Baseball Type Cards   12 Lots

Lot 75.  Very Scarce 1953 First National Super Market Stores card of Sammy White. Vg+ to ex example of an uncommon type card.
Winning Bid $240.

Lot 92.  Rare, Uncataloged 1972 Post-Gazette Pittsburgh “Pirates ’72 Album” Near Set of 26. A similar 1973 set from the newspaper is cataloged. Stars of the 1972 issue are #5 Clemente, 8 Ellis, 16 Mazeroski, 19 Oliver, 23 Sanguillen, 25 Stargell, 26 Veale and 28 Virdon. Missing are #2, possibly Dale Berra, and 12, possibly Grant Jackson. These “cards,” as issued, vary in size from about 5 ¼” x 8 ¾” to 5 ¼” x 9 ¾”. Each has a player photo portrait, biographical information and 1972 and career statistics. The near set is ex-m to nm. Except for #23 Sanguillen, all of the cards have the thick black border all the way around. The border is missing from the bottom and right side of Sanguillen. There is a very small chip in the bottom border of the Bob Johnson card. Very nice example of a rare Pirates newspaper issue!
Winning Bid $429.

Lot 93.  Rare Uncataloged 1977 Post-Gazette Pittsburgh “Pirates Portraits” Set of 31. Using the same sketches by several artists, the Pittsburgh newspaper issued in book form a set of 30 cards, each 8 ½” x 11”. This set consists of 31 “cards,” each about 4 ½” x 9 ½” and clipped from the newspaper. Below each portrait are career and statistical information. The checklist is the same as for the book issue, except that Jerry Hairston has been added, increasing the newpaper set to 31. Hairston was sold to the Pirates in June, and the set appeared in the newspaper in June. There also are some number variations between the book and newspaper issues. Key players in the set are Stargell, Gossage, Oliver and Parker. This set has been neatly clipped from the newspapers. All have a black border all the way around, and in most cases, the full thickness of the border is present. Nm. The probability of finding a nicer set is not high.
Winning Bid $185.
