Baseball Photography   5 Lots

Lot 229.  Babe Ruth “Home Run on the Keys” Original 1936 Wire Photo. Acme Newspictures issued this 6” x 8” glossy photo, which shows Ruth being prepared for an appearance in the nine-minute movie short from Warner Bros. In the feature, Ruth recounts the story of his called home run in the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field against Chicago. The caption is attached to the back. Vg photo with outstanding clarity and contrast.
Winning Bid $61.

Lot 230.  Original 1938 Acme Wire Photo of Hack Wilson, Nightclub MC and Singer. The photo shows the future Hall of Fame outfielder dancing with a young woman at Flynn’s Place in Brooklyn. Wilson’s nightclub career apparently was short-lived. The photo is vg-ex and displays very well.
Winning Bid $10.

Lot 231.  1947 Original Wire Photo of St. Louis Browns First Baseman Jerry Witte. Ex-m 6” x 8” photo with a March 25 caption speculating that Witte could be the Browns “regular first baseman when the season opens.” Witte’s 46 home runs in 1946 with Toledo fueled the speculation. On Opening Day 1947, Witte was at first base for St. Louis, and he batted fifth in the lineup. Unfortunately, he could not come close to duplicating in the majors what he had achieved in the minors. By mid-season, his major league adventure was over – with four home runs and a .213 career average. He journeyed through the minor for another six seasons and retired with 308 minor league home runs.
Winning Bid $15.

Lot 232.  Vintage 8” x 10” Photo of the 1951 St. Louis Cardinals. Double-matted to 11” x 13”, the sepia photo pictures Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, Joe Garagiola, Red Schoendienst and others. The players and others associated with the team are identified on an accompanying page. Nm.
Winning Bid $25.

Lot 233.  1975 UPI Wire Photo of Cleveland Rookie Manager Frank Robinson. In 1975, Robinson became the first African-American manager in the majors. The July 7 wire photo shows him arguing with umpire Larry Barnett, who called a ball on a half-swing by Oakland’s Reggie Jackson. Barnett tossed Robinson out of the game. The 9” x 8” photo is accompanied by the caption. This photo, transmitted to a newspaper, is ex.
Minimum Bid $20.
