Baseball Books   3 Lots

Lot 310.  Scarce Autobiography of Baseball Pioneer and Hall of Fame Player Cap Anson (HoF). The Hall of Fame first baseman didn’t spare any words in creating a title for his book: “A Ball Player’s Career: Being the Personal Experiences and Reminiscences of Adrian C. Anson, Late Manager and Captain of the Chicago Baseball Club.” First edition hardback, 1900, from Era Publishing. Vg boards with an ex-m interior. Baseball’s first real superstar, Anson was controversial too. This book provides interesting insights on his view of the game and life. In a 22-season career, he collected 3,012 hits, drove in 1,880 runs and batted .331. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939.
Winning Bid $248.

Lot 311.  Eliot Asinof Autograph with a Stated First Edition of “Eight Men Out.” This classic 1963 book on the Black Sox and the 1919 World Series exhibits some foxing on the boards and otherwise has a near mint appearance. The dust jacket is very nice, ex-m+. Asinof’s signature is large on a 4” x 5 ½” section of heavy paper. It rates a 10 of 10. The author passed away in 2008. Autograph authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 312.  1933 Hardbound “Who’s Who in Major League Baseball.” Published by Grover C. Buxton of Chicago and compiled by sportswriter Harold (Speed) Johnson, who has signed a brief pencil inscription on the flyleaf as “Speed.” Signature authenticated by Kevin Keating. This scarce period reference is what every annual should be. Consisting of 544 pages, it devotes a full page each to several hundred baseball players. Each player is represented by a large photo, his full record and a biographical sketch with career highlights. The “Who’s Who” starts with Earl “Sparky” Adams and ends with Tom Zachary. Judge Landis, managers, owners and other personalities also are profiled. This copy has purple covers that show sunning along the spine, and the owner’s name is stamped on the flyleaf. The covers are slightly loose, but still firmly attached. Inside, there is a signature under Gus Suhr’s photo, which shows some paper loss. Ex copy without a dust jacket. Scarce and desirable.
Winning Bid $180.
