Lot 76. 3 Signed Books: HoFer Ron Polk’s “Baseball Playbook,” Bobby Bragan’s Autobiography, Etc. A member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, Pope is the seventh winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 history. The long-time Mississippi State coach, he has won more games than any other coach in Southeast Conference history. His 1982 self-published trade paperback, which covers every aspect of coaching in 520 pages, is scarce. His signature on the title page is gem mint 10 and personalized to “Clyde.” The book is vg with some pages loose. Bragan (died 2010) played and coached in the majors, creating some especially memorable moments for Pittsburgh Pirates’ fans. Titled “You Can’t Hit the Ball with the Bat on Your Shoulder,” his 1992 book, a stated first printing, is ex-m in an ex dust jacket that has some numbers written at the top. On the flyleaf, Bragan inscribed the book to John, referring to him as “everybody’s favorite left hander.” His signature is a 10. The other book is “Out of Left Field” by Jeffrey Lyons and Douglas B. Lyons, 1998 first edition paperback, ex. Jeffrey Lyons autographed the title page. His signature, a 10, is personalized to John. Kevin Keating authenticated the signatures. The books come with three signed “Property of Tommy John” labels.

Lot 77. Monty Stratton Autographed George Burke 4” x 6” Photo. His name is familiar because of the 1949 movie “The Monty Stratton Story” starring Jimmy Stewart. An All-Star in 1937, Stratton posted a 36-23 record from 1934-38 with the Chicago White Sox. Following the 1938 season, he accidentally shot his right leg while hunting rabbits on his farm, and the leg had to be amputated. His efforts to return to professional baseball became the focus of the movie. His inability to field bunted balls made his return difficult. In 1946, he finally received a chance with the Sherman Twins of the Class C East Texas League and won 18 games while losing 8. He died in 1982 at the age of 70. The autograph is strong and mint 9 with minor smudging on the last several letters. The signed photo, which has some creases and a small “dimple” with a tiny hole, comes with a letter signed by Tommy John, who also had to overcome some special physical challenges.

Lot 78. Dave Winfield Autographed Game-Worn Yankees Baseball Cap. The Hall of Fame outfielder and Tommy John played together for New York in 1981 and 1982 and again from 1986 through 1989. Given to John by Winfield, the hat has a large mint 9 to gem mint 10 Winfield autograph on the underside of the bill, which also has the outfielder’s uniform number. The hat shows considerable use, and “NY” is off-white. It comes with a letter from John stating it is from his collection. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 79. 4 Signed New York Yankees 8” x 10” Color Photos – Mattingly, Giambi and Gooden. The autographs are mint 9 or gem mint 10 and have been authenticated by Kevin Keating. The photo autographed by Don Mattingly is mounted on a 10.5” x 13” plaque with a bronze plate identifying him as “The Hit Man 1985 American League M.V.P.” Jason Giambi signed two different photos that are framed. Gooden’s signature is on a photo that shows him and his teammates celebrating after a victory. They come with a signed letter “From the Desk of Tommy John.”

Lot 80. 29 New York Yankees Autographs Including Henderson, Mattingly, Guidry, Duren, John. Eleven autographs are on baseball cards, eight 1987 Topps: #5 Dave Righetti, 62 Bobby Meacham, 174 Henry Cotto, 224 Wayne Tolleson, 236 Tommy John, 584 Ron Kittle, 735 Rickey Henderson and 788 Tim Stoddard. John’s card is mounted on a 5.75” x 7.5” plaque. Ryne Duren, who died in January, signed a 2002 Winning Beyond Winning card; Gary Ward, a 1988 Sportflics card, and Ron Guidry, 1982 Donruss card #558 that shows him with John. Fifteen autographs are on a page from the Yankees’ 2000 Fantasy Camp: Gene Michael, Hector Lopez, Oscar Gamble, Johnny Blanchard, Mickey Rivers, Roy White, Mike Torrez, Joe Pepitone, Graig Nettles, Paul Blair, Elliott Maddox, Jim Spencer and John. Don Mattingly’s autograph and John’s are on folders that reproduce their 1988 Topps cards. There also is an 8” x 10” photocopied photo signed by John. The signatures are almost all mint 9 or gem mint 10, and they have been authenticated by Kevin Keating.
