Baseball Memorabilia   40 Lots       »

Lot 335.  Bruce Stark Images of Robinson, Reese, Durocher and Ebbets Field – and a Clock. As a staff artist for New York’s “Daily News,” Stark’s specialty was caricatures and cartoons, but he created realistic artwork as well. Offered here is 17” x 19” artwork that serves as a backdrop for a modern battery operated clock. Stark provides impressive images of Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese and Leo Durocher. The white of their uniforms shows some even yellowing. This display may have been produced using a decoupage process. It is attractive and ex-m. The clock is not working but could easily be replaced.
Winning Bid $204.

Lot 336.  1911 “Home Run Bill” Baseball Sheet Music. Jerome Shay wrote the music and Alfred Bryan, the lyrics, to this humorous and entertaining celebration of the National Game. The subject of the music is “Bill Johnson” who was “a swatter on a Bush League nine, Way down South in Caroline.” The cover artwork is by one of Starmer brothers, William or Frederick, who are widely recognized among sheet music collectors. The six pages of sheet music have been taped along the spine on the inside. The front cover displays a music store stamp, a few small edge tears and two places where pencil writing has been erased. Vg-ex.
Minimum Bid $40.

Lot 337.  Early 1900s Newspaper Pages with Jim Thorpe, Johnny Evers and the Philadelphia A’s. After winning both the pentathlon and decathlon at the Olympics in Sweden, Thorpe is pictured as “the World’s Greatest All Around Athlete” on a page from the July 20, 1912 “Nashville Banner.” Vg-ex. A page from the “Banner’s” Feb. 11, 1914 edition covers the firing of Evers as Chicago Cubs manager by C. W. Murphy, the team president. The page also contains the 1914 National League schedule. Vg-ex. Led by Connie Mack, the Philadelphia Athletics are pictured as “World Champs” in the Oct. 9, 1930 “Daily Times” from Beaver, PA. F.
Minimum Bid $25.

Lot 338.  1919 New York Sporting Goods Company Spring & Summer Catalog. From Schoverling, Daly & Gales, this 168-page catalog devotes 19 pages to baseball equipment, 13 to tennis and 10 to golf. It also offers bicycles, roller skates, camping gear and equipment for other sports and outdoors activities. Among the highlights are drawings of Louisville Slugger decal bats for Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Home Run Baker. The catalog has a stain in the upper outside corner that affects the front cover and approximately one-half of the pages; otherwise, it is vg-ex.
Winning Bid $25.

Lot 339.  “Babe Ruth’s Baseball Book for 1932.” Scarce magazine-format softcover in which Ruth presents 23 lessons on playing baseball and predicts the outcome of the 1932 season. He was correct in predicting that the Yankees would win the A.L. pennant. John McGraw offers 10 “Big Plays of the Last World Series.” And members of the 1931 world champion St. Louis Cardinals, including Jim Bottomley and Frank Frisch, provide advice on how to play each baseball position. Christy Walsh’s organization put together this 98-page special, which is extensively illustrated with excellent sepia photos of Ruth and other stars. Vg copy that shows use, but not abuse. The pages are ex.
Winning Bid $50.

Lot 340.  2 Newspaper Pages with the Babe’s Salary Info, 2 “Illustrated Current News” Posters. Ruth is pictured on two “Atlanta Constitution” pages, one from 1932 and the other, from 1934. On a page from Jan. 15, 1932, Ruth is said to be “indignant” because the Yankees offered him only $70,000 for the upcoming season. That was $10,000 less than what he made in 1931, when he hit only 46 home runs and batted .373. By 1934, Ruth has agreed to have his salary cut from $52,000 in 1933 to $35,000. The 1934 paper has a 6” x 6.5” picture of Ruth. It has a tear at the top; otherwise, the newspapers are vg+ to ex. The 12.5” x 19” “Illustrated Current News” posters are from 1947 and 1948. In the earlier poster, Ruth is shown leaving a hospital, where he spent three months recovering from cancer surgery; a nurse accompanies him. In the later poster, Ruth is at the Giants-Dodgers opening game at the Polo Grounds. This poster also shows President Truman throwing out the first ball at the Senators-Yankees game and Connie Mack and Joe McCarthy at the opening Athletics-Red Sox game. Both posters have vertical folds. Otherwise, the 1947 poster is vg-ex, and the 1948, vg with border stains or tears.
Minimum Bid $40.

Winning Bid $50.

Lot 342.  Circa 1940s Washington Nationals (Senators) Logo Decal from Nat-Lac. This 3.75” x 4.75” decal displays a logo used by the American League team from 1936-47. Created by Nat-Lac Dual Service Decals, its shows stains on the back that are not evident on the front. Vg-ex.
Winning Bid $12.

Lot 343.  2 1947 New York Yankees Programs and 4 Ticket Stubs (Rain Checks). One program is scored for a 12-4 Yankees victory against the Chicago White Sox. Allie Reynolds pitched for New York, and Joe DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto are in the printed lineup. The two rain checks for Game 44 are taped to the front of the program; otherwise, vg+. The other program is for an Aug. 1 game that the Yankees lost to Cleveland, 4-3. Stars in the printed lineups include DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Rizzuto, Lou Boudreau and Joe Gordon. The pages of the program are in decent condition, but they are separated from each other. Again, the rain checks, for Game 50, are taped to the front. Each program contains 16 pages, including the covers.
Winning Bid $30.

Lot 344.  2 Copies of the 1949 Comic “The Pride of the Yankees: The Life of Lou Gehrig.” This comic devotes 25 pages to Gehrig’s life. Both copies are vg+; one has the owner’s name on the first inside page.
Winning Bid $61.

Lot 345.  DiMaggio, Gehrig and Roy “Lefty” Mackey Hillerich & Bradsby 1940s-50s Mini Bats. All are “40” models. The gold stampings on the Joe DiMaggio bat remain strong; ex-m. The stampings on the Lou Gehrig and Mackey bats are somewhat light but readable; both bats show wear on the end of the barrel. The Mackey bat is unusual because he spent his entire 11-season career (1931-41) in the minors, primarily at the Class C and D level. He did play part of the 1935 season with Class A Milwaukee of the American Association.
Winning Bid $50.

Lot 346.  2 Baseball Games – 1940s-50s “Electric Baseball” and 1953 “Line Drives.” The Jim Prentice “Electric Baseball” game has seen good use and no longer works. The box is complete, with creases on the lid and tears in the side panels.

Issue No. 4, offered here, is condition-challenged. One-fourth of the front cover and all of the back cover are missing. Otherwise the comic is complete, except for a large corner chip on the first page. All of the text is present. A 1951 comic titled “Eddie Stanky, Baseball Hero” is missing the covers; the interior is complete and consistent with a vg-fine copy. The earliest comic, issued by Spalding in conjunction with Major League Baseball, is titled “Circling the Bases.” Snuffy Stirnweiss of the Yankees and George Case and George Myatt of the Senators are pictured inside this 1947 comic, which provides tips on playing baseball. Vg to vg+. Stan Musial is featured in a Wheaties ad on the back of Dell’s Oct. 1952 “Lone Ranger” No. 52 book, vg-fine, and Johnny Bench, in a Hillerich & Bradsby ad on the back of “Man from Atlantis” No. 4 from 1976, very fine.
