Lot 73.  Clyde King Signed Autobiography A King’s Legacy. King, who passed away last year, spent more than 60 years in baseball. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Red and managed the San Francisco Giants, Braves and Yankees. For many years, he served as a special advisor to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Self-published and very scarce, King’s 1999 softcover book is ex. His autograph on the title page is a 10 of 10 at the end of a lengthy inscription to John dated Sept. 12, 1999. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Comes with a “Property of Tommy John” label.

Lot 75.  Mike Pagliarulo Signed 1990 Padres Game Home Jersey from Tommy John’s Collection. Nm-m 8 autograph authenticated by Kevin Keating on the left side of the uniform above “Padres.” The Rawlings size 44 jersey has a “Set 2 1990” tag inside. Pagliarulo’s major league career as a third baseman spanned 11 seasons with the Yankees, Padres, Twins, Orioles and Rangers. Comes with an authentication letter “From the Desk of Tommy John.”

Lot 76.  3 Signed Books: HoFer Ron Polk’s “Baseball Playbook,” Bobby Bragan’s Autobiography, Etc. A member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, Pope is the seventh winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 history. The long-time Mississippi State coach, he has won more games than any other coach in Southeast Conference history. His 1982 self-published trade paperback, which covers every aspect of coaching in 520 pages, is scarce. His signature on the title page is gem mint 10 and personalized to “Clyde.” The book is vg with some pages loose. Bragan (died 2010) played and coached in the majors, creating some especially memorable moments for Pittsburgh Pirates’ fans. Titled “You Can’t Hit the Ball with the Bat on Your Shoulder,” his 1992 book, a stated first printing, is ex-m in an ex dust jacket that has some numbers written at the top. On the flyleaf, Bragan inscribed the book to John, referring to him as “everybody’s favorite left hander.” His signature is a 10. The other book is “Out of Left Field” by Jeffrey Lyons and Douglas B. Lyons, 1998 first edition paperback, ex. Jeffrey Lyons autographed the title page. His signature, a 10, is personalized to John. Kevin Keating authenticated the signatures. The books come with three signed “Property of Tommy John” labels.

Lot 77.  Monty Stratton Autographed George Burke 4” x 6” Photo. His name is familiar because of the 1949 movie “The Monty Stratton Story” starring Jimmy Stewart. An All-Star in 1937, Stratton posted a 36-23 record from 1934-38 with the Chicago White Sox. Following the 1938 season, he accidentally shot his right leg while hunting rabbits on his farm, and the leg had to be amputated. His efforts to return to professional baseball became the focus of the movie. His inability to field bunted balls made his return difficult. In 1946, he finally received a chance with the Sherman Twins of the Class C East Texas League and won 18 games while losing 8. He died in 1982 at the age of 70. The autograph is strong and mint 9 with minor smudging on the last several letters. The signed photo, which has some creases and a small “dimple” with a tiny hole, comes with a letter signed by Tommy John, who also had to overcome some special physical challenges.

Lot 78.  Dave Winfield Autographed Game-Worn Yankees Baseball Cap. The Hall of Fame outfielder and Tommy John played together for New York in 1981 and 1982 and again from 1986 through 1989. Given to John by Winfield, the hat has a large mint 9 to gem mint 10 Winfield autograph on the underside of the bill, which also has the outfielder’s uniform number. The hat shows considerable use, and “NY” is off-white. It comes with a letter from John stating it is from his collection. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 79.  4 Signed New York Yankees 8” x 10” Color Photos – Mattingly, Giambi and Gooden. The autographs are mint 9 or gem mint 10 and have been authenticated by Kevin Keating. The photo autographed by Don Mattingly is mounted on a 10.5” x 13” plaque with a bronze plate identifying him as “The Hit Man 1985 American League M.V.P.” Jason Giambi signed two different photos that are framed. Gooden’s signature is on a photo that shows him and his teammates celebrating after a victory. They come with a signed letter “From the Desk of Tommy John.”

Lot 80.  29 New York Yankees Autographs Including Henderson, Mattingly, Guidry, Duren, John. Eleven autographs are on baseball cards, eight 1987 Topps: #5 Dave Righetti, 62 Bobby Meacham, 174 Henry Cotto, 224 Wayne Tolleson, 236 Tommy John, 584 Ron Kittle, 735 Rickey Henderson and 788 Tim Stoddard. John’s card is mounted on a 5.75” x 7.5” plaque. Ryne Duren, who died in January, signed a 2002 Winning Beyond Winning card; Gary Ward, a 1988 Sportflics card, and Ron Guidry, 1982 Donruss card #558 that shows him with John. Fifteen autographs are on a page from the Yankees’ 2000 Fantasy Camp: Gene Michael, Hector Lopez, Oscar Gamble, Johnny Blanchard, Mickey Rivers, Roy White, Mike Torrez, Joe Pepitone, Graig Nettles, Paul Blair, Elliott Maddox, Jim Spencer and John. Don Mattingly’s autograph and John’s are on folders that reproduce their 1988 Topps cards. There also is an 8” x 10” photocopied photo signed by John. The signatures are almost all mint 9 or gem mint 10, and they have been authenticated by Kevin Keating.

DON LARSEN, 9-10 signature, nm+ OAL Budig ball. BERNIE WILLIAMS, 10 signature, mint OML Selig ball. John Candelaria, 9-10, ex-m to nm Brown ball. TOMMY JOHN, gem mint 10 signature, apparent game-used Brown ball. In addition, DON ZIMMER signed the sweet spot of an nm-m Selig ball, and YOGI BERRA autographed the south panel. Their signatures are 9s. Authenticated by Kevin Keating and accompanied by a signed letter “From the Desk of Tommy John.”

The autographs are by Billy Martin, Mike Ferraro (not personalized*), Art Fowler*, Jim Beattie, Juan Beniquez*, Chris Chambliss, Ron Davis, Bucky Dent, Ed Figueroa, Rich Gossage, Ron Guidry, Don Hood*, Jim Catfish Hunter*, Reggie Jackson, Jim Kaat, Bobby Murcer, Jerry Narron*, Lou Piniella*, Jim Spencer, Fred Stanley, Roy White and Kenny Clay.

Eclectic collection with autographs of three Hall of Fame members: FRANK ROBINSON and BILL MAZEROSKI on OML Selig baseballs and GARY CARTER on a Rawlings Little League baseball. These three signatures are mint 9 to gem mint 10, and the baseballs are mint. The other signers are: CECIL COOPER, mint 9 to gem mint 10 on a side panel of an OAL MacPhail ball, possibly game-used. Lot 180.  Nolan Ryan 2005 Absolute Memorabilia Tools of the Trade Signed Double-Swatch Card. This card, identified as TT-34, is #1 OF ONLY 15 MANUFACTURED by Donruss Playoff. It shows Ryan as a member of the Texas Rangers. His signature is a bold gem mint 10. The card, which contains a jersey section and a bat sections, grades nm. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph.

Three autographs of Bill Mazeroski are included, and one of Ramon Mejias, whose signature turns up infrequently. The autographs are overwhelmingly mint 9s and gem mint 10s. Throughout, we have listed last names only; first names also are signed. There are no more than three personalizations. All of the autographs are on different items; there are no duplicates. Twenty-three signatures are on index cards, almost all unlined, with a few cuts: Barone, Bright, Christopher, Daniels, Face, Friend, Giel, Groat, Haddix, Kravitz, Law, Mejias, Mizell, Narron, Oldis, Schofield, Skinner, Smith, Trucks, Vernon, Virdon, Whitt. Team Issues, all different, are signed by Face, Friend (2), Groat (2), Law (3), Skinner and Virdon (2). Groat signed two magazine covers, the Aug. 8, 1960 “Sports Illustrated” and the May 1961 “Sport.” Finally there are autographs of Groat, Daniels, Law, Friend (2), Skinner, Smith, Face and Smith on various media. In addition, Maz autographed a “Beat ‘Em Bucs” envelope with the World Series line score for each game. The 30 players represented are Baker, Barone, Bright, Burgess, Christopher, Cimoli, Daniels, Face, Friend, Gibbon, Giel, Green, Groat, Haddix, Kravitz, Law, Mazeroski, Mejias, Mizell, Narron, Nelson, Oldis, Schofield, Skinner, Smith, Stuart, Trucks, Vernon, Virdon and Witt. Great collection for a Pirates fan, and it has excellent break-up potential for a dealer!
