Baseball Original Artwork, Photos and Lithos   16 Lots       »

Lot 338.  Roberto Clemente Limited Edition Lithograph - #21 of 500 – by Dick Perez. This lithograph features the artwork Perez created for the Clemente puzzle inserted with the 1987 Donruss baseball card set. It is enclosed in a 20” x 26” metal frame. Our consignor requested and received print #21, for Clemente’s uniform number, from the Perez-Steele Galleries. Perez signed the lithograph. Mint.
Winning Bid $200.

Lot 346.  Babe Ruth Original May 24, 1935 Photo at Forbes Field. This apparent press photo is dated May 24, 1935 on the back. It shows Ruth looking skyward after connecting with a pitch. Playing for the Boston Braves, Ruth went one-for-four against the Pittsburgh Pirates to improve his average to .153. The next day, he had one of the best days of his career, connecting for three home runs and a single in four at bats and driving in six runs. In another five days, he played his final game. The sepia 7” x 9” vintage, original photo has a 1” tear in the upper right, a couple of heavy creases and a stain below Ruth’s left elbow. It presents a fine image of the Bambino in the final days of his legendary career.
Winning Bid $390.

Lot 347.  Lou Gehrig in 3 Type 1 1930s Wire Photos and a Newspaper Photo. The earliest photo, dated June 22, 1933, pictures Gehrig in uniform at White Sox Park next to his fiancé, Eleanore Twitchell. They married in September. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” sepia photo from International News Photos has pinholes in the upper corners and in the bottom border; otherwise, it is vg-ex. A brief caption is attached. Another 6 ½” x 8 ½” International News photo shows Gehrig from the waist up; vg+ and stamped “Jun 28 1939” on the back. An original 8” x 9 ¾” newspaper photo captures Gehrig in the Yankees’ dugout. Vg and dated April 29, 1938. An original, undated AP wire photo, apparently from early 1939, shows Gehrig in a suit as the Yankees traveled while playing exhibition games in Texas. The caption below the photo mentions Gehrig’s decline. It optimistically reports that “Gehrig slugged the baseball far and wide and played his first sack as of old to offset experts’ reports he was slipping badly.” Ex 7 ¾” x 10” photo. Extremely nice displayable collection of Gehrig original photos.
Winning Bid $321.

Lot 351.  Ebbets Field “A Field in Flatbush” Print and Brick. Built in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn and opened in 1913, Ebbets Field served as home to the Dodgers until 1957. The ball park was demolished in 1960 to make way for an apartment building. From a painting by Bill Levers, the 25” x 23” lithograph presents a 22.75” x 17” image of the Ebbets Field exterior in the 1950s. Below the image is a section of brick removed from the rotunda area during demolition. It is attached to the glass of the 25.5” x 23.5” frame. Text to the left and right says “An Authentic Piece of Baseball History.” In pencil, the title of the lithograph is written above. The print is numbered 1512 of 1957 at the left, and Levers signed it in pencil at the right. Kevin Keating authenticated Levers’ autograph.
Winning Bid $150.

Lot 463.  Stunning Original Painting Signed by Roberts, Niekro, Jenkins and Ozzie Smith. This acrylic-on-canvas painting by former major leaguer Gene Locklear features life-like, detailed images of Robin Roberts, Phil Niekro, Fergie Jenkins and Ozzie Smith. Each Hall of Fame star has placed a large gem mint 10 autograph, authenticated by Kevin Keating, near his image. Locklear produced the painting, which is about 41.5” x 71” framed to 46.5” x 77”, at a Baseball Hall of Fame Fantasy Camp. The player images surround the Baseball Hall of Fame logo and a Little League player. At the bottom, the painting is signed by Locklear and several other players who attended the camp. Locklear had a five-season MLB career as an outfielder with the Reds, Padres and Yankees. A full-blooded Lumbee, he paints Native American portraits and scenes, as well as sports art. This original painting is dramatic, and unique!
Winning Bid $1,821.
