He added “HOF 74.” Brees, the New Orleans quarterback and MVP of Super Bowl XLIV, is a Ford fan and signed several baseballs for him. This is one of them. Brees’ sweet spot signature is mint 9. Lot 302. 1950 New York Yankees Yearbook – the Team’s First! This 64-page “Sketch Book” pays tribute to the 1949 world championship team and such Yankees heroes as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. The covers are split approximately half way along the spine but remain attached to the pages; their appearance is vg. The interior is intact and ex.

Lot 306. DiMaggio, Gehrig and Roy “Lefty” Mackey Hillerich & Bradsby 1940s-50s Mini Bats. All are “40” models. The gold stampings on the Joe DiMaggio bat remain strong; ex-m. The stampings on the Lou Gehrig and Mackey bats are somewhat light but readable; both bats show wear on the end of the barrel. The Mackey bat is unusual because he spent his entire 11-season career (1931-41) in the minors, primarily at the Class C and D level. He did play part of the 1935 season with Class A Milwaukee of the American Association.

Lot 307. May 26, 1936 Sepia 11” x 14” Photo of Rookies Joe DiMaggio and Billy Sullivan. A product of the Photocraft Co. of New Haven, the glossy photo presents an action shot of each rookie. An accompanying caption notes that Sullivan was batting .433 and DiMaggio’s “batting and fielding with the New York Yankees has been sensational so far this season.” DiMaggio finished the season as an All-Star with a .323 batting average; he placed eighth in the league’s MVP voting. How Sullivan was considered a rookie is unclear. By 1936, he had already made 1,036 official at bats, including 363 in 1931. For 1936, he batted .351 in 339 plate appearances. The photo has scuffs along the top edge, one about 0.5” long near DiMaggio’s glove and a 0.75” tear below Sullivan. The photo displays impressively.

Lot 308. 1938 Advertisement with Babe Ruth Receiving a Louisville Slugger Sterling Silver Bat. In a 9.5” x 15” newspaper ad, Ruth receives the bat as “a token of his hitting prowess” at the annual New York Chapter of Sportswriters’ Dinner. The ad lists Ruth’s home run total as 729, which includes the 15 he belted in World Series competition. The ad has a couple of creases away from Ruth’s image, and it’s matted to 16” x 20”.

Lot 309. Babe Ruth Newspaper Pages with Salary Information, “Illustrated Current News” Posters. Ruth is pictured on two “Atlanta Constitution” pages, one from 1932 and the other, from 1934. On a page from Jan. 15, 1932, Ruth is said to be “indignant” because the Yankees offered him only $70,000 for the upcoming season. That was $10,000 less than what he made in 1931, when he hit only 46 home runs and batted .373. By 1934, Ruth has agreed to have his salary cut from $52,000 in 1933 to $35,000. The 1934 paper has a 6” x 6.5” picture of Ruth. It has a tear at the top; otherwise, the newspapers are vg+ to ex. The 12.5” x 19” “Illustrated Current News” posters are from 1947 and 1948. In the earlier poster, Ruth is shown leaving a hospital, where he spent three months recovering from cancer surgery; a nurse accompanies him. In the later poster, Ruth is at the Giants-Dodgers opening game at the Polo Grounds. This poster also shows President Truman throwing out the first ball at the Senators-Yankees game and Connie Mack and Joe McCarthy at the opening Athletics-Red Sox game. Both posters have vertical folds. Otherwise, the 1947 poster is vg-ex, and the 1948, vg with border stains or tears.

Lot 310. “Life,” “Sports Illustrated,” “Sport” and Other Publications with Mickey Mantle Covers. Mantle is on the cover of two “Life” issues, June 25, 1956, vg-ex, and July 30, 1965, g-vg. Two “Boy’s Life” magazines also have his image, Aug. 1959, g+ to vg, and June 1969, with his son, ex. The “SI” covers are from May 8, 1967, ex, and 1997, “Classic Pictures” issue, nm. Mantle made the covers of “Sport” on March 1957 vg-ex, May 1962 (with Maris and others) ex, July 1962 vg+, Oct. 1963 ex+, Sept. 1964 vg-ex and April 1969 vg-ex. Mantle is featured also on the cover of the July-Sept. 1959 issue of “Who’s Who in the Big Leagues” from Dell and the 1972 softcover book “How to Star in Baseball” by Herman Masin, vg-ex. This collection also includes Mantle in two advertisements. Both are two-page magazine spreads from “Boy’s Life,” one dated June 1957 and the other, March 1966. The two pages of the earlier ad are separated. This collection of 16 items includes outstanding photos of the Yankees’ star.

The 12.5” x 19” b&w photo composite shows Mantle with New York Yankees general manager Lee McPhail and president Mike Burke. Dated March 4, 1968, the photo has the two usual folds and otherwise is ex. The contract was Mantle’s sixth for $100,000. He retired after the 1968 season…

Lot 318. Ticket Stub for 1942 World Series Game 3 – St. Louis vs. New York at Yankee Stadium. Ernie White pitched a five-hitter as the Cardinals won, 2-0, and took the lead in the series, 2-1. The Cardinals captured the world championship in five games. The stub, for a mezzanine reserved seat, is vg to vg-ex with a crease in the upper left, a small corner crease and paper loss on the back along the edge where it was separated from the rest of the ticket.
