Football Cards, Autographs and Memorabilia   14 Lots

Lot 211.  1950 Topps Felt Backs Football Display Box Top. The cards of this football issue are among the scarcest and most desirable in the hobby. If a complete display box exists, we haven’t seen it. Generally, it’s not even pictured in references. Offered here is the top panel of a box. It is colorful with graphics that include an in-action punter in period uniform, a football with “VARSITY” across it, a gridiron and two pennants, one with “COLLEGE” across it and “PENNANTS” across the other. Additional text reads, “bubble gum, 100 Gridiron Stars – 100!, 100 College Pennants – 100!” This blank-backed panel is affixed to a black background and comes nicely framed for display. Incredibly Rare!
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 212.  1965 Topps #133 Fred Biletnikoff (HoF) Rookie. Ex-m.
Winning Bid $125.

Lot 213.  Nm-M Gayle Sayers (HoF) Rookie – 1966 Philadelphia Gum #38. Bold colors, strong corners and centering 60:40 or better.
Winning Bid $163.

Lot 214.  1950s Victor Vending Football Gum Machine and Game. For 1 cent, this vintage vendor dispensed a gumball and allowed the purchaser to play a game by catapulting the ball in order to achieve a Touchdown, Field Goal or Off Side penalty. Measuring 8 ½” wide x 14” tall x 8 3/8” deep, this vending machine is original and in good working order. Two keys provide access to the interior. The vendor has some spots of wear, and there is some light rust on the lid. It displays nicely and is like to serve as an excellent source of conversation and entertainment.
Winning Bid $138.

Lot 215.  Early 1920s Green Bay Packers Photo with Curly Lambeau (HoF). The Hall of Fame Packers’ founder and coach is second from the left in a 3” x 4 ½” sepia photo. Five other players are pictured. Vintage steel tip fountain pen on the back identifies the photo as “Green Bay Professionals.” Lambeau formed the Packers while working for the Indian Packing Company in 1919. The team joined the National Football League in 1921. Ex photo with somewhat light contrast and sharp focus. Early photos of Lambeau are rare.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 216.  Rare Photo Premium of the 1937 Rose Bowl Champion Pitt Panthers. Following a third-place finish in the 1936 AP poll with a 7-1-1 record, the Panthers faced fifth-ranked Washington in the Rose Bowl. The Huskies also posted a 7-1-1 regular-season record. Led by legendary coach Jock Sutherland, Pitt scored in the first and third periods and then put the game away in the fourth when Bill Daddio intercepted a pass and returned to 71 yards for a touchdown. Daddio is pictured in the 9” x 12” photo, which is matted and framed to 14 ½” x 18 ½”. So are Sutherland and sophomore Marshall Goldberg, who played well in the Rose Bowl and helped to lead the 1937 Pitt team to an unbeaten, once-tied record and the top spot in the AP poll. Goldberg and Sutherland are in the College Hall of Fame. John Michelosen, who later coached Pitt and the Pittsburgh Steelers, is also in the photo. Issued by a Pitt publication, the premium is a thing of beauty because of its rarity. Technically, the photo has a vertical center fold, multiple creases, a small piece of tape over a tear, surface crazing and black added around the edges for reasons that aren’t clear. The premium identifies the players, and the names of those that actually played in the Rose Bow are underlined. This was the only Pitt team to win the Rose Bowl in four attempts. A “must” for Panther fans!
Winning Bid $110.

Lot 217.  Washington Redskins Collection Including a Football Signed by Art Monk (HoF). These items are from the estate of Wilmer Fields, ace pitcher for the Negro League Homestead Grays in the 1940s. Two items were awarded to his son Billy for his participation in the 1970 Punt, Pass and Kick competition: a 1970 Redskins HNFL medium helmet from Rawlings and a 1970 Redskins team football with facsimile autographs. The helmet shows good use with the side decals intact. The football, with facsimile autographs including Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff, is mint and comes with a kicking tee. Autographs are a key part of the collection. Art Monk, the Redskins Hall of Fame receiver, shares a white panel of a mint Tagliabue NFL Official Football with Charles Mann, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who was voted one of the 70 greatest Redskins of all-time. Their signatures are bold, both 10s except for a slight smudge at the beginning of the “h” in “Charles.” A signature on another panel is too light to be read. Mann’s autograph, personalized to “Audrey,” is also on a side panel of a Selig Official Major League baseball. Nm to nm-m signature, mint ball. There are four other autographs, all on 8’ x 10” b&w photos, Curt Knight, Mike Bragg, Brigg Owen and John Hoffman. All are nm-m 8 or better; the first three are personalized to “Wilmer.” Other items are: 1. A 1984 45 rpm record “Hog Wild and Skin Crazy” by the Five Card Draw Band, nm-m in a vg picture sleeve. 2. A 1975 Redskins schedule. 3. Ticket stubs for Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers games, date torn away. 4. A program for a 1970 Cowboys at Redskins game, ex. Kevin Keating authenticated the autographs in this collection.
Winning Bid $102.
