September's Top 10   10 Lots

Lot 1.  17 Different 1920 W519 Cards Representing All 3 Subsets - 6 HoFers. This collection includes an uncataloged card of Gleason. Some cards in the first two subsets are difficult to distinguish. Ten appear to be from the Numbered Type 1 issue. These hand-cut strip cards constitute one-half of the set: # 3 Cravath (could be Type 1 or Type 2; moderate paper loss on the blank back; otherwise) vg-ex, 6 George Sisler (HoF) g, 7 Benton vg, 8 Johnston f, 9 Wilber (Wilbert) Robinson (HoF) g-vg, 10 Griffith g, 13 Barnes (green background, “New York” on jersey; moderate paper loss on the blank back; otherwise) vg, 15 Schalk (HoF) g, 17 Murphy p-f and 18 Frisch (HoF) vg. The Numbered Type 2 cards are #11 Gleasen (Gleason) p-f, 12 Murphy g, 13 Frisch (HoF) vg-ex, 13 Barnes (yellow background, no name on jersey) f-g, 17 Marquard (HoF) (miscut; otherwise) vg and 20 Schang f. The Gleasen (Gleason) card is an addition to the checklist, at least as presented in the 2010 edition of SCD’s Standard Catalog. A card of Cravath is from the unnumbered subset f-g. In general, these cards were poorly printed, and both portraits of Frisch are less than flattering. The uncataloged Gleason card and the condition of the Type 1 Frisch card make this group well worth our
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 2.  N.Y. Mets “Superstars” Bonanza – 1992, 1993 and 2000 UNCATALOGED Sets! And related promotional items as well! Apparently beginning in 1992, the Port St. Lucie News and The Stuart News newspapers issued full-newspaper-page color posters (about 13 ¾” x 22 ¾”) of 10 Mets players in the newspaper during spring training. SCD’s Standard Catalog has cataloged most of the 1992 set, but not the 1993 and later sets. The checklist for 1992 is: Bonilla, Coleman, Elster, Franco, Hundley, Howard Johnson, Magadan, Murray, Randolf (Randolph) and Saberhagen. In this collection, there are two copies of the Saberhagen poster, and the Johnson poster has a personalized autograph. These posters are generally as issued and nm. The checklist for 1993 is: Bonilla, Coleman, Sid Fernandez, Tony Fernandez, Franco, Hundley, Johnson, Kent, Murray and Ryan Thompson. There are two copies of the Thompson poster. These posters are printed on thinner paper stock than the 1992 issue and are a mix of vg-ex and ex+. In this collection, the 1992 set is accompanied by nine of 10 smaller photos that were intended to be cut out and placed on a playing field poster issued by the newspapers. These photos were part of promotional ads for the posters. Each is about 2 ½” x 3 ½” with a black border. According to the ad, “At the conclusion of this promotion, you will have a complete line-up with all the playing positions filled.” The playing field posters are present for 1992 and 1993. Each has a space for photos of 10 position players, including a relief pitcher. Johnson is missing from this collection. Nm photos. Interestingly, a promotion for the 1993 playing field features Dwight Gooden, but apparently a poster of him was not issued. The checklist for 2000 apparently is complete with: Alfonzo, Benitez, Cook, Franco, Hamilton, Rickey Henderson, Leiter, Ordonez, Piazza, Reed, Wendell and a Spring Training Schedule poster that pictures 10 players. A mix of vg-ex and ex. There also are several posters for 2001: Alfonzo, Franco, Ordonez and Zeile, ex. And 2002: Burnitz and Glavine, vg+ to ex. In addition, there are 1992 posters of Sid Fernandez and Johnson (personalized autograph) from the Tribune. If you’re looking for something you won’t see every day, this is it! 50+ items! Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $75.

Lot 3.  OAL Baseball Signed by 3 New York Yankees Perfect-Game Pitchers and Their Catchers. The most famous of the perfect-game hurlers, Don Larsen, signed the sweet spot of the Budig ball along with catcher Yogi Berra. Larsen added the date he pitched the only World Series perfect game – “10-8-56” – against the Brooklyn Dodgers. With Jorge Posada catching, David Wells faced only 27 Minnesota Twins on May 17, 1998. He and Posada autographed the north panel, and Wells added the date. The most recent of the three perfect games was by Dave Cone on July 18, 1999 against the Montreal Expos. He signed the south panel and added the date: his catcher, Joe Girardi, also signed. The signatures are 9s and 10s on an nm-m ball that shows light toning. Rare! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $245.

Lot 4.  Sandy Koufax Bold Autograph on a Gold Hall of Fame Plaque Postcard. Gem mint 10 signature by Koufax, who was enshrined at Cooperstown in 1972. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 5.  Stunning, Large ORIGINAL Painting Signed by Roberts, Niekro, Jenkins and Smith. You may recognize this outstanding painting from CCA28. Since it did not receive the minimum bid, our consignor said “Lower the minimum bid and sell it!” This acrylic-on-canvas painting, about 41 ½” x 71” framed to 46 ½” x 77”, is by former major leaguer Gene Locklear. He has created two images each of Robin Roberts, Phil Niekro, Fergie Jenkins and Ozzie Smith. They surround the Baseball Hall of Fame logo and a Little League player. Each Hall of Fame player has placed a large autograph next to one of his images. Locklear had a five-season MLB career as an outfielder with the Reds, Padres and Yankees. He played also in Japan. A full-blooded Lumbee, he paints Native American portraits and scenes, as well as sports subjects. He created this painting at a Hall of Fame Baseball Fantasy Camp. The player autographs are gem mint 10s authenticated by Kevin Keating. This painting would be a dramatic presence in a number of settings – the entrance to corporate or attorneys’ offices, an upscale bar, the offices of a sports franchise or a family room. Absolutely unique! NOTE: This lot will need to be delivered by freight. The price to Zone 10 (California) would be approximately $485. We will try our best to meet the winner with the painting or deliver it for a reasonable handling fee if the winner is somewhere not too far from the Pittsburgh area.
Minimum Bid $500.

Lot 6.  1897 Princeton Trophy Ball for an 11-0 Win Against the University of Vermont. After winning on their home field, the victors painted this figure-eight ball green and added the final score in white. The ball displays as ex with a couple of chips away from the score and some surface wear. The 1897 Tigers won the Big Three Championship (over Harvard and Yale) with a 25-5 record. Nineteenth century trophy balls are scarce, and this one displays very nicely.
Winning Bid $242.

Lot 7.  2 Vintage Photos of a 1920s Bacharach Giants Negro Leagues Player – Said to by Jimmy Shields. The Atlantic City Bacharach Giants played as an independent team and in various Negro Leagues from 1923-34. Two 2 ½” x 3 ½” sepia photos capture a player in uniform. “Bacharach Giants” is clearly visible on the front of his uniform in one photo. The player appears in a pitching pose in the second photo. He signed one photo, and the autograph appears to read “James Shields.” In 1928 and 1929, Shields pitched for the team. Both photos have scrapbook residue on the back, as well as a “Novox Print” stamp by a Washington, D.C., studio. The signed photo has a clipped lower right corner. We cannot guarantee that the player is Shields. Bacharach Giants’ photos are very scarce.
Winning Bid $55.

Lot 8.  Magnificent, Scarce 1992 “The Doolittle Tokyo Raiders” Robert Taylor Print Signed by 14. (Jimmy) J. H. Doolittle himself heads the list of World War II heroes who autographed this stunning lithograph featuring Robert Taylor artwork. Taylor portrays Doolittle’s B-25 Mitchell bomber after its departure from the USS “Hornet.” Doolittle is airborne to lead a unit of B-25s on a daring aerial assault on Tokyo and other Japanese cities as the U.S. responds to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Besides Doolittle, the lithograph is autographed by navigator Hank Potter, pilot Davy Jones, bombardier Jacob DeShazer, pilot of the No. 2 aircraft Travis Hoover, navigator and bombardier H A Sessler, co-pilot J. R. Stork, co-pilot R E Cole, co-pilot Griff Williams, navigator Tom Griffin, co-pilot R A Knobloch, co-pilot Bob Emmens, pilot Bill Bower and pilot E W Holstrom. The autographs are 9s and 10. Taylor also signed. Doolittle, who passed away a year after the lithograph was issued, received the Medal of Honor for planning and leading the raid on Japan. Later, he served with distinction while commanding air forces in Italy and North Africa and eventually the Eighth Air Force in Europe. The lithograph, #103 of 1000, measures 37 ¾” x 27 ¼” with an image and signature area 33 ¾” x 22 ¾”. The print has been lightly rolled and has a couple of inoffensive creases outside the image area. Scarce and desirable print. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $500.

Lot 9.  “Silencing the Guns” Band of Brothers Print Signed by Maj. Dick Winters, 3 More. This 2005 artwork by James Dietz shows the “Band of Brothers” of Easy Company, 506th P.I.R., 101st Airborne Division, on June 6, 1944 in Normandy, France. They have just captured the first of four German cannons in the hedgerows of Brecourt Manor. Led by Lt. Winters, the 12 men of Easy Company, with a handful or reinforcements, routed the German gun crews and 50 paratroopers. For his actions, Lt. Winters was recommended for the Medal of Honor. Because of a quota system, he received the Distinguished Service Cross instead. The 22 ½” x 32” print is signed by the four surviving members of the Band of Brothers: Winters, who achieved the rank of major; Buck Compton, who retired from the service as a lieutenant colonel; (Sgt.) Wild Bill Guarnere and (Sgt.) Don Malarkey. Dietz also signed. Their pencil signatures are 10s. The print, #322 of 1,000, is rolled and nm-m.
