Baseball Annuals, SI and Other Periodicals   6 Lots

Lot 212.  First Issue of Sports Illustrated – Aug. 16, 1954 with Eddie Mathews on the Cover. Flat, tight ex-m to nm copy with tiny creases in the outer corners of the cover of the long-running sports weekly. There also are a couple of typical, small stress creases next to the spine. Inside, the three-panel fold-out of 27 Topps 1954 cards is crease-free and nm. The Jablonski and Rivera cards each have a tiny spot where the ink didn’t cover. One of the articles pictures Mickey Mantle and covers baseball cards. This is a high-quality example of SI’s first regular offering.
Winning Bid $134.

The annual chose Bob Feller for the cover of its first issue in 1941, and this copy has a vg-ex appearance with two small pieces of tape on the spine and a gem mint 10 Feller autograph. The other 1940s issues average vg to vg-ex, a couple with news stand notations. The 1950s, which include many Mickey Mantle covers, average vg+ to ex, again with some news stand markings. Issues for the 1960s improve to an average of ex to ex-m, and from 1970 on, the editions average nm. In 1970, Street and Smith went to regional covers.
