Lot 243.  276 1950s-60s Exhibit Cards Featuring Singers and Other Entertainers. Several sets are the source of these cards, which feature such top names as Tony Bennett, Pat Boone, Bobby Rydell, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Peggy Lee, Patti Page, Dinah Shore and the Andrews Sisters. Three cards are from the “Rock & Roll” set. These numbered, blank-backed cards have sepia photos and brief biographical information on the fronts: #29 Steve Lawrence, 43 Skip & Flip and 56 Dave (Baby) Cortez. A total of 156 cards are from a set that credits Billboard Music Week; these cards have b&w portraits on the front and brief biographies on the back: Paul Anka (5 cards), Harry Belafonte (12), Pat Boone (6), Edd “Kookie” Byrnes (14), Perry Como (5), Floyd Cramer (21), Joe Dowell, Steve Lawrence (15), Barry Mann, Gene McDaniels (2), Bobby Rydell (7), Tommy Sands (9), Neil Sedaka (14), Bobby Vee, Adam Wade (27) and Andy Williams (15). One or more salutation exhibit sets are the source of 117 additional cards: Andrews Sisters (2 cards), Tony Bennett (17), Dorothy Collins (5), De Castro Sisters (6), Fontaine Sisters (8), Connie Haines (7), Hildegarde (8), Kitty Kallen (4), Peggy Lee (5), Gisele MacKenzie, Marion Marlowe (8), Patti Page (3), Jimmie Rodgers (15), Roberta Sherwood (13), Dinah Shore (5), Ginny Simms (6), Kay Starr and Margaret Whiting (3). This nostalgic collection, which averages vg-ex, has excellent potential break-up value.

Lot 244.  1953 Bowman “Television & Radio Stars of the National Broadcasting Co.” Near Set. Ninety of 96 cards are present; only #4, 10, 65, 67, 75 and 95 are missing. Among the stars are #7 Carl Reiner, 8 Groucho Marx, 13 Hoagy Carmichael, 16 Audrey Meadows, 20 MacDonald Carey, 25 Stan Kenton, 26 Les Brown, 33 Sid Caesar, 46 Ted Mack, 50 Loretta Young, 83 Marlin Perkins and 84 Imogene Coca. Ex-m to nm overall with about a dozen cards that are vg-ex or less.

Lot 245.  “World on Wheels” 1953 Topps Near Set of 162 Plus a Display Box and Wrapper. This set, when complete, consists of 180 cards. Offered here are the initial 160 cards and #164 (pin hole; otherwise) ex+ and 178 vg. The breakdown of the first 160 cards is: Nm+: 6 cards. Nm: 15. Ex-m+: 14. Ex-m: 33. Ex+: 10. Ex: 31. Vg-ex: 18. Vg: 23. G-vg: 10. Accompanying the cards are a 5-cent display box, which is nicely intact and grades vg+ with a couple of small (1” or less) seam tears, and a 5-cent wrapper that has the usual folds and no tears. A wrapper insert promoting the “Giant Bazooka Bubble Gum Contest” is also included. Nice collection; the display box turns up infrequently.

Lot 246.  1966 Topps “Funny Rings” Set of 24. These cards were inserted one to a pack of Topps’ 1966 football cards, and they are checklisted on card #15 in the football set. In the set, you’ll find such rings as “Kiss Me,” “Big Mouth,” “Mrs. Skull” and various monsters. The rings remain unpunched as issued. Ex-m to nm.

Lot 248.  The World Index Parts I-V, Other References from Great Britain’s Cartophilic Society. These five hardback volumes are the definitive resource of identifying tobacco cards issued in the U.S., Great Britain and around the world. The Cartophilic Society of Great Britain produced the books from 1956 through 1990. They are accompanied by a number of other references. Issued in hardback, the five key books are: The World Tobacco Issues Index, 1975 reprint of the 1956 original, clear tape on the spine, vg+. The World Index (Part II), First Supplement, 1979 reprint of the 1965 original, vg-ex. The World Index (Part III), Second Supplement, 1979, clear tape on the spine, vg. The World Index (Part IV), Third Supplement, 1981, clear tape on the spine, vg. The World Index (Part V), Fourth Supplement, 1990, ex. These references are complete with pages that generally are ex. They contain more than 2,400 pages of information. Other hardbacks from the Cartophilic Society are The Tobacco War and B.A.T. Booklets, a 1978 reprint of Cartophilic Reference Books 18 from 1951 and 21 from 1952, vg+; Ogden and Guinea Gold Booklets, a 1978 reprint of Cartophilic Reference Books 15 from 1949 and 24 from 1959, vg-ex; and Wills Issues, a 1973 reprint based on World Index Parts I-V, vg-ex. Also, a softcover version of Cigarette Cards and Novelties by Frank Doggett, 1981, ex, and softcover reprints (8) of 1942-50 Cartophilic Reference Books cataloging issues by Faulkner, Hill, Gallaher, Ardath, Lambert & Butler, Churchman, Phillips, and Player.
