Lot 156.  6 Checks Signed by Robin Roberts (HoF). One of the most successful pitchers in the majors during the 1950s, Roberts was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976. Pitching for the Phillies, something less than an N.L. powerhouse, he won at least 20 games per season from 1950 through 1955, led the league in complete games in each of those seasons and struck out more batters than any other N.L. pitcher in 1953 and 1954. His signature is on six checks written from 1975-79. These signatures are strong, nm-m 8 or better, with most having a bank processing stamp that affects some part of the autograph. One pricing source lists Roberts’ checks at $250 each. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $75.

Three items each have two signatures: an 8” x 10 color photo signed by Roberts and Steve Carlton; Roberts and Curt Simmons on an 8” x 10” b&w photo, and Roberts and Bill Pierce on 1959 Topps card #156. Roberts’ autograph decorates nine cards: Berk Ross 1951 #4-8; Bowman 1950 #32 and 1955 #171; and Topps 1956 #180, 1957 #15, 1958 #90, 1960 #264, 1961 #20 and 1962 #243. Phils teammate Andy Seminick autographed two cards, Berk Ross 1951 #3-7 and 1955 Bowman #93. In addition, Roberts signed a Hall of Fame Gold Plaque Postcard and three different postcards or postcard-sized photos. Five Roberts signatures are on 8” x 10” photos, two color and three b&w. Roberts wears a New York Yankees uniform in one photo. In another, he is pictured with Allie Reynolds before Game 2 of the 1950 World Series. There are no duplicate items in this collection. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Roberts won at least 20 games in six consecutive seasons, and Carlton had four years in which he won at least 20 games. In his best season, Simmons won 17. Autographs of Carlton and Roberts are on a Cliff Spohn 24” x 36” lithograph with dramatic images of both Hall of Fame players. The autograph is strong on a dark background. Southworth died in 1969, almost 39 years before his Hall of Fame induction. Enshrined at Cooperstown as a manger, he led the St. Louis Cardinals to World Championships in 1942 and 1944. In addition, he won two N.L. pennants, with the Cards’ in 1943 and the Boston Braves in 1948. As an outfielder, he batted .297 with the Indians, Pirates, Braves, Giants and Cardinals.

Given to John by Winfield, the hat has a large mint 9 to gem mint 10 Winfield autograph on the underside of the bill, which also has the outfielder’s uniform number, 31, in another ink. The hat shows considerable use, and “NY” is off-white. Rarely does a game cap from a Hall of Famer of Winfield’s era and caliber enter the market with ironclad provenance comparable to that offered here.
