league pitcher from 1891-1914, he posted a 237-146 record. As a manager, he led the Chicago White Sox to the league championship in the first season of the American League. And as the owner of the Washington Senators, he was one of baseball’s major power brokers. His 39.25" x 61.25" photo, as manager of the Senators, was displayed at Yankee Stadium from the 1940s-50s until the early 1970s. On paper ¼” thick, it has water damage along the edges and in the corners. Except for his shoes, Griffith’s image is unaffected. Some basic restoration would make the photo a very desirable and collectible display item. Note: Depending on location, shipping for this item will be $100-$175. We offered it in a previous auction. The winning bid reneged and is banned from bidding with us.
Winning Bid $75.
