Lot 348.  1946 Press Association Photo of Pittsburgh Pirates’ Manager Frankie Frisch. The July 26 photo shows Frisch arguing with umpire George Magerkurth in a game the day before with the Phillies at Shibe Park. After the Pirates booed a call by Magerkurth, the umpired cleared the Pittsburgh dugout of all players not in the lineup. The 7” x 9” photo has an undated caption attached to the back. Pin holes in the upper corners; otherwise, ex.

Lot 350.  Scarce “Pittsburgh Wins 1960 National League Championship” Team Photo Poster. This 12.5” x 19” poster from “Illustrated Current News” pictures the eventual world champions. It has a small edge chip and some edge creases. The image area is ex.

Lot 359.  Babe Ruth 11”x14” Limited Edition Silver Gelatin 1915 Boston Red Sox Image. This museum-quality photo, numbered 337, was hand-printed on acid-free paper from the original glass negative. Ruth won 18 games in 1915 for the Red Sox and batted .315 in the process. The season also included his first major league home run. The photo comes with its “Baseball Antiquities” certificate and is housed in its original book-like folder.

Lot 361.  Late 1920s or 1930 Wire Photo of Cubs President Bill Veeck Sr. and Manager Joe McCarthy. Veeck served as president of the Chicago Cubs from 1919 until his death in 1933, and McCarthy managed the team from 1926-30. McCarthy’s success as a manager earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1957. The 6.5” x 8.5” original photo from Pacific & Atlantic Photos is vg with the lower right corner chipped.

Lot 362.  1931 Photograph of Babe Ruth and Boxers Tony Canzoneri and Kid Berg. Issued by the Elliott Service Co., this composite differs from “Illustrated Current News” issues by being an actual glossy photo. Measuring 11” x 14”, it shows Ruth leaving a Boston hospital and Tony Canzoneri knocking out Jack (Kid) Berg in the third round of their April 24, 1931 bout for the lightweight and light welterweight titles. Technically vg, displays better.

Lot 363.  Original 1937 Sepia Acme Newspictures Wire Photo of Bill Terry and Travis Jackson. In the 7” x 9” photo, Terry, the New York Giants’ manager, congratulates Jackson for being appointed manager of the Jersey City Giants. Terry and Jackson are both in the Hall of Fame as players. Terry was inducted in 1954, and Jackson, in 1982. The photo has creases in each corner. Vg to vg-ex with a clean central image area.

Lot 364.  George Burke 8” x 9.75” Photo of the 1940 Chicago White Sox. Based in Chicago, Burke was one of baseball’s leading photographers. Ted Lyons, Luke Appling, Al Schacht, Monty Stratton, Muddy Ruel and Mule Haas are among the players and coaches pictured. The 1940 team finished in fourth place in the A.L. with an 82-72 record. Ex appearance with a crease in the upper left corner and along the left border.

Lot 365.  1946 “Illustrated Current News” Poster Featuring Babe Ruth and Joe Louis. In this 12.5” x 19” news poster, the baseball and boxing greats discuss politics with New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, who was preparing for his re-election campaign against challenger Sen. James M. Mead. Louis was the heavyweight champion in 1946. The poster is folded vertically and otherwise ex.

Lot 366.  Ted Williams, Joe Cronin and Eddie Collins in a 1946 “Illustrated Current” News Poster. The three Hall of Fame players pose in this 12.5” x 19” news poster to discuss Williams’ contract for 1947, estimated at $60,000-75,000. Collins was the Boston’s general manager, and Cronin, the manager. Vg to vg-ex poster folded vertically.

Lot 367.  1948 Acme Wire Photo of Bill Veeck and Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler. The original 6” x 8” photo shows the baseball executives talking at the April 17 dinner of the Cleveland Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association. Veeck apparently was honored as baseball’s “Man of the Year.” The photo has corner creases. The image area is free of creases, with impressions from writing on the back showing slightly.

Lot 368.  “Boston Wins 1948 National League Title” Poster from “Illustrated Current News.” The 1948 Braves in this team photo challenged Cleveland in the World Series. The 12.5” x 19” poster is folded vertically and otherwise is vg-ex.

Lot 369.  Billy Martin and Vic Raschi in a 1952 World Series Original Wire Photo from UPI. In this Oct. 2 United Press 7” x 9” photo, Raschi pinches Martin’s cheek after the New York Yankees’ 7-1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 2. Raschi pitched a three-hitter, and Martin contributed a three-run homer. The photo has corner creases and another crease in the upper right. The images of Martin and Raschi show a couple of inconsequential creases, and the photo is sharp. The caption is included.

Lot 370.  17 LA Dodgers Vintage Photos Including Wire Photos, a 1961 Manny’s Partial Set, Etc. All of these photos are b&w. Subjects of the two wire photos are Jim Gilliam sliding home against Cincinnati, UPI, 1965, ex+; and Claude Osteen, swarmed by autograph seekers as he joins his hometown Dodgers, UPI, 1965, ex-m+. The wire photos are 7” x 9” with captions. Seven of the 10 Dodgers in the Manny’s team set are present: Drysdale ex+, Koufax ex-m, Larker ex-m+, Moon ex+, Neal ex, Podres vg+ and Sherry ex-m. This collection includes two Dodgers team-issued 8” x 10” photos: Lefty Phillips and Willie Davis, ex-m. Chuck Churn is in a 5” x 7” photo. Three photos show minor leaguers as Dodgers who never made it to the majors: Dan Gatta and Carroll Beringer (each 2.5” x 3.5”) and Allen Norris (3.5” x 5”). Beringer coached in the majors for the LA team. The other photos picture Luis Alcaraz (2.5” x 3.5”) and Larker as a member of the Toei Giants in Japan (2.75” x 4.5”). These smaller photos are ex-m and originate in a minor league collection.

Lot 371.  Goose Goslin in a 1968 Wire Photo the Day After His Election to the Hall of Fame. The 7” x 9” original UPI wire photo captures Goslin at the marina he was running at the time in Bridgeton, NJ. “The Sporting News” ranked Goslin 89th on its list of all-time greatest baseball players in 1999. In 18 major league seasons, he batted .316 and drove in 1,609 runs. The photo is vg+ to ex.
