Pittsburgh Pirates   3 Lots

Lot 413.  2 Paul Waner Autographs on His “Batting Secrets” Booklet. When “The Sporting News” published its list of 100 greatest baseball players of the 20th century, it rated Waner ahead of such names as Eddie Mathews, Jim Palmer, Harmon Killebrew, Carl Yastrzemski, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken, Jr. Old-timers who saw both Waner and Roberto Clemente play right field at Forbes Field debate who was better. In his ranking of right fielders, Bill James placed Clemente one spot ahead of Waner. It’s unlikely that anyone ever played the game better drunk than Waner. In 20 major league seasons, 15 with Pittsburgh, he collected 3,152 hits, drove home 1,309 runs and accumulated a career batting average of .334. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1952 and died in 1965. In 1962, he self-published a 34-page booklet of his “Batting Secrets.” The publication is ex. Waner signed above his image on the front cover and on the back cover as well. The front-cover signature is nm-m 8 to mint 9, with minor bleeding on “Paul.” The back-cover autograph is larger, a 10 that could easily be matted and framed. Kevin Keating authenticated both. Waner’s signature is comparatively difficult to obtain.
Winning Bid $240.
