Lot 1.  Muhammad Ali Autographed Oct. 13, 1980 “Sports Illustrated.” Large mint 9 signature on the cover. In 11 illustrated pages inside, the magazine details his loss to Larry Holmes in his penultimate fight. Holmes scored a technical knockout in the 11th round of the Oct. 2 bout to claim the WBC world heavyweight title. Ali retired for a second time, and permanently, after one more fight. This issue, which is ex-m, marks Ali’s last appearance on an “SI” cover during his career. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph.

Lot 2.  Carmen Basilio Autographed July 1956 “Police Gazette.” A member of the Hall of Fame, Basilio was one of the toughest boxers ever to enter the ring. He twice held the welterweight title in the mid-1950s. In one of the greatest and most brutal matches ever, he wrested the middle- weight crown from Sugar Ray Robinson. His signature is a 10 on the cover of the magazine, which is vg with somewhat brittle paper. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 3.  Gerry Cooney Autographed March 1982 Issue of “Inside Sports.” The issue previews Cooney’s 1982 heavyweight championship bout with Larry Holmes. In the 13th round, Holmes knocked out the challenger from Long Island. After the loss to Holmes, Cooney fought only five times. He retired in 1990 with a 28-3 record; 25 of his wins were by knockout. His autograph is nm-m 8 to mint 9 on the magazine cover, which is ex-m+. Kevin Keating authenticated the signature.

Lot 4.  Archie Moore Autographed Magazine Page with His Image. Bold signature, nm-m 8 to mint 9, personalized and dated 1989. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. The page is about 10” x 14”. The light heavyweight champion form 1952-62, Moore knocked out more of his opponents than any other boxer. In 1955, at the age of 41, he unsuccessfully challenged Rocky Marciano for the heavyweight crown. He was 50 when he retired in 1963. Moore died in 1998.

Lot 5.  7 Signed Boxing Cards – Duran, Whitaker, Canizales, Etc. Hall of Fame multi-weight champion Pernell Whitaker autographed three of the cards, 1991 Ringlords, 1991 All World and 1991 Kayo. One signature is nm 7 to nm-m 8, and the two others, nm-m 8 to mint 9. Roberto Duran (HoF) signed the back of 1995 Signature Rookies Titans card T1; the autograph grades ex 5. Orlando Canizales is a third Hall of Fame signer; his mint 9 autograph is on a 1996 Ringside card. The two other autographs are by Roman Karmazin, mint 9 on a 2008 Topps Co-Signers card, and Yuri Vaulin, ex-m 6 to nm 7 on the back of a 1991 Kayo card, and ex 5 on the front.

Lot 6.  Boxing Wire Photo showing Lou Nova, Jack Blackburn and Joe Louis. Original vg+ photo by a Los Angeles photographer with possible vintage autographs of each below their respective images; however, we believe more likely someone else simply wrote the names as identifiers. Buy it as a great vintage photo!

Includes two panels of two stamps and one of three. Overall, vg+ to ex. 26-27. 1932 Cloetta, Swedish issue, Dempsey f-g and Schmeling (trimmed; otherwise) ex. 28-29. 1958 Heinerle, German issue, Joe Louis p and Sugar Ray Robinson vg. 30. 1960 D. C. Thompson (British) Stars of Sport, Floyd Patterson vg. 31-33. 1969-70 Panini (Italy), including Napoles (HoF) vg. 34-57. 1966-67 Panini, 24 including 17 different, ex-m to nm overall. And 58. 1972 Panini, #338 Frazier ex-m+.

Lot 8.  1938 Churchman “Boxing Personalities” Partial Set with Louis, Dempsey, Johnson, Etc. This group consists of 37 cards from the 50-card set: #1, 2 Armstrong g, 3 Baer g, 4, 5, 7, 9-11, 12 Dempsey vg-ex, 15 Farr vg, 16-19, 20 Johnson g, 21, 23-25, 26 Louis vg+, 27, 29-33, 34 Schmeling vg, 37-39, 42, 44, 45, 47, 48 and 50. The remainder of the set averages vg+.

Lot 9.  31 Different Boxing Cards from 4 1930s Sets – Dempsey, Schmeling, Gains, Etc. Twenty-two cards are from 1938 Churchman “Boxing Personalities” set: #1 Ambers f, 4 Berg p-f, 5, 9, 10, 12 Dempsey g, 15 Farr f-g, 17 Gains p, 18, 21, 23, 24, 27, 30, 34 Schmeling f, 37-39, 42, 47 and 50. The balance of the cards not graded above average g. Five cards originate in Ogden’s “Pugilists in Action” set: #10 g-vg, 33 Paolino g-vg, 39 vg, 44 f-g and 49 vg. Gallaher issued the other cards: 1935 “Champions,” 2nd Series, #6 g, 21 vg-ex, 31 g and 38 Gains vg, and 1936 “Sporting Personalities” #41 Berg f-g.

Lot 10.  3 Vintage Postcards – Jack Dempsey and 2 Jim Jeffries. Jeffries is the subject of a 1907 card titled “On Guard” from the Benham Indian Trading Co. of Los Angeles; back damage, p-f front. Jeffries and his restaurant are pictured in a 1908 Carlin postcard postally used in 1914; g-vg. Dempsey’s New York restaurant, “The Meeting Place of the World,” is depicted on a 1940s postcard; vg+.

Lot 11.  Full Ticket for the “Exclusive Theatre Telecast” of the 1967 Clay (Ali)-Patterson Fight. Scheduled for April 25, the bout was canceled because of Ali’s troubles with the U.S. military. He was out of the ring from March 23, 1967 until Oct. 26, 1970. The ticket has an ex appearance. Close-up, it shows light creases that appear to result from the printing process and ink coverage, rather than rough handling.

Lot 12.  Ticket Stubs for 1944 Jack Vs. Montgomery and 1953 Olson Vs. Young. Bob Montgomery decisioned Beu Jack to regain the world lightweight title on March 3, 1944, and Bobo Olson captured the American middleweight championship by outpointing Paddy Young on June 19, 1953. Both fights were at Madison Square Garden. Both stubs show irregular separations and otherwise are vg-ex.

Lot 103.  Jackie Robinson and Floyd Patterson Civil Rights-Related 1963 Original UPI Wire Photo. The 7.75” x 10” b&w photo captures the Hall of Fame stars boarding a plane in Newark for a flight to Birmingham to “lend moral encouragement” to civil rights demonstrations there. Robinson, of course, broke baseball’s color barrier. At 21 in 1956, Patterson became the youngest heavyweight boxing champion.
