Lot 141. Jim Brown Autographed Dec. 1968 Issue of “Ebony” Magazine. Brown signed the cover, which has his portrait. He traced over the “J,” and the gold ink he used displays as nm 7 against the background, which has a gold cast. Nine pages inside focus primarily on Brown’s acting career. When “The Sporting News” selected that top 100 football players of all-time, Brown headed the list. At No. 4 on ESPN’s list of top 20th century athletes, Brown was the highest rated football player. Lot 142. “Bullet Bill” Dudley Signed 1998 Ron Mix HoF Platinum Card and a Family Member’s Note. In 2009, our consignor sent Dudley several Swell Football Greats cards to sign. The Hall of Fame halfback passed away on Feb. 4, 2010. Six days later, one of his daughters sent our consignor a handwritten note and the HoF Ron Mix card. She wrote that the card “was in daddy’s office when he passed.” She also thanked him for his $15 contribution to the Bill Dudley Scholarship Foundation. The autograph is mint 9; Kevin Keating authenticated it. We have included the three Swell cards and the daughter’s note. Also included is a package of information sent to our consignor on the passing of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Pat Brady in 2009.

Lot 144. 1947 “Life” Color Cover Signed by Notre Dame Heisman Winner Johnny Lujack. After starring for the Fighting Irish and winning the Heisman Trophy in 1947, Lujack played quarterback and defensive back for the Chicago Bears for four seasons. He signed the Sept. 29, 1947 issue of “Life” in green sharpie, and his signature is a 10. He is in the College Hall of Fame. Prior to the 1950s, “Life” seldom printed color covers. Lot 148. Grantland Rice Autograph. Rice was one of the top sportswriters during the first half of the 20th century. Known for his inspiration prose and heroic writing style, he is perhaps best-remembered for succeeding Walter Camp in selecting college football All-Americans. He also is recognized for dubbing the 1924 Notre Dame backfield the “Four Horsemen.” Rice died in 1954. His fountain pen signature, authenticated by Kevin Keating, is nm 7 to nm-m 8 on a 1” x 3” cut.

Don Shula Autographed Copy of His Book, “Everyone’s a Coach.” Mint 9 signature on the front end-page of the 1995 hardback, subtitled “You Can Inspire Anyone to be a Winner.” The book is nm in a like dust jacket. Shula coached the Baltimore Colts or Miami Dolphins from 1963-95. His teams won 347 games, the most for any coach in NFL history. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 151. Alex Wojciechowicz Autograph on a Knute Rockne First Day Cover. The center on Fordham’s famous Seven Blocks of Granite offensive line, Wojciechowicz subsequently starred as an offensive lineman and linebacker for the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. He died in 1992. His signature is nm-m 8 to mint 9. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Issued by the Exhibit Supply Co., these cards have mint 9 or gem mint 10 signatures by three Hall of Fame players – Sam Baugh, Ollie Matson and Charley Trippi. The fourth card is signed by Charley Conerly, one of the better quarterbacks not in the Hall of Fame. The Baugh card is a green-tint variation; the other cards are black & white. Lot 154. Photos Signed by HoF College Coaches Bobby Bowden and Ara Parseghian, Plus Bo Pelini. The autographs are bold mint 9s or gem mint10s. Bowden personalized his signature on a promotional 8.5” x 11” color photo for a sports bar. The photo has a chip at the top that could be matted out, and a couple of tiny tears away from Bowden’s image. Parseghian signed a 1964 wire photo, 8” x 10” including caption, which shows him looking at a parking ticket in his first season at Notre Dame. Pelini is the Nebraska head coach. George Musso (HoF), 1973 Heisman winner John Cappelletti and Supreme Court Justice White autographed postcards. The Musso and Cappelletti signatures are mint 9; White’s is ex-m 6 to nm 7. Gene Mingo (nm 9, personalized) and Ray Jacobs of Miami (nm-m 8) signed photos 3.5” x 5.5” or larger. Jeff George’s autograph (mint 9) is on the back of a Colts’ Police card, and Emerson Boozer’s, on a lined index card with a personalized note. Hall of Fame members Chuck Bednarik and Billy Shaw autographed a card marking the NFL’s 75th season, and Andy Robustelli and Ace Parker, a informational card from the HoF.
