Lot 42.  Gene Autry Signed Letter Supporting Tommy John for a Freedoms Foundation Award. John was nominated for an award in 1984 by the Orange County Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation in recognition of his responsible citizenship and community service. In the Sept. 26, 1984 typed letter on California Angels’ stationery, Autry commends John as “a true gentleman, both on and off the field, a fine family man, and a responsible citizen.” He added that “I think he totally represents a fine upstanding American citizen.” Autry’s signature is a large, bold 10 authenticated by Kevin Keating. The “Singing Cowboy” owned the Angels from 1961-97. John played for Autry from 1982-85.

Lot 121.  John Grisham Autographed First Edition of “The Brethren.” Gem mint 10 signature on the first title page inscribed to Tommy John. The 2000 stated first edition book is vg-ex in a vg dust jacket. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph.

Lot 122.  Ball Signed by Lemmon, Matthau, Newhart, Hackman, Funicello, Boone, Etc. This ONL Feeney baseball was signed for Tommy John by 17 celebrities at a gathering of Hollywood stars at Dodger Stadium. Jack Lemmon, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Max Baer share the sweet spot. Panels are signed by Walter Matthau, Bob Newhart, McLean Stevenson of “M*A*S*H,” Annette Funicello, Gene Hackman, Greg Morris of “Mission Impossible,” Pat Boone, Kenny Rogers, major leaguer John Berardino of “General Hospital,” Norman Alden of “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” comedian-actor Jack Carter, and Michael Dante, actor friend of John Wayne who appeared in numerous movies and TV programs, including “Winterhawk,” “Star Trek” and “Days of Our Lives.” He also played minor league baseball as Ralph Vitti. The autographs, authenticated by Kevin Keating, are strong, varying from nm-m 8 to gem mint 10. The ball comes with a letter of authenticity from Tommy John.

Lot 123.  Country Music Autographs – Homer & Jethro, the Gatlin Brothers, Etc. The autographs in this collection are by Homer & Jethro, the Gatlin Brothers, Jimmy Dean (died 2010) and Bill Anderson. Homer & Jethro – Henry Haynes (d. 1971) and Ken Burns (d. 1989) – created a successful career by writing and singing parodies popular songs from the 1940s-60s. In 1959, they won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Performance - Musical for satirizing the Johnny Horton song “The Battle of New Orleans” as “The Battle of Kookamonga”. They were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Their autographs, as “Homer & Jethro,” are on an 8” x 10” black & white photo personalized to Tommy. The autographs are 10s. Separately, Jethro sent John a signed handwritten, undated note on the duo’s stationery. Another 8” x 10” b&w photo is signed by Larry Gatlin and his brothers, Steve and Rudy. The brothers were one of country music’s most successful acts of the 1970s and 1980s. The autographs, personalized, range from nm 7 to mint 9. Bill (Anderson) signed his first name on a typed 1990 letter. Jimmy Dean autographed the back of a promotional card from the Landmark in Las Vegas. His signature is an 8-9. The collection also includes two unsigned Glenn Campbell items, including a menu with his photo from a performance at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Lot 236.  Robert F. Kennedy Pictured Twice in a 1947 Harvard Football Program. The future U.S. Senator, Attorney General and Presidential candidate is shown individually and as a member of the Harvard team. Kennedy was a reserve end. The program is for the Oct. 18 Holy Cross game. It is vg+ with two staple holes in the upper left and 1” spine split at the top. Two ticket stubs for the game come with the program. Each stub has two pin holes and otherwise is vg-ex.

Lot 319.  1930 Pie-Eyed Mickey Mouse Baseball Batter Bisque. One of the most desirable of the Disney bisques, this Mickey Mouse batter stands 3 ½” tall. His name is impressed into the front of his shorts and “Walt E. Disney” is on the back. “Made in Japan” is impressed into the back of his jersey. He retains about 90% of the paint. A small chip on his left ear appears to have been touched up.

Lot 320.  1930 Pie-Eyed Mickey Mouse as a Baseball Catcher. This bisque is approximately 3 ¼” tall. Almost 100% of the paint is present. Impressed into the bisque is “Walt E. Disney” and “Made in Japan.” It is among the most desirable of the early Mickey Mouse figures.

Lot 459.  1942 Check Signed by Comedian George Burns and Clarabelle the Cow!?!!! Bold gem mint 10 signature by the beloved comedian on the front of a check from “George N. Burns and Grace Allen Burns” dated Nov. 18, 1942. The check is made out to and signed on the back by Elvira Allman, who played “Tootsie Sagwell,” a man-hungry spinster, on Burns’ 1940s radio sitcom. She had played a similar character in a 1938 Bob Hope program. From 1928-42, she provided the voice for Clarabelle the Cow in 28 Disney cartoons; almost 50 years later, she revived the role in “The Prince and the Pauper.” In the 1950s-60s, she appeared on TV in Lucille Ball, Jack Benny and Burns. She died in 1992. In a career that spanned most of the 20th century, Burns re-invented himself several times. He succeeded in vaudeville, radio, television and the movies. He performed until shortly before his death at 100 in 1996. Vintage Burns signatures are scarce.

Lot 460.  Johnny Carson Vintage Autograph Authenticated by PSA-DNA. Our consignor obtained this signature in 1962, when Carson was still hosting the daytime contest show “Who Do You Trust?” Later that year, he became the long-running host of “The Tonight Show.” Long-time Carson sidekick Ed McMahon was part of the contest show. During a break, Carson autographed a 2” x 4” section of relatively thick, stiff paper. The signature is mint 9 with some creases in the paper. PSA-DNA has certified and encased the signature. Carson retired in 1992. He passed away in 2005. Kevin Keating also authenticated the autograph.

Lot 461.  Autograph of President Gerald Ford on an OAL Budig Baseball. Gem mint 10 signature on the sweet spot; the ball is nm-m. Ford served his Michigan constituents in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1949-73, when he replaced Spiro Agnew as Richard Nixon’s Vice President. Less than a year later, he became President when Nixon resigned. Although a star football player at the University of Michigan, Ford said he wanted to be a baseball player, but “nobody would sign me.” He also said, “In baseball when they say you're out, you're out. It's the same way in politics.” Ford died in 2006. Authenticated by Kevin Keating

Lot 462.  Hubert H Humphrey Autographed Autobiography “Humphrey.” The title page of this 48-page softcover is inscribed with a mint 9 to gem mint 10 signature. Humphrey issued the extensively illustrated publication as he campaigned for U.S. Vice President in 1964. He served as Lyndon B. Johnson’s VP from 1965-69. In 1968, he received the Democrat nomination for President but lost to Richard Nixon. In 1971, he was re-elected to the U.S. Senate, where he remained until his death in 1978. The softcover publication is vg. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
