Baseball Type Cards   12 Lots

Lot 15.  Rare, Uncataloged 19th Century Stiner & Co. Coffee “First Baseman” Card. “First Basewoman” might be more accurate and politically correct for the 21st century. The 2 7/16” x 3 7/16” sepia card has a photo of a bare-handed woman player on the front and, on the back, a list of New York City stores selling Stiner “Pure Teas and Coffees.” The copy on the back also promotes baseball: “All lovers of out-door sports find Baseball foremost in supplying them with amusement.” The card has a small chip out of the top border, a ¼” edge tear, one heavy crease and several lighter, and stains that do not affect the player’s image. P-f.
Winning Bid $240.

A heavy vertical crease in the middle of the card, not uncommon with this issue, f+ to g. 9. 1923 W515-1 #50 Maranville, tightly trimmed, sharp image, damage to the blank back, g-vg front as trimmed. 10. 1928 W513 #76 Grantham, well centered, moderate border chipping, clean front and back, f-g. A nice group for Pirates or vintage type collectors.
Winning Bid $163.

Lot 59.  2 Scarce 1910 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements – Chief Bender, HoF Umpires. Each supplement is 1/8” short of 8” x 10”, apparently as issued. The earlier, from a Van Oeyen photo and dated March 31, pictures N.L. umpires Bill Klem and Bill Johnstone and A.L. arbiters Billy Evans and “Silk” O’Loughlin. Klem became one of the first two umpires enshrined at Cooperstown in 1953. Evans joined this elite fraternity in 1973. The premium displays as vg+ to ex. It has a number of very light creases, noticeable principally in the corners. There also is a 5/8” tear along the top edge, which has been reinforced with tape on the back. The Bender premium, dated Dec. 8, is adhered to a photo album “stick ‘em” page. It shows one vertical and one horizontal fold, one additional heavy crease and several lighter creases, and the album’s vertical glue lines show through very lightly. There is a chip to the premium in the lower left. The premium displays very decently with a strong Van Dyck image of Bender. These premiums, which turn up infrequently, will make a nice addition to a Sporting News, premium or type collection.
Winning Bid $110.

Lot 61.  1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinet Card Photo of #421 Harry L. Gasper. This issue consists of actual photo adhered to a variety of backs, including true cabinet mounts. Like many others in this perplexing set, this photo is attached, partially, to construction paper. The sepia photos measure 3 7/8” x 5 15/16”, including the white border. Cards attached to thick photo cabinet mounts typically were borderless, and the photo itself measure 3 9/16” x 5 9/16”. It exhibits excellent contrast, has a small chip in the upper right corner, several tiny, light stains, a couple of very minor creases and some very light impressions toward the bottom where it is glued to the paper backing. Most of the card is loose from the backing. Very collectible example with a generally vg appearance.
Winning Bid $100.

Lot 65.  26 Different Strip Cards Including HoFers and an E285 Rittenhouse Card. This collection provides “type” cards and a couple of starter sets. 1933 E285 Rittenhouse: Berger, ex. 1925 W504 Universal Toy: Stock, g-vg. 1919-21 W514: #10 Schulte, f-g. 1920 W516-1-2: Rudolph (miscut) p. 1920 W519 Numbered 1: #10 Griffith, f. 1920 W519 Numbered 2: #12 Veach, g. 1920 W519 Unnumbered: Cravath p, Kreuger p-f, Morton vg and Murphy g. 1920 W520: #20 Nunamaker, f-g. 1921 W521: #1 Morton p-f, 3 Cravath g, 4 Kreuger p-f, 10 Griffith p, 11 Baker g, 12 Veach f-g, 19 Eddie Collins p-f, 18 Frisch p-f, 20 Schang(e) f-g. 1923 W572: Eddie Collins g-vg. 1921 W9316: #4 Griffith f-g, 6 Schang(e) g, 8 Sisler p, 9 Schalk g and 10 Barnes p-f.
Winning Bid $163.

Lot 67.  6 1926-29 Postcard-Back Exhibit Cards – All HoFers, One Apparently Uncataloged. The card of Paul Waner is a sepia portrait with a plain background. It appears to be checklisted only with the photo background. Like the five other cards, the Waner has writing on the back, typically “XXX” in pen; some have a small amount of additional writing. The front of the Waner card is g. The front of the Simmons card, also sepia, is g-vg. Cards of Cochrane, Klein, Traynor and Hack Wilson, all printed in dark violet, have impressions from two or six letters in pencil on the front and grade f-g. With the backs taken into consideration, all six cards grade p-f or f. All six are uncommon, and they display far better than the grades indicate.
Winning Bid $134.

Lot 68.  1930 Blue Ribbon Malt Chicago White Sox Uncut Sheet of 27 Cards. One of the better early White Sox display items, including Red Faber, Willie Kamm, Ted Lyons, Blondy Ryan and Ed Walsh. This example of the 12” x 40” advertising piece is matted to 14 ½” x 41”. It has tape, which slightly affects two cards, in four places along the edges, and all of the cards show very light stress creases from having been rolled or somewhat heavier but non-offensive creases. The sheet displays decently and will make a fine addition to a White Sox or type collection.
Winning Bid $121.

Lot 75.  Very Scarce 1953 First National Super Market Stores card of Sammy White. Vg+ to ex example of an uncommon type card.
Winning Bid $240.

Lot 92.  Rare, Uncataloged 1972 Post-Gazette Pittsburgh “Pirates ’72 Album” Near Set of 26. A similar 1973 set from the newspaper is cataloged. Stars of the 1972 issue are #5 Clemente, 8 Ellis, 16 Mazeroski, 19 Oliver, 23 Sanguillen, 25 Stargell, 26 Veale and 28 Virdon. Missing are #2, possibly Dale Berra, and 12, possibly Grant Jackson. These “cards,” as issued, vary in size from about 5 ¼” x 8 ¾” to 5 ¼” x 9 ¾”. Each has a player photo portrait, biographical information and 1972 and career statistics. The near set is ex-m to nm. Except for #23 Sanguillen, all of the cards have the thick black border all the way around. The border is missing from the bottom and right side of Sanguillen. There is a very small chip in the bottom border of the Bob Johnson card. Very nice example of a rare Pirates newspaper issue!
Winning Bid $429.

Lot 93.  Rare Uncataloged 1977 Post-Gazette Pittsburgh “Pirates Portraits” Set of 31. Using the same sketches by several artists, the Pittsburgh newspaper issued in book form a set of 30 cards, each 8 ½” x 11”. This set consists of 31 “cards,” each about 4 ½” x 9 ½” and clipped from the newspaper. Below each portrait are career and statistical information. The checklist is the same as for the book issue, except that Jerry Hairston has been added, increasing the newpaper set to 31. Hairston was sold to the Pirates in June, and the set appeared in the newspaper in June. There also are some number variations between the book and newspaper issues. Key players in the set are Stargell, Gossage, Oliver and Parker. This set has been neatly clipped from the newspapers. All have a black border all the way around, and in most cases, the full thickness of the border is present. Nm. The probability of finding a nicer set is not high.
Winning Bid $185.
