Lot 242.  James Earl Jones and Billy Dee Williams Signed 1976 “Ebony” Magazine. Jones and Williams are pictured on the cover of the July issue with Richard Pryor as members of “The Bingo Long Traveling All Stars & Motor Kings.” Inside, the magazine offers a seven-page article on the movie and carries a two-page ad spread. The book is based on William Brashler’s classic novel with the same title. Brashler’s works include a biography of Josh Gibson and a history of the Negro Leagues. The magazine also devotes seven pages to the Spinners. Williams and Jones are linked also by their “Star Wars” roles. Their autographs, authenticated by Kevin Keating, are mint 9. The issue is vg-ex.

Lot 243.  Hindenburg Disaster Photo Autographed by 5 Zeppelin Crew Members. On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg, LZ129, caught fire and crashed while attempting to dock at the Lakehurst, NJ, Naval Air Station. Thirty-five of the 97 passengers and crew on board were killed. Three crew members who survived the accident signed the 8” x 10” b&w photo: Eugen Bentele, chief mechanic for one of the engines; Alfred Grozinger, a cook, and Al Stoffler, the pastry chef. The photo is signed also by two crew members of other airships, Norbert Heiss, who served on LOZ127, and George Holl, a member of the LZ127 and LZ129 crews. LZ127 was in service from 1928 until it was retired in 1937. The airship completed a “round-the-world” flight supported by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1929. Kevin Keating authenticated the signatures, which are mint 9 and gem mint 10. The three LZ129 signers are deceased.

Lot 244.  Scarce Autograph of Cyrus W. Field – Laid the First Transatlantic Telegraph Cable. Born in Massachusetts in 1819, Field established a paper manufacturing business in New York. Telegraphy soon captured his interest, and with other entrepreneurs, including Samuel F. B. Morse, he created the Atlantic Telegraph Company. In 1858, the company finished laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable, which ran from Newfoundland to Ireland. He died in 1892. His autograph is bold, mint 9 to gem mint 10, on a slightly irregular 4.5” x 5” section of paper. Below his signature, he added “New York.” Kevin Keating authenticated the signature of this important financier and communications pioneer.

Lot 245.  Vintage Fountain Pen Autograph of Gracie Fields, English Actress and Singer. Fields achieved fame in the 1920s-30s as a stage and movie actress and recording artist. During World War II, she lived primarily in the U.S. because her husband, an Italian citizen, would have been interned in England. She continued to perform and record into the 1970s. She died in 1979. Her autograph on an album page that has her image is large and nm-m 8. Kevin Keating authenticated the signature.

Lot 246.  P. D. James Autographed Copy of “Death in Paradise.” The British author signed a book plate that is adhered to the flyleaf. Her signature, authenticated by Kevin Keating, is a 10 of 10. Known as Baroness James of Holland Park, James is a Conservative life peer in England’s House of Lords. The Borzoi 2001 hardback is ex in an ex dust jacket.

Lot 247.  Jim Lovell’s Autograph and the “Life” Story of Apollo 13. Anybody see a resemblance between Lovell and Tom Hanks? Lovell’s photo and a mint 9 to gem mint 10 autograph are on the cover of the April 24, 1970 issue of “Life.” Inside, the magazine recounts “The Joyous Triumph of Apollo 13,” the troubled lunar space flight that became the subject of a 1995 award-winning movie. Eight pages focus of the families of Lovell and his two crew mates, Jack Swigert and Ken Mattingly. The magazine is ex with the mailing label partly removed. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 248.  M. “Nick” McDonald Signed Photo – Captured Kennedy Assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Large, bold signature on a dark background of a 3.75” x 5” photo. Nm-m 8. Kevin Keating provided the authentication. McDonald, who died in 2005, added “Captor of Oswald 11-22-63.” McDonald confronted Oswald in a movie theater that day. In a struggle that followed, Oswald attempted to shoot McDonald, but the officer jammed his hand into the firing mechanism of Oswald’s gun just as the assassin pulled the trigger. Ultimately, McDonald and several other officers subdued Oswald, who had killed another police officer earlier. McDonald joined the Dallas Police Department in 1955 and served for 25 years.

Lot 249.  Audrey Meadows Autographed “Love, Alice: My Life as a Honeymooner.” Large, bold gem mint 10 signature on the third blank page inside. The 1994 stated first edition hardcover covers Meadows’ years as Ralph Kramden’s (Jackie Gleason’s) TV wife on the long-running “Honeymooners” show. Ex book in an ex dust jacket that has a large promotional sticker in the upper right corner of the front cover. It appears that with patience of much Goo Gone, it could be removed. Meadows passed away in 1996. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 250.  1970 Comic Autographed by Noel Neill, Lois Lane in Superman Movies and TV Shows. Neill portrayed the reporter in Superman film serials in 1948 and 1950 and in the “Adventures of Superman” TV series from 1953-58. Her nm 7 signature is on the cover of the Nov. 1970 DC comic, No. 106, “Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 251.  Linus Pauling Autographed Unlined Index Card. Widely recognized as a peace activist and for his promotion of Vitamin C, Pauling was one of the top scientists of the 20th century. A pioneer in quantum chemistry and molecular biology, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. Eight years later, he was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He died in 1994. His signature is large and bold, mint 9. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 252.  9 Photos Signed by Musicians, Singers or Other Entertainers: Fountain, Hornsby, Lee, Etc. The signatures are nm-m 8 or better on black & white photos unless otherwise indicated: Gerald Albright (jazz saxophonist), Ray Anthony (bandleader), Charlie Daniels (country and southern rock singer, fiddler, guitarist), Pete Fountain (jazz clarinetist), BR (Bruce Randall) Hornsby (singer, multiple instruments, songwriter; color photo), Don LaFontaine (voice actor, film trailers; died 2008; color photo), Brenda Lee (singer, 37 chart hits: color photo), Nils Lofgren (rock guitarist, keyboard player, songwriter) and Yanni (new age pianist and composer). These nine autographs come with a Letter of Authenticity from Collectible Classics. They came from a reliable consignor, and we believe them to be authentic. The winning bidder will have 50 days from the close of the auction to have them checked by a reliable third party. After May 11, 2012, they may not be returned.

Lot 253.  Autographs of 4 Hollywood Stars – Myrna Loy, Sammy Kaye and 2 Munsters. Co-star of the “The Thin Man” movies, Loy (died 1993) signed the front of a 1986 check; nm-m 8 signature. An unsigned 8” x 10” b&w photo of Loy accompanies the check. In a nationwide poll in 1937, she was named the “Queen of Hollywood.” Big band leader and TV host Kaye (d. 1987) autographed an 8” x 10” photo that presents his image. Personalized to “Sally,” the signature is nm-m 8 with minor uneven ink coverage on the “K.” The vintage photo has a pin hole in each corner and shows light creases. Signatures of Butch Patrick and Al Lewis (d. 2006) are on an 8” x 10” photo of a Munsters scene. Patrick’s signature is a 10, while Lewis’ minor ink loss and a tiny smudge on “Al.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 254.  “New York Times Mid-Week Pictorial” 1923 “Picture History Portfolio.” Before “Life,” the “Mid-Week Pictorial” was the premier picture publication. Each week, the tabloid-sized periodical offered sepia photos of world and domestic events and sports. Offered here is a hardbound annual of 480 pages published in 1923. The “Portfolio” opens with full-page 11” x 16” portraits of the first 30 U.S. Presidents. The rest covers the world, and it provides a dose of history too. There are sections on natural wonders, celebrated paintings and famous actors and actresses. Plenty of sports coverage is here too, with pictures of Ruth, Cobb, Speaker, Dempsey, Bobby Jones, Tilden and many others. G-vg cover. The pages are brittle, and approximately 60 have significant tears, primarily toward the front. The sports pages are largely intact.
