Lot 164.  University of Pennsylvania 1935 Football Charm for Lawrence F. Strem. This 10 karat gold charm has the university’s color “P” logo in raised release, and Strem’s name, “1935” and “Guard” engraved. The 1935 team went 4-4. Strem earned letters in football at Penn in 1934 and 1935, and a degree in education in 1936. He passed away in 2002. The charm weighs about 0.2 ounce.
Winning Bid $50.

Lot 165.  Rare Pin and Program for Jackie Robinson’s Brooklyn Dodgers Football Team. With the baseball Hall of Fame player as general manager, the Dodgers competed for one season – 1966 – in the short-lived Continental League. Established in 1965 as a minor league with hopes of becoming a significant influence on pro football, the league folded at the end of the 1969. The Dodgers failed to attract a large following. Both the 3 ½” pin and the program, for the Orlando Panthers game, depict a “bum” similar to Willard Mullin’s. The pin is nm. The 16-page program, which is vg-ex, has photos of Robinson and head coach and football HoF member Andy Robustelli. Also included is a page promoting the Dodgers’ game vs. Richmond.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 166.  4 Vintage Football Novels for Youth. 1914 “Bert Wilson on the Gridiron” by J. W. Duffield, vg-ex. Harold M. Sherman’s “One Minute to Play” (1926) with a Red Grange photo, vg-ex, owner’s name and flyleaf, and “It’s a Pass!” g-vg. Also, “Throw the Long Bomb!” by Jack Laflin (1967), vg. All hardbacks without dust jackets.
Winning Bid $10.

Lot 167.  Two Publications Providing Instruction on How to Play Football – One by Bernie Bierman. A member of the College Hall of Fame, Bierman coached at Minnesota. His 32-page booklet, apparently from 1937, is simply titled “How to Play Football.” It has a photo each of the 1936 Pitt and Washington college teams. Vg-ex. The second publication is 1963 hardback book, “Quarterback Generalship and Strategy,” by Donald E. Fuoss, vg+ to ex book, dust jacket missing.
Winning Bid $35.

Lot 168.  6 Football Books: “Ronald Encyclopedia,” “Necessary Roughness,” John Madden, Etc. Harold Claassen’s “Ronald Encyclopedia of Football” is a relatively obscure hardback that provides 836 pages of useful information; 1960 apparent first edition, vg-ex book, g-vg dust jacket that is heavily taped inside. Jack Zanger’s “Pro Football 1969” seems relatively difficult to find. This paperback has a heavily damaged back cover and otherwise is vg. The other books are: “Necessary Roughness,” Mike Trope, 1987, ex+/vg-ex. “One Knee Equals Two Feet,” John Madden, 1986 stated first edition, ex/ex. “Football: Facts & Figures,” Dr. L. H. Baker, 1945, vg+ book, dj absent. And “Official NFL Illustrated Digest 1968,” Don Smith, g-vg softcover.
Minimum Bid $20.
