Golf Autographs and Memorabilia   4 Lots

Lot 130.  14 Boxes of Tommy Armour Silver Scot Golf Balls and a Golf Ball Anthology, 1899-1939. From Tommy John’s collection, 168 Armour golf balls (12 to a box), with the lid of one box autographed by John, an avid and excellent golfer himself. His signature, authenticated by Kevin Keating, is gem mint 10. Still in their original packages, the Silver Scot balls have a large core and 432 dimples, a design that optimizes distance and durability. With the golf balls is “An Anthology of the Golf Ball from original molds dating 1899 to 1939.” Given away at one of John’s Celebrity Golf Classics, the “anthology” consists of 12 replicas of antique golf balls and a modern ball. They are housed in a book-like case and come with a four-page brochure that describes them. Four Rawlings “Official League” golf balls are also included in this group, for total of 185 unused golf balls. Comes with two “Property of” labels signed by John.
Winning Bid $156.

Lot 151.  Mickey Mantle Autographed Golf Ball. Bold mint 9 autograph on a Uniroyal ball that has a Carrier logo. Unusual. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $218.

Lot 216.  Arnold Palmer Autographed “Sports Illustrated” 1961 “Sportsman of the Year” Issue. Large, bold gem mint 10 signature on the cover of the Jan. 9 issue, which is ex-m without a label. Ten pages inside are devoted to Palmer, who contributions to the popularization of golf are incalculable. His superstar status derived from both his ability on the golf course and his charisma. He won the Masters four times, the U.S. Open once and the British Open twice. Only the PGA Championship eluded him; he tied for second three times. In 2000, “Golf Digest” rated him the sixth greatest golfer of all time, and ESPN rated him the 29th greatest athlete of the 20th century. Kevin Keating authenticated the signature, which is among the finest we have seen by Palmer on an “SI” cover.
Winning Bid $198.

Lot 217.  Payne Stewart Autographed Photo. Nm-m 8 to mint 9 signature on a 3.5” x 5” color magazine photo. The 1989 PGA champion and winner twice of the U.S. Open, Stewart was only 42 when he died in a plane crash in 1999. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $102.
