Type Cards and Oddities   4 Lots

Lot 5.  Extremely RARE!! 1934-36 Batter-Up Premium of Wes. Ferrell. Only three or four of these cards are known. There are uncataloged and without an American Card Catalog (ACC) designation. Regular Batter-Up cards, of course, were designated “R318.” On the wrapper for the R318 issue, these cards, referred to as a “Large Photo Art Picture,” are offered for one cent. Produced using very thin paper, these blank-backed cards are 5” x 8” and printed in a reddish-brown color. This example featuring the six-time 20-game winner who starred for Cleveland and Boston has multiple light creases and several very small scuffs. It displays well and is very desirable because of its rarity.
Winning Bid $1,821.

Lot 6.  Background Color Variation 1909-11 T206 Cards of Josh Clark Graded by SGC. One card of Clark has an orange background, while the other has a red background. In addition, on the card with the red background, there is additional red on Clark’s lips, cheek and left hand. SGC graded the orange-background card 40 VG 3. It has ex corners, a tiny corner crease and is centered toward the bottom so that a very small portion of Clark’s name and team is cut off. The front and back of the card are very clean. The red-background card is graded A for authentic, apparently because it falls outside SGC’s size requirements. The card clearly is oversized top to bottom, and apparently slightly undersized left to right. The corners are ex, the centering approaches perfections on the front, the colors are bold, and creases seem to be missing. Interesting pair of great-looking cards.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 7.  Extremely Rare 1940 Play Ball Colorized Proof Card of # 48 “Luke” Sewell. In 1941, of course, Play Ball introduced fully colorized cards. The colorized 1940 cards apparently were a step in creating the process for the 1941 cards. The 2009 SCD Standard Catalog checklists five of these cards. This card of Sewell is an addition to the list. The colorization is apparent primarily on Sewell’s face. The card has vg corners and is free of creases. There are two pencil marks on the left side of Sewell’s face, and there are scuffs on his lips, obscuring much of the pink color used for his lips. Accompanying this card, which may be one-of-a-kind, is a vg+ to ex regular-issue Sewell card.
Winning Bid $321.

Lot 8.  5 1949 Bowman Error Cards – All with Double-Printed Backs. The fronts of the cards are of #6 Cavarretta, 10 Gray, 21 Baumholtz, 25 Scheib and 33 Spahn. The backs are printed with information on both the player on the front and another player. The back of the Spahn card is double-printed with information on #105 Kennedy; Cavarretta, #78(a) Zoldak; Gray, #82 Page; Baumholtz, #93 Stevens, and Scheib, #97 Litwhiler. The backs are all slightly miscut. The fronts are well centered and grade: #6 f-g, 10 g, 21nm+, 25 nm and 33 p-f.
Winning Bid $68.
