Lot 180.  Incredibly Rare First and Limited Edition Copy of Ellard’s Baseball in Cincinnati. In 1907, Cincinnati journalist Harry Ellard self-published Baseball in Cincinnati: A History, a 249-page book that provides a brief baseball history and then focuses on the origins and development of the Cincinnati Reds. Because former Red Stockings players provided information to Ellard, the book is an invaluable resource. Our consignor’s copy of this historic book is a very limited “Subscription Edition.” This first edition is hand-numbered 216 of only 500. Ellard re-issued an open edition of the book in 1908; recently, a copy was offered on the Internet for more than $3,000. The 1907 limited edition is far scarcer and desirable. This copy has gray boards with red artistic impressions. It is complete, including all of the numerous bookplates presenting rare photos of Cincinnati teams and players. Vg+ covers with ex-m pages. Take advantage of the rare opportunity to own one of the classics of baseball history and literature.

Lot 184.  Collection of 4 Bound Volumes of the New York Times Mid-Week Pictorial – 1930 and 1931. Published by The New York Times, the Pictorial captured the world in pictures, much as television does today. These volumes are for Jan.-April and May-Aug. 1930 and May-Aug. and Sept.-Dec. 1931. Generally, each issue contains 32 pages, primarily pictures with limited text. These volumes are loaded with photos of widely recognized figures from politics, aviation, sports, world events and other fields. Coverage of Charles Lindbergh and aviation is extensive. Col. Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow, fill the covers of three issues, and their baby, Augustus, who was later kidnapped and killed, is on another. Dirigibles, including the Graf Zeppelin and the U.S.S. Akron, occupy full inside pages, and other full-page cover subjects are various airplanes, aviatrix Elinor Smith, and Wiley Post and Harold Gatty. Babe Ruth is a frequent Pictorial subject, including three covers, one by himself, one with Alfred E. Smith and one with Al Simmons. Other cover subjects include Jack Sharkey, President Hoover, Max Schmeling, Helen Wills Moody, Francis Ouimet, Lefty Grove, Gandhi, Clara Bow, Helen Hicks (golf, 2 covers) and Notre Dame’s Marchmont Schwartz. Subjects of full-page photos are Bobby Jones (2, plus other images), the World Champion Philadelphia A’s, the Cubs, the Cardinals, the Senators, the Giants and the 1931 Cards vs. A’s World Series. There are double-page spreads on Byrd’s exploration of Antarctica and 1931 football All-Americans, including Gene McEver, Schwartz, Bill Hewitt and Biggie Munn. Other photos show Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, Jimmy Foxx bowling, President Coolidge, Gallant Fox, William S. Hart, Ruth and Gehrig, Jim Thorpe, Stribling vs. Schmeling, Sharkey vs. Carnera, Ken Maynard, Greta Garbo, Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the war in Asia, Columbia’s Christmas Eve TV broadcast and John D. Rockefeller at age 93. The hardcovers show some soiling and otherwise are ex to ex-m. The pages were trimmed to 11 1/4” x 15”; this change affects a very small number of photos and text. The pages generally have an ex+ to ex-m appearance. Pages for Jan. and a couple of weeks in March 1930 have a ½” tear at the bottom, and other volumes have occasional edge tears. Larger tears are infrequent. These volumes provide significant insight to the era and enjoyable viewing as well.
Winning Bid $168.

Lot 185.  New York Times Mid-Week Pictorial Bound Volumes for May-Dec. 1934 and Jan.-Aug. 1935. Shields, Helen Wills Moody and Helen Jacobs (separate covers), Moody and Jacobs together, Claire Trevor, Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable, Helen Jepson, Babe Ruth and Dizzy Dean, James J. Braddock and his family, and Will Rogers and Wiley Post (plus a double-page spread). Full pages inside are devoted to such subjects as Amelia Earhart (three issues), Baer vs. Braddock (double-page), Baer vs. Carnera (four pages), Niagara Falls, Haile Selassie and war preparations in Ethiopia, Wimbledon (single and double-page), the 1934 (double-page) and 1935 All-Star Games, “Babe Ruth’s Transfer to Boston,” the Nazis in Germany (three, all with Hitler), the Walker Cup (Ouimet and Dunlap), the Chicago World’s Fair, America’s Cup, Hitler and Mussolini, the movie Treasure Island, the A.L. Champion Detroit Tigers (includes Greenberg and Cochrane), the college football season (several two-page spreads), the 1934 World Series (double-page), the assassination and funeral of King Alexander of Yugoslavia, Minnesota as the national football champion (double-page), 1934 football All-Americans, and President Roosevelt with VP Garner. Other interesting photo subjects include Stalin, Jesse Owens, the war in Europe, Bobby Jones, Joan Crawford, Dizzy Dean, Melvin Purvis and an executioner’s football helmet. The covers show soiling and otherwise are generally ex to ex+. The pages are trimmed to about 9” x 13”. As a result, for some pages, photos and text are affected, principally in the 1935 issues. Otherwise, the pages tend to be ex-m or better with occasional edge tears or chips. These issue provide an important pictorial history.
