Hockey Cards, Autographs and Memorabilia   6 Lots

Lot 237.  Sidney Crosby Autographed Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey. The young star of the Pittsburgh and Canadian Olympic hockey teams placed an autograph that grades mint 9 on the “7” on the back of the jersey. Crosby led the 2009-10 NHL in goals scored and finished second in total points. Our consignor obtained the RBK Hockey (Reebok) jersey signed by Crosby directly from the Penguins. It is an unused game jersey and has the “Pittsburgh 250” patch on the right sleeve. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $484.

Lot 238.  Jacques Plante (HoF) Rare Signed Handwritten Letter. He revolutionized goaltending, but Plante is perhaps best remembered as the first goalie to wear a mask on a regular basis. In 1959, a puck off the stick of Andy Bathgate struck the Montreal Canadiens’ goalie in the nose, leaving him in a pool of blood. After being stitched up, Plante returned to the game wearing a mask, which he had sometimes worn in practice. Reluctantly, Canadiens coach Toe Blake allowed Plante to continue using the mask. Plante was only 57 when he passed away in 1986. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1978, eight years after he wrote this letter to two friends at the Molson Brewery. Plante worked for Molson’s after his first retirement in 1965. He returned to the game in 1968 and wrote the letter, in his native French, while playing for Toronto. In part, he wrote, “I don’t regret my return to the game, even though in Toronto we lose more often than we would like.” He added that “I would not like to be in Montreal (with the Canadiens.)” Dated Dec. 9, 1970, the letter is ex with the usual mailing folds. It comes with a Letter of Authenticity from the recipient of the letter, who, in a separate letter, reminisces about goalie. Plante’s signature is nm-m 8 to mint 9. Letters signed by Plante are seldom seen. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph for Collectible Classics.
Winning Bid $270.

Lot 239.  Wayne Gretzky Autographed 8” x 10” Color Photo. Featuring a gem mint 10 signature of the Hockey Hall of Fame Great, the photo is mounted as part of a 10 ½” x 13” plaque. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 240.  Wayne Gretzky Autograph – on a Mario Lemieux Photo (!) and Other Autographs. Actually, the signature is on the cover of the program for Lemieux’s 1999 charity golf event, and that’s where our consignor caught up with the Great One! The autograph is a bold 10. Inside, next to their photos, are autographs of Johnny Bench, John Elway, Mario Lemieux, Jim McMahon, Joe Morgan, Dan Quinn and Lynn Swann. Among these autographs, the Bench is especially strong and attractive. In addition, the program is signed also by Kevin McClatchy, former CEO and lead owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The autographs are bold 9s and 10s. The program comes matted and framed to about 11” x 14”. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $138.

Lot 241.  “Miracle on Ice” Photo Huge Display Signed Twice by U.S. Goalie Jim Craig. At the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, Craig was the goaltender when the U.S. achieved one of the greatest upsets in Olympics history. Craig stopped 36 of 39 shots on goal in the U.S. 4-3 semi-final victory over the Soviet Union. In the Gold Medal game two days later, with Craig again playing well, the U.S. beat Finland, 4-2. The composite display consists of a 16” x 20” color photo and two 8” x 10” photos triple-matted in red, white and blue and professionally framed to 28” x 35 ½”. The wormy chestnut frame is superb. Craig signed the larger photo, which shows the U.S. team celebrating its success, and added “Do You Believe in Miracles.” His autograph is also on one of the smaller photos. Both autographs are large, strong 10s authenticated by Kevin Keating. An awesome memento of an improbable event!
Winning Bid $92.
