Autographed Baseball Books   6 Lots

Lot 118.  2 Jim Bouton Signed Books – Ball Four & the Update, Ball Four Plus Ball Five. Both Bouton autographs are gem mint 10s. The pitcher and author signed the first title page of his highly regarded earlier book, Ball Four, which was published in 1970. This 1993 edition is ex in a similar dust jacket that has a B. Dalton sticker on the front. In his second book, Bouton discusses the reaction to his original book, which is part of the update, as well as his life and career during and after baseball. Bouton signed the flyleaf of the update. The 1981 book, an apparent first edition, is nm in an ex dj. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research, a non-profit membership organization open to all that fosters the research, preservation, and dissemination of the history and record of baseball.
Minimum Bid $20.

Lot 119.  Joe Garagiola Signed Copy of Just Play Ball. Gem mint 10 autograph dated 2007 on the title page of the 2007 book, which is nm+ in an ex dust jacket. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $25.

Lot 120.  Dave Pallone Signed Copy of Behind the Mask: My Double Life in Baseball. A National League umpire from 1979-88, Pallone resigned amid revelations that he was gay. The 1990 book is nm+ in an ex-m dust jacket. Pallone’s autograph, personalized to “Harry,” is gem mint 10 on the first title page. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Minimum Bid $10.

Lot 121.  Shirley Povich Signed Copy of All These Mornings. Today, Povich may be best known as the father of television’s Morey Povich. He is more appropriately remembered, however, as the widely respected sports reporter and columnist for the Washington Post. In this autobiographical book, Povich provides stories spanning two world wars, with a depression between. The 1969 hardcover book, which grades vg to vg+, is an apparent first edition. The dust jacket is absent. Povich, whose signature is scarce, signed the flyleaf. The signature is a gem mint 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $125.

Lot 122.  Bill Veeck Signed Autobiography – Veeck as in Wreck. Written with Ed Linn, the book recounts the “chaotic career of baseball’s incorrigible maverick.” Veeck was one of baseball’s great innovators and promoters. His innovations and successes with the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1991, five years after his death. Veeck’s signature is mint 9 to gem mint 10 on the flyleaf, which shows light, somewhat uneven toning. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. The 1962 hardcover book, an apparent first edition, is g-vg; it shows minor effects from exposure to moisture, and on the back, the dust jacket is partially adhered to the cover. If excised, the signature would display very nicely. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 198.  The Brooklyn Dodgers 1953-1957: A Fan’s Memoir Signed by Dodgers Players. The autographs of Pee Wee Reese, Carl Furillo, Carl Erskine, Don Newcombe, Ralph Branca, Cal Abrams, Sal Maglie, Johnny Podres and Clem Labine are on the cover of this 1982 ex softcover book. Mrs. Gil Hodges and Dodgers press agent Irving Rudd also signed. The signatures are primarily 9s and 10s. The softcover book is by Bill Borst, whose personalized signature is on the title page. There are Jackie Robinson stamps and 1982 and 1984 Cooperstown postmarks on the book. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research, a non-profit membership organization open to all that fosters the research, preservation, and dissemination of the history and record of baseball.
Winning Bid $83.
