Lot 269.  2 Circa 1910 Partial Sets – T53 “Cowboy Series” and T73 “Indian Life in the 60’s.” Twenty-seven of 49 cards are present for the cowboys set, and 29 of 50 for the Indians set, for a total of 53 cards. All of the cards have Hassan backs. Approximately one quarter of the cards grade vg. The remaining three quarters are g-vg or less.

Lot 270.  1911 T25 Between the Acts “Actors” Near Set of 45 (of 50). This collection includes such luminaries as Maurice Barrymore vg-ex, David Belasco f, Edwin Booth vg-ex, George M. Cohan vg+ to ex, Lew Fields (of Weber and Fields) g-vg, DeWolf Hopper (Casey at the Bat performer) vg+ to ex, Sir Henry Irving vg+ to ex, Chauncey Olcott (wrote the lyrics for When Irish Eyes Are Smiling) vg+ to ex and Otis Skinner vg-ex. Missing from this collection are Harlan, Lackaye, Robson, Russell and Sothern. This near set grades vg-ex to vg+-ex overall with a few cards in lesser condition.

Lot 271.  31 Different 1910s B6 National Flags. These flags, about 5 ½” x 8 ¼”, are a mix of Types 1, 2 and 3. Type 1 (plain field): Burmah, Columbia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Persia, Turkey-Eqypt and Venezuela. Type 2 (floral field): Belgium, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Liberia, Peru, Roumania, Servia (2 different), So. African Republic, South Australia, Spain and Turkey. Type 3 (country on shield): Congo, Crete, Peru, Samoa and Turkey. Sixteen of the flags are ex or better, and 15 are vg-ex or less.

The tobacco-sized cards have color fronts and descriptive backs unless otherwise noted: 1. 1916 Player “Napoleon” set of 25. The set traces his rise and fall. Lot 273.  325+ Cards Including 4 Sets, Primarily 1920s-30s, Featuring British Royalty. These cards, all different, provide a lesson in the history of British monarchs and other royal figures. The sets, all in color with descriptive back, are: 1925 Carreras (Turf) “Regalia Series” of 25. These tobacco-sized cards picture and describe accouterments of the monarchy. Ex-m to nm overall. There also is a larger format (about 2 ½” x 3 1/8”) near set (19 of 20) of these cards. G. 1927 Churchman “The King’s Coronation” set of 15. The cards are about 2 ½” x 3 1/8”. Lot 276.  2 Quality Real-Photo 1930s Sets Featuring Actresses and Models Plus a Third Set. The key set in this collection is the 1935 R. J. Lea (Chairman Juniors) tobacco issue titled “Girls from the Shows.” The set comprises 48 tobacco-sized cards, including such stars as Ida Lupino, Kitty Carlisle, Joan Crawford, June Clyde, Alice Faye, Joan Gardner, Carole Lombard (with George Raft), Ginger Rogers (with Fred Astaire), Dorothy Dickson and Claire Trevor. The card fronts have real b&w glossy photos, more than half with the actress wearing a bikini or assuming a leggy pose. The backs provide brief biographical information. Approximately half of this set is ex-m or better, one-quarter is ex to ex-m and one-quarter is vg to vg-ex. Ardath is the source of the second set, “Real Photographs, Series Twelve.” The set is composed of 54 cards that are about 2 ¾” x 3” and features Veronica Rose, Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell, Marie Wilson, Olivia De Havilland, Betty Grable, Ellen Drew and various other British and American actresses of the era. Overwhelmingly, bathing suits are the preferred attire. Ex-m to nm overall. The third set, “Famous Film Stars” from R. & J. Hill in 1938, includes head and shoulders portraits of 38 actresses and two actors. June Clyde, Ann Dvorak, Deanna Durbin and Betty Grable are among the U.S. and British stars. The backs of the second and third sets are descriptive. Overall ex-m+. There are 16 additional real-photo cards from various sets, including several “Modern Beauties” series, 1939 Carreras “Glamour Girls and Stage and Films” and “Film and Stage Beauties” and Ardath “Photocards” and “Real Photographs.” Doreen Stapleton, Marie Wilson, Lola Lane, Edie Adams and Margaret Sullivan are among those pictured. They grade nm to nm+ 2 cards, ex to ex-m 7, vg to vg-ex 5, g 1, p-f 1. The “Girls from the Shows” set alone books for about $100.

Lot 277.  360 W. C. MacDonald (British Consols) 1940s “Aeroplanes & Warships” Cards. This collection is made up of 192 airplanes and 165 ships, including the H.M.S. Skate, the H.M. Sub Perseus, the H.M.S. London, the H.M.S. Exeter and the H.M.S Hermes aircraft carrier. It appears that 53 cards constitute a set. Issued in Canada, the cards have promotional dates on the back; 30 Sept. 1943 is overwhelmingly the most prominent date, but cards also are dated March and June 1941 and March 1944. Backs of the cards are numbered from 1-53. There is at least one card for each number except #50. There are many variations. For example, some #1 cards picture the H.M.S. Eagle, while others show the Birmingham. All of the ship cards are without advertising on the front. Not so with the airplane cards, which have either Skyways tobacco or Daily Mail promotions. Printed on white stock, the backs picture playing cards and contain British Consols advertising. One card dated 31 March 1941 has a blue back. Card #53, which has a “Joker” back, is different from the others; it has a scoreboard (“Score Memo”) front. Impressive collection, interesting and unusual. These cards carry the American Card Catalog designation C166 (airplanes) and C167 (ships). Approximately 20% are nm or better, 40% are ex-m to ex-m+, 25% ex to ex+, 10% vg to vg-ex, 5% g-vg or less.

This set features colorful artwork and subsets on Old West figures Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill, Wyatt Earp, Daniel Boone, James, Geronimo and Kit Carson.
