Folded twice for mailing, the poster has pin holes in the corners, has 1” tears along the horizontal and vertical mailing folds, and both folds are reinforced on the back with tape. This is an impressive display item.
Winning Bid $100.

Lot 346.  Babe Ruth Original May 24, 1935 Photo at Forbes Field. This apparent press photo is dated May 24, 1935 on the back. It shows Ruth looking skyward after connecting with a pitch. Playing for the Boston Braves, Ruth went one-for-four against the Pittsburgh Pirates to improve his average to .153. The next day, he had one of the best days of his career, connecting for three home runs and a single in four at bats and driving in six runs. In another five days, he played his final game. The sepia 7” x 9” vintage, original photo has a 1” tear in the upper right, a couple of heavy creases and a stain below Ruth’s left elbow. It presents a fine image of the Bambino in the final days of his legendary career.
Winning Bid $390.

Lot 347.  Lou Gehrig in 3 Type 1 1930s Wire Photos and a Newspaper Photo. The earliest photo, dated June 22, 1933, pictures Gehrig in uniform at White Sox Park next to his fiancé, Eleanore Twitchell. They married in September. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” sepia photo from International News Photos has pinholes in the upper corners and in the bottom border; otherwise, it is vg-ex. A brief caption is attached. Another 6 ½” x 8 ½” International News photo shows Gehrig from the waist up; vg+ and stamped “Jun 28 1939” on the back. An original 8” x 9 ¾” newspaper photo captures Gehrig in the Yankees’ dugout. Vg and dated April 29, 1938. An original, undated AP wire photo, apparently from early 1939, shows Gehrig in a suit as the Yankees traveled while playing exhibition games in Texas. The caption below the photo mentions Gehrig’s decline. It optimistically reports that “Gehrig slugged the baseball far and wide and played his first sack as of old to offset experts’ reports he was slipping badly.” Ex 7 ¾” x 10” photo. Extremely nice displayable collection of Gehrig original photos.
Winning Bid $321.

Lot 348.  Lou Gehrig on the Covers of 6 1920s-30s Publications. Quality group of complete publications. A large image of the Yankees’ ironman is on the cover of the Aug. 6, 1927 “Police Gazette,” and the publication describes him as “‘Babe’ Ruth’s Rival for Home-Run Honors.” The cover has some stains and chips along the edge. The photo of Gehrig is clean and displays nicely. The same image is used on the cover of “The Sporting News Record Book for 1928,” light border stains, vg. Gehrig is on the cover of another guide, the 1937 “Who’s Who in Baseball,” vg+ to ex. On the cover of the April 1935 “Baseball Magazine,” Gehrig is all smiles as he is described as “the leading slugger of the American League.” Inside, he is shown signing his $30,000 contract, which makes him baseball’s highest-paid player. Extremely nice ex-m copy. As MVPs of their respective leagues, Gehrig and Carl Hubbell share the cover of the Oct. 5, 1937 “Time” issue. Vg. Finally, the July 1937 “PIC Sports Pictures” has an outstanding cover photo of “Larrupin’ Lou” and five more pages of photos inside. Ex-m. Excellent publications for reading or framing for display.
Winning Bid $472.

Lot 350.  1955 Game 7 Dodgers at Yankees World Series Program Vintage-Scored! While programs from the only World Series the Bums ever won are not uncommon, vintage-scored examples, particularly from this most important game, are virtually non-existent. We do not recall seeing another. The program is nicely scored. On the front cover is written “7th Game 62,465” - the day’s attendance. Otherwise, the program has a vg-ex Lon Keller cover and an ex interior.
Winning Bid $291.
