Olympics, and Track & Field   4 Lots

Lot 263.  Jim Thorpe 1912 Original Photo from Culver Pictures Graded Fine by CGC. The 7 ½” x 9” action photo captures Thorpe just after he has completed throwing a discus. Two months later, he would earn two gold medals at the Olympic Games in Stockholm. It shows some edge and corner creasing, an area below Thorpe where the emulsion is somewhat uneven and sharp focus and contrast. The Associated Press named Thorpe the top athlete of the first half of the 20th century and then dropped him to #3 for the full century behind Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan. ESPN ranked him seventh. Of course, none of the athletes the pundits placed ahead of him ever competed, let along won, gold medals in the rigorous pentathlon and decathlon in a single Olympics. Certainly Ruth was a far superior baseball player, but he never made the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame, or won an Olympic event. And even though baseball wasn’t Thorpe’s best game, he still collected 176 more major league hits and seven more home runs than Jordan. Whoever was best, this is an excellent vintage image of a truly great athlete.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 264.  Beautiful Vintage Jesse Owens Fountain Pen Signature. Outstanding gem mint 10 autograph on 2” x 4 ¾” section of quality paper excellent for matting and framing. The paper has several vertical folds and some creases. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 265.  Steve Prefontaine Photo on the Cover of Sports Illustrated, June 15, 1970. Outstanding cover photo of the distance runner who once held every U.S. record for 2,000 to 10,000 meters. The cover is vg+ to ex with a couple of creases at the edges and a mailing label. There is writing on the back cover. The inside of the magazine, which is ex-m to nm, has a four-page article on Prefontaine. The issue will make a nice companion to Lot #1, a Prefontaine signed letter!
Winning Bid $30.
