Lot 162.  George Brett Signed Bat Commemorating the “Pine Tar” Incident. Mint 9 to gem mint 10 autograph on a 34” Louisville Slugger stained to replicate the appearance of the pine tar that Brett used in a game on July 24, 1983. Playing for the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium, Brett hit a home run that gave the Royals a 5-4 lead. Subsequently, however, home plate umpire Tim McClelland called Brett out, and nullified the homer, after Yankees manager Billy Martin claimed that pine tar extended too far up the handle of Brett’s bat. The Royals protested McClelland’s ruling, and Lee MacPhail, the A.L. president, ruled in their favor. The game was later resumed from the point of Brett’s home run, and the Royals won, 5-4. The bat is nm. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

In the 1950s, Roberts won 199 games, including a career-high 28 in 1952. During the decade, only Warren Spahn posted more wins. His career 286 wins earned him a place in the Hall of Fame in 1986. One of the key items in this collection is an ONL Coleman ball that Roberts signed on the sweet spot and added “HOF 76” below. On the north and south panels, he then added career highlights and statistics, including “1952-Sporting News M.V.P.” and “Whiz Kids 1950 N.L. Champs.” The signature and additions are 10s. Roberts also signed the bill of a Phillies size 7 3/8 New Era wool cap with an Authentic Diamond Collection label. Bold 10 autograph with “HOF 76” added. Four Roberts signatures are one photos, two 11” x 14” and two 8” x 10”. He and Warren Spahn both signed one of the larger photos, which pictures them as the top game winners of the 1950s. In one of the smaller photos, Roberts is pictured after winning his 200th game, and he added “200th Win” above his signature. One of the more unusual signed items is the Dell 1953 Major League Baseball Facts and Figures guide with Roberts on the cover. Outstanding signature. There are five signatures on four checks from the 1970s. Cancellation stamps slightly affect two signatures. Twelve Roberts signatures plus Warren Spahn. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
